    • do we just grab the bigw catalogue? or will saying it be enough.

      • I got the deal from the printed catalogue in my local newspaper/letterbox. You can simply wait till the catalogue is available online and print or get in letterbox/newspaper. They will need printout or catalogue to pricematch. Not sure if OW will pricematch early or not till 23rd.

There is a "virtual" CD drive that appears when you connect the hard drive to your computer which is just annoying. This is built into the disk controller so cannot be removed.

Also backup software is for Windows only so does not work on other operating systems like Mac OS.

    Otherwise a good price.

    • WTF? HP have this too. thought it was just a WD thing

      • the virtual drive doesn't concern my much. just ignore it, not like ti takes out that much space. as long as the hard drive works and doesn't cause any errors, i'm fine.

        • the virtual drive is not a problem at all.

  • Just format the whole drive and i will become a normal external hdd. Thanks

    • i don't think format will get rid of the virtual drive. i've tried it with the wd's.

"There is a solution to formatting your HP hard drive, even with hidden partitions, that would make it just as any normal hard drive, that could be used for backing up data, or copying data to and from the drive as a normal hard drive.

The answer to this is DiskPart. This is a small disk partitioning application that Microsoft provides as a way to delete partitions, even hidden ones, and create partitions. It is a DOS based application and is run from the cmd syntax.

You just click on Start, and in the run box, type cmd and press enter, and a black screen will open with a blinking cursor, much like the old DOS days. You just type the path for where you have downloaded and saved DiskPart.exe, as an example C:\diskpart.exe and DiskPart will start.

When you first use it, DiskPart can be seem a little hard to use, especially if you are not familiar with DOS command syntax, but just follow the instructions, and you will very quickly have the hard drive partitions deleted and new one(s) created that will be able to store and retrieve normal files from.

Link to Microsoft for the download of DiskPart.exe. Just save it to a location where you will be able to locate when you are in the DOS black screen.

Link to Microsoft where you can read about the DiskPart commands before you use the application.

This will remove all the data from the hard drive, so if you have any on it now that you need to keep, copy it to another location before using DiskPart.

        Hope this helps."

        • thanks, will try it when i get it on the weekend.

        • You can also download the free Gparted linux partioning tool that will enable you to wipe that drive clean.
You can download the .iso and burn that to a CD and then boot with that.

  • If anything happens to hard drive during warranty period……..can they be replaced in Australia? Last time I had to mail my WD HDD to singapore for replacement……

  • any comments on the quality/reliability of these drives (versus samsung story, WD, etc)?

  • good price, but hp products aren't the most reliable in the world… and questionable reliability isn't something you'd usually want with a hard drive

    • is this based on your experience or some reviews…?

    • +1

I completely agree with you. I would never touch a HP product ever again based on my personal experience.

    • please backup your claims of unreliability.

      • uh… okay rolls eyes well, i/family members have owned a HP pc, two printers and a notebook and none have lasted more than two years. also have numerous friends who have had similar issues with HP.

        • my 2001 hp ran fine up until i gave up with 600Mhz and 128mb ram back in 2007. explain that. thanks.

I work for an organization with thousands of HP servers/desktops/printers/notebooks and we have no problems getting 3-4 years out of devices before refreshing them - not because they don't work but because they are out of warranty/outdated/etc.

Yes we have failures, but not more than what should be expected.
Granted, you are probably referring to cheap consumer computers/devices which aren't made like the business products - however your experience doesn't warrant claims of HP products being unreliable.

        • My 4ish year old business HP NC8230 still runs fine on Windows 7. =)

You are not the only one. A couple of my friends who used to owned HP laptops have had their fair share of problems. And yes, they will help you with product warranty. However, the problem shouldn't be there in the first place.

I bought a HP laptop in May last year. It's been in to get "fixed" 3 times already and I'm in the process of getting it sent in again due to a hardware problem. The last 2 laptops before that were HP/Compaq and they also had many problems in their lifespan. I've sworn off HP laptops for good now and I'm really hesitant to buy one of these drives based on my previous experiences with their subpar hardware.

        • Perhaps, they don't make them like they used to. =S I did have ONE single problem with the sd-card reader (which did not work at all after windows7 upgrade) but that was recently fixed with a new HP software release =D.
