Glenfiddich 18 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky 700ml (Scratch & Dent Clearance) $94.99 + Shipping (Free >$200) @ Nicks

670

Glenfiddich 18 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky is available at Nicks for the fantastic price of $94.99 due to "scratch n dent" clearance. Lowest price I've seen on this.

As such products may have some damage to packaging. According to Nicks's "These may have split bottle seals exposing the cap or label damage. These are for drinkers, not collectors."

If you care about the packaging you can get it in pristine condition for $99.99 at Gooddrop plus delivery ($9 for NSW, ACT, VIC, $15 for QLD, SA, $20 for TAS, WA, NT). Frankly I usually through away the outer box and you could always decant it into a nicer bottle :)

$165 at First Choice, Not available at Dan's, Liquorland, or BWS.

Description from Nick's website below:

"While the twelve year old is a relatively non-descript malt, older Glenfiddich bottlings are now gaining high praise including one award as the world's best single malt Scotch whisky. However, as a representation of the house style, the 18 year old pretty much nails it. Always a centre-piece of the portfolio, the company has further emphasised its place by redesigning the packaging to give it a more superior look than its 12- and 15-year-old stablemates.

The Glenfiddich distillery lies on the river whose name it bears. 'Fiddich' refers to the fact that the river runs through a valley inhabited by deers – hence the company's logo which features a stag. A proportion of the whisky in this version of Glenfiddich is supposedly even older than the label suggests.

Tasting note: Deep gold colour. Moderate aromas include honey, clove and vanilla laced malt. On the palate, dried apricots and spice are augmented by soft peat, adding depth to the toasty malt. Plush mouth feel. Clean, dried fruit and spice finish. Rich and round, in the mainstream of Sherry influenced malts. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews… the smoke which for long marked this aroma, appears to have vanished…one of the most complex deliveries Speyside can conjure….long, despite the miserly 40% offered, with plenty of banana custard and a touch of pear; at the moment, the ace in the Glenfiddich pack. If this was bottled at 46%, unchillfiltered etc, I dread to think what the score might be. 95 points- Jim Murrays Whisky Bible 2016

Luxe and easy-sipping. Look for enticing notes of butterscotch, baked pear, cinnamon and clove on the nose and palate, swathed in just the right amount of smokiness.

Sorry, I should have said, I love pouring this into my face hole. I really really like it and I find it delicious. Others may not like it, but I do.
        Is that better?

        • +49

you could've just said it's an excellent whisky

  • would it be sacrilegious to mix this with coke?

    • +11

This is a safe place, you do with it whatever you like. You will be judged though….

    • +4

Mostly it'd just be a waste of money.

    • +3

      Buy cheap whisky for that

      • +13

        Buy expensive coke instead

  • -1

I have about 3cm left of Hibiki 17… what do I do with it?

    • +7

      add coke?

    • +2

      How wide is it?

    • +6

      make it 2cm!

    • +5

Use what's left to drown sorrows in regret, now that it's worth $800/bottle. Also, WTF does it have to do with this post?

      • Yes… I have been regretting it…

  • +3

    This was a screaming bargain!

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/407669

  • +3

It's $99.99 in their eBay store, free shipping over $200. If you've got 10% or 15% off eBay gift cards, better price there.

    • *free shipping not for all of Australia

    • Good tip, cheers!

  • +1

    delicious.

  • I remember having this stuff years ago with a mate and we were both underwhelmed. it was fairly harsh.

    • +3

I do wonder with this stuff, is it really good or do people like to believe it's good just because they paid more for it 😂

      • When i drank this for the first time i had no knowledge of its price and found it to be brilliant. Then i found out the price and drink it very rarely. It's a magnificent drop

      • +4

Johnny Walker Blue is the classic example of that.
It's quite harsh. The last botrle I was given I re-gifted.

But the marketing department has done a great job.

        • +3

Yeah Johnnie Green is probably the sweet spot especially if you can get it for around $65 on special

    • Agreed. I wasn't overly impressed with this. Maybe my expectation was too high.

    • It's fairly smooth, besides.. harshness isn't an indicator of quality.

  • Is this a good whisky to mix with coke? Asking for a Chinese cousin

  • Bought this recently thinking it would be better than the 15 year Solera….I was wrong.

    • +1

Unsure who negged you. Plenty of ppl agree with this sentiment and the 15 is regularly the more expensive option. I have both and struggle to choose a favourite! It's a good problem.

  • +1

Can anyone tell me how this compares to the balvenie 12-year-old that was on special just recently? I bought one of those and now wish I bought about 5..

This scotch is just a bit more expensive but is it worth the cost of a hipster burger?

  • How does this stack up against Glenlivet 18? I had one of the 2 and fell in love with it. Just can't remember which one.

    • Would prefer this, taste much smother

    • have this and Glenlivet 15, very hard to say which i prefer tbh

  • +7

Not sure what is so fantastic about this price, considering it is ALWAYS $99.99 at Nick (still is: https://www.nicks.com.au/glenfiddich-18-year-old-single-malt…)

I would never buy a spirit that have it seal broken, who know if you are even getting the real thing?

  • +3

Seal definitely isn't broken. Slightly peeled but not enough for the average person to notice.
I impulse bought one while picking up the GlenDronach Revival 15. They let you taste the stuff in store. If getting only one I'd get the GlenDronach but it is still a nice drop. Nicks is the Best Whisky store!

  • +1

the 15yo is better and cheaper imho

  • $175 at first choice and Dan Murphy's had no stock near me

    • How is this kinda price disparity even possible? SMH!

      • Nicks directly import some stuff to bring better pricing. So our local importers must be taking a very healthy cut

  • It's only this item on sale. It's not a general scratch and dent sale. Shame, I got excited

  • +1

Do people buy from sydney duty free still or is it not worth it as it seems like it is so pricey compared to some of the deals on ozbargain? Or am i wrong? For me i still buy syd duty free just because people always tell me its a waste to not buy in duty free whenever you go overseas but i am thinking i might need to reconsider with some of the sales i have seen on ozbargain..

    • Not ususally worth it as they typically sell at full RRP. Once you get the duty and GST back it works out to be about 20% off from memory, so if a normal retail store has a special on they are often much cheaper. YMMV though so if in doubt check the price at the airport and do a quick scan of Dan's, Nick's, 1st Choice, Vintage Cellars, The Whisky List etc…

The range in duty free stores in Australia is usually pretty boring so unless you want a litre of JD or Glenlivet 12 there's few drops of interest to serious single malt whisky drinkers/collectors.

Major UK airports like Heathrow and Gatwick have a much larger range of rare and travel exclusive drops. I've almost missed a flight or two having a wander through their range!

    • +1

I find that it is worth it if you are buying the cheap stuff at duty free. Like Jack Daniel, Jim Beam, Jameson, Johnnie Walker or Canadian Club. I normally buy the 1.75l JD bottle for 50 bucks, that is like $28 for 1 litre of JD. The cheapest i seen JD outside of duty free is $35 for 700ml bottle so that is like $50/L

For more expensive single malt whisky it is not as good. Also a lot of Brand and Distillery have discontinue their age statement range in favor of a more expression range for duty free exclusive. So you really can't even compare price for them. Keep in mind though duty free bottle are normally 1L compare to 700ml bottle normally.

Most of the good deal require you to buy 2 for a cheaper price or buy 2 get 15%-20%

One example is Aberlour 12, which was on special at around $60 for a 700ml bottle at First Choice. That is roughly $85/L.

Normally 1L Aberlour 12 at duty free is $90 so it would be cheaper outside, but if you buy 2, it currently have a 15% off special making it $153 for 2L or $76.5/L

You just have to shop around and know your price to see if it is worth it to buy from duty free.

      • Definitely, but that's a lot of hassle to save $10, especially if on your outbound flight (you'll have to cart 2L of whisky around with you for the whole trip). Still worth it in some cases but unless you're a travelling businessman you won't get that option much :(
