Recommendations for a 4K Graphics Card Please

Hi Everyone
Just wondering if you can help me out please.
About 12 years ago I built a PC with the following specs (high end at the time..)

· Intel Q6600 Quad Core
· 8GB RAM
· 500GB SSD
· 500GB 3.5inch HDD
· Soundblaster X-Fi Fatal1ty
· Windows 10 Home 64 bit
· Currently has a ATI 2600XT graphics card

I would like to find a good graphics card that is affordable but can also play bluray at 4K resolution on a 4K TV.
If it's not possible on these specs, more than happy to suggest something else?

Any suggestions or recommendations will be welcomed and appreciated :)

  • You've already got what you need as far as I can see.

    • Does the ATI 2600XT support 4K?

      • Nope. Just a quick google on your GPU:

        Max Resolution Details
        DVI: 2560 x 1600 / VGA: 2048 x 1536

Why don't you get a xbox one s or x that's on sale now if watching 4k blueray is all you want to do? Or get a ultra blueray player.

xbox one s supports ultra blueray: Supported resolution is 3840 x 2160
    playstation doesn't suppot ultra blueray

edit: a few deals of one S going around for ~$200 which is probably better than buying a GPU for your old PC.

That's not a "a few years ago" mate. Those specs say more than a decade ago.
Your 2600XT will only go up to 1440p60 on DVI. Better off spending $200-300 on a SFF i3 PC (to use as dedicated HTPC) from places like Aliexpress that has HDMI 2.0 output from Intel iGPU. Those plays UHD 4K Blu-rays MKV perfectly.

    • Thanks Wuzy - yeah forgot it was more like 12 years ago…

    A few years ago

    Uh…

    Q6600

I feel like you're in my age bracket, because yes, to me it seems the Q6600 came out only a few years ago too but that was actually more than a decade ago.

Either that or someone royally ripped you off and actually a few years ago sold you a Q6600….

In any case, you're going to need to do a whole new build - I'm not sure your current build can even support newer graphics cards (in terms of having enough PCI-E lanes, the right power connectors, etc). Or as Oz8argain says, get an Xbox One X.

Ghee time flys… looking back it was 12 years now..
      Makes me feel old

Just updated with the actual build age.

      • Actually if all you want is 4K playback, a tonne of the newer Smart TV boxes do this (Xiaomi Mi Box Pro(?)), or the nVidia Shield, for example.

  • DO you guys think something like this would be suitable?

    • 1050Ti or RX570

      or at least 750Ti

If you wanna play 4K remuxes/rips, get an nVidia Shield.
If you wanna play 4K discs, get an Xbox One S.

    Both will run you ~$250.

  • Wait for the latest AMD cards.

  • Is 4K decoding even that demanding? The recent Intel HD chips list as being able to do 2160p/60fps video decoding for h264 and h265. I'd have figured any (recent-ish) low end card could do it.
