Do you share your Netflix password with friends? New AI set to clamp down on account sharing announced at CES

Link to article.

Might want to prepare for such a move by Netflix to restrict password sharing. Not sure if it will impact faux-family accounts?

  • Are they gonna be like point transfer with Qantas and Velocity? You have to disclose your family members and relationships lol.

not sure how this will work. If they go on GEO location, wont be happy, I have netflix signed in to the two places i frequent, and if I want to sign into a friends devices when im paying for 4 screens, and leave logged in for them to watch, I should have that right. NOTE: I have not read the T&C's lol…

That's where the AI comes in. It could for example determine the distance between the two geo locations and determine that you could not have traveled to those destinations in time.

      • Yes, but why do I pay to be able to stream to 4 TV's at once, is it in the T&C or something that the 4 screens must be in the same house. I get password sharing, and I myself dont password share. But If I log onto a device that has netflix, and create a profile say for my niece who lives 50KM away. why should we not be able to steam at the same time, 50KM's away.

Seriously, you have nothing to worry about with Netflix. It's known that the CEO is pretty lax when it comes to password sharing, as long as you don't sell it.

The Executives know what they're doing… more people means more exposure to advertising and potential future subscribers. They won't crack down.

          • @Ryanek: Ahh sweet, its for people selling there password, its making a lot more sense now. Cheers

          • @Ryanek: What advertising? There aren't any ads on Netflix. Unless it is part of their strategy to introduce that in the future…

I wish we could vote on forum threads. Because this one deserves a neg.

This must be a joke. Netflix isn't good anyways. If they're gonna go ahead with this restriction, I doubt everyone's gonna switch to something else.

    • You don't think people will switch if there's a restriction? That doesn't make much sense since the first part of your reply suggests you think Netflix isn't any good :-/

      • Haha. If they're gonna go ahead with this restriction, everyone's gonna switch to something else. How's it looking now?

        • Your first comment says the opposite

  • This could also impact VPN's

I really don't like when they say "AI" about pretty much every new service.

It seems like a pretty straightforward feature - you get an ip address from every successful sign in attempt, you compare how often it is used to sign in and if there is already someone using the same Netflix account on a different ip address. Mix it with some reasonable thresholds and you are good.

Nothing to do with artificial intelligenceā€¦

  • Has anybody here (except phew - good on you champ) read the bloody article?

    This isn't happening.

  • There are two ways cookies can crumble. Big Cinema might think it can use AI to stop cheats, but don't think that cheats can't use AI for a response. Anyway, Android boxes are cheaper and give far more programs across a wide range of ever increasing and server switching app platforms.
