I'm not downvoting, but I simply don't believe that expensive alcohol (past a certain point) tastes any better than the cheaper alternatives.

      past a certain point

What point would you say that is?

      • +4

        Diggers brand probably

Depends on what alcohol you're talking about.

I'm mainly a beer drinker and I liked the fake Aldi Coopers pale ale. Or an even more extreme example (though not a domestic one) is that I went to France two years ago and Lidl (a discount supermarket similar to Aldi) had excellent beers which were cheap by French standards and ridiculously cheap by Australian standards. Better than the vast majority of beers I've had.

With wines, there are lots of blind taste testings with sommeliers that show that price regularly doesn't factor in much as to how much supposed experts like any given wine.

I must say I'm definitley NOT a spirits expert, but I would be surprised if people could reliably tell which Whiskey was the "best" in a blind taste testing for bottles above say $70.

        • “Best” is subjective, as it is literally a matter of taste. But, there are certain characteristics that most people enjoy more in certain drinks. With quality whisky, most people seem to like complexity (different layers of smell/taste) and the development of flavours throughout, balance (one particular flavour isn’t overwhelming), not too much heat (overwhelming alcohol burn), oily, rich and smooth (rather than thin and watery), and a long finish (lingering, changing taste). Getting all these attributes together, typically costs good money, but you can definitely get some of them with some cheaper bottles, but there are very few examples of getting all. Sometimes the absence of one of these distinctions plays a significant part in the impression it leaves.
I would be very surprised if you couldn’t tell the difference between a high quality single malt and a cheap, mass-produced blend.
Also, Lidl and Aldi (in Europe, at least) use rebranded beers from (often) decent breweries. The trick is to look at the address on the label to work out which one it is.

$70 is basically entry level whisky these days here in the land of being ripped off by our government, so it wouldn't be hard to accurately determine higher quality whiskies than that in a blind tasting.

Roughly agree but for whisky that price point is $90-$100. Beyond that I believe it's personal tastes and I dont really want to develop a taste for $400 whisky.

The main problem for regular whisky buyers is actually when you find a nice reliable drop, then the distiller bumps it to another price range, e.g. Macallan 12 or Lagavulin 16.

And sometimes when a whisky is reputationally good (i.e. popular) the distiller bumps the price to what the market will bear.

        • 110-120 is about the sweet spot for whisky where you start to see diminishing returns. The difference between a $70 blended whisky and a $120 single malt is huge

    • kind of agreed with you, only the first taste would make bit difference but then after that….

    • +1

if you drink it neat then its hard to go back to jameson

    • +3

I agree, people pay 5x for 18y macallan or 10x for jap whisky are stupid.
Just like ppl that pays 5x price to buy 1st class airplane or M2 beef vs M9 waste of money 💰

      • I would never fly first class, but I think this comparison doesn't quite hold.
If you put someone into premium economy, business and first class (I'm getting rid of the "budget" option to stick with my original statement) and then asked them to rate their favourite, the vast majority of people would probably select first class, even if they had no idea about the cost differences.
I don't think that's the case for fancy alcohol. Especially if all the whiskeys in question are something you've never had before.

    • +1

I use to feel like that until i started trying different whiskeys and started noticing difference. I think its the same with wines and other spirits. Same with beers as well. I don't blame you if you can't tell the difference between cheap and expensive stuff. It takes a while and you can only tell the difference if you drink it neat.

If you are an enthusiast and appreciate a good drop, Glenfiddich 18 is a superb dram at this price point. It honestly gives a lot of premium 20+ yr whiskies a run for their money.
Why? it uses the Solera VAT system. This means that 50% is 18yrs and the other 50% is much older than that.
It is aged in Oak, smoked oak and cherry barrels for smoothness and flavour. Do a quick Google search and find out for yourself. You'll also notice some at duty free the Glenfiddich 'Travel series' labelling their bottles as VAT04, VAT03 etc.

Perhaps buying a Glenfiddich/Glenmorangie/Glenlivet 12 at around $50-$60 (BWS cashback deals) is a super price, but if you're after a premium drop for special occasions, the Glenfiddich 15/18 is definitely worth it for a little bit more. Just make sure to share it with friends who actually appreciate and understand whisky.

Grabbed 9 yesterday. Best price so far. Amazon is selling for 134 too.
This 18 is much better than macallan 12

    • Only 9 ;)? Why not the even 10 and clear out the store!

  • +1

    Fak why not Vic fak

  • +2

No better than a Chivas 18 or a Dewars 18 if I'm honest. At this price you'd expect better than 40% ABV.
    You'd get a better experience from a Deanston 12.

Do you drink it with coke or coke zero?

      • I know you're taking the (profanity) piss you funny smart ass 🤣🤣

I liked Glenfiddich 15 more than 18 back when it was cheaper.

      • I seem to remember thinking the same thing… Still got one of these though!
