PayPal Pending Payment Now Cancelled?

I don't quite understand what is going on. I sold an item on eBay. The buyer paid but the payment has been pending for nearly a week. My guess was this was because the buyer paid using funds from this bank account which can take several business days? The money was in my account, but it was still marked as pending.

The payment now says 'Payment received - cancelled', but the funds are still in my account.

I haven't sent anything, and I won't until I know for sure that the funds have cleared.

What's happening here? Thanks in advance

  • You got "free" money. Wait for him to sort it out with Paypal, If he doesn't sort it out it's some kind of scam, no one willingly lets money go to someones account when it's not supposed to.

    Don't post anything

Wait 4 years for the transaction to appear on your account, then complain to the bank.

  • What did the buyer say when you contacted them?

    • Nothing to do with the buyer - all PayPal's work

    • I just said that the payment was still pending and that I would send the goods once the funds have cleared. He replied back just saying 'ok thanks'. He then sent another message a few days after that asking for an update. I said that the funds were still pending, and he just replied with pretty much the same response.

After noticing the funds were 'cancelled', I sent him another message asking if he had cancelled the payment. No answer yet, and I sent another message this morning saying that I'd have to cancel the sale if the funds aren't cleared soon.

  • Sometimes when I purchased from sellers I'd get that message and after a set amount of time I would receive the money back. The reason was because the seller had a their Paypal and eBay account set with different email addresses.

  • Is the fund still pending in your account?

    • I initially received an eCheque PayPal payment on the day he bought the goods. My PayPal balance reflected this as it was higher, which was strange because the payment was still pending. But now it's changed to 'Payment received - cancelled'. The funds are still in my account and my eBay page says 'awaiting payment' and gives me the option of reminding the buyer to pay as so and so many days have now passed. I really don't understand what is happening.

      • An eCheck is an electronic payment funded by the buyer’s bank account. With an eCheck, the recipient should receive the money within 3-6 business days.

Both eChecks and Instant Transfers are ways to pay with your bank account. With an Instant Transfer, the recipient receives the money right away. You only need to have a confirmed U.S. bank account to send an eCheck, but an Instant Transfer also requires a backup funding source such as a credit or debit card registered on your PayPal account.

        For buyers:
Before you make a payment, make sure you have enough money in your bank account to cover the eCheck. If there’s not enough money in your bank account, the bank will decline the payment and PayPal will represent it a second time.

If you’d like to cancel an eCheck after it’s issued, please call your bank. If you’d like to cancel an eCheck that has already cleared, please contact the seller directly to request a refund.

      • I meant to ask if the fund available for you to withdraw or it is still pending.

If it is still, then it will disappear soon.

        • Even when it was pending, the funds were in my account. My balance shows the added funds i.e. I can withdraw the funds if I wanted to. Even now that it's 'cancelled', the funds are still in my balance.

  • I just checked his feedback, and the last seller commented, 'failed to pay'. Could this mean the buyer is trying to pull some kind of scam?

    • Yes, if you can just cancel now and re-list the item honestly. eCheque are often very sketchy in my experience.

    • Maybe he's trying to see if at least some sellers will post the item not really noticing/ caring that the funds are still pending.
