Planescape Torment still has the best story I have read in an rpg. Takes a patient player to get through.

I came here to say the exact same thing as your first sentence. Best story ever, and by a LARGE margin.

Due to the age of the game, the fighting mechanics (D&D ruleset or whatnot) feel like the first foray into the genre and consequently don't work very well. Expect imbalances and minor frustration. But they are forgivable due to the story.

Focusing on the main character and their story, and making it interesting, helps tremendously. Most games these days have a soul-less and/or speechless protagonist for fear of the protagonists story clashing with the players personality (the risk being that it distances the player from being engrossed in the game). This modern dull-as-lead protagonist crap needs to die, it creates the exact distancing effect that it is meant to avoid.

Recently replayed Torment in preparation for Tides of Numenera (one of only two things I've backed on Kickstarter). Definitely enjoyed, and Tides was fun as well.
