Many establishments will ask for a credit card for a security deposit

    • Can you please elaborate?

As you check into a hotel - "We need a credit card to hold a $100 security deposit encase you break a bedside lamp or eat the entire minibar"

        Mmmkay

        • Oh yes. definitely.

Also difficult to rent a vehicle without a credit card.

    • Do you think having a Debit card instead of a credit is also considered a good option?

Its possible with Debit Card, but more hoops to jump through and larger security deposits required - hold on funds etc.

        • Got the point. :)

To actually answer your question, it's not necessary as such to carry a credit card for a Euro trip - I just went on a student study tour and most of my fellow students didn't have credit cards at all. It's more important to have a card that you can give hotels to make a deposit or for security, etc. I used a Citibank card myself, as discussed in the first reply here. Worked very well, and isn't a credit card - it was a debit account that I can use online as a Mastercard. Therefore, since it's a Mastercard but only uses my own money, it's technically not a credit card.

Personally, unless you think you'll run out of money or want a backup in case you get cash stolen or something, don't even worry about a credit card. But that's 100% personal opinion. If you want one, def check out the link and look for the ones with free travel insurance, because why not?

    • Thanks heaps. I will look into these option in the link. Lately, someone told me about ING.

Just be aware that if you use a debit card as security in a hotel or for car hire, it will temporarily hold the amount. Then after you checkout the hotel or return the car, it can take days, occasionally a week or more until the funds are accessible again.
If you dont have enough spare funds in your account you can end up with no access to cash at all.
