Does EB Games Not Price Match Amazon AU?

Just went into buy a game and was told they don't price match Amazon au because they don't have a physical store.

I thought they did. I haven't been to eb games in a while due to the high prices and only really found out today. That's suck and are missing out a lot of potential buyers.
I know jb hifi price matches Amazon.
I'm also trying to buy from local physical stores but if they don't want my money then fine, I'll buy somewhere else.

They also often refuse price match if store they are matching is not in same town, I think 1 other day even told me it had to be store in same shopping centre.
Very dodgy price matching policy IMO . Some stores are better than others though and some are quite happy to price match.
When they told me they will only price match if it's in same shopping centre, I was thinking, well if you're going to be like that, why wouldn't I just buy from other store in the same shopping centre.

why wouldn't I just buy from other store in the same shopping centre.

Especially as they often say the other store has to have stock.

I guess if you have gift cards to use that would be one reason to match

They wouldn't match a HN in the same suburb.

No, it has to be within a certain distance. E.g Last time I was there someone got in an argument with the salesperson that whatever they were trying to match was in stock in I think it was Harvey Norman Wodonga or Albury lol.

Richmond happily matched Chadstone JB. Maybe because I'm a level 2 (almost 3) member but they did it regardless.

      • It's more just random. Some stores are dicks.

It depends on the person serving you but I've heard of some pretty arbitrary excuses not to price match at EB Games when I've tried. I've pretty much stopped bothering.

Why not shop at the place that is offering the better price in the first place.

      • I was in the shopping centre at the time doing groceries. Harvey Norman was about a 5 min car ride.

      • Depends if you have a gift card for that certain place or not.

    • Yeah, I've had the same experience. One EB refused to price match as the store wasn't in the same shopping centre. Though the last EB I price matched agreed to match HN even though they're a few km's down the road.

    • Unless you have a compelling reason not to, my rule is to ALWAYS give the business to the store offering the best price rather than price match.

  • I think their policy might require a printed catalog.

No. I've been told over the phone that they only do price match "locally", which they mean that it has to be around the same shopping centre or within walking distance, and also must be in stock.

  • last time i asked and the guy gave me a lecture on why amazon was able to sell at a much lower price. Anyway the answer is no from my previous experience.

they don't price match Amazon au

    Ok

I know jb hifi price matches amazon.

ok, go there….. Why the need for a thread?

I'm also trying to buy from local physical stores but if they don't want my money

Oh now I see why the thread, So you want to buy from local stores to get it instantly, but at discounted online prices. You searched the internet for the cheapest price and then when to the closest store for a price match. They declined, so now having a whinge about them. Got it.

So you want to buy from local stores to get it instantly, but at discounted online prices

You nailed it. How damn entitled can someone be?!

  • They only match real shops that are within a reasonable distance from where you're purchasing from.
I'm guessing it's because most websites aren't Australian and aren't real competitors.

  • Wanna tell us what the game is? We can provide a recommendation.

    • Assasins Creed Odessey. :)

  • Why don't you just buy from Amazon?

Sometimes it's nice to walk away with it the same day. Especially if you're already out.

      • +3

and that means paying a premium for the experience.

        • +3

Yes that's why we try price match

EBGames won't be around for much longer. With increased competition from Amazon and JB compounded by the rise of digital sales I give them a few more years before they're out of business.

Gamestop is haemorrhaging hundreds of millions in the US too.

Agree, their business model is very outdated and I never see any customers in my local store.

The staff i've dealt with were also very rude/uninterested when discussing price matching or trading old games.

    • +1

I very rarely buy physical copies anymore so I don'ty visit places like EB Games unless they have hardware specials.

      I much prefer digital.

I'm too old and lazy to get up and change a disc. I'll happily pay a (small) premium for a digital copy.

There's always going to be the market for Mum & Dad shoppers buying games for their kids but surely that business alone wouldn't be profitable.

      • Same. I have over 300 games on my Xb1 and about 100 on my PS4 (ok many of those are freebies but I'm not sitting there and working it out)and own 4 discs across both consoles (one being Lego Dimensions which wasn't available digitally - I miss that game).

Luckily I'm a patient gamer (with a significant virtual pile of shame) and will wait for a good deal.

You know, most gamers finish their games and go trade them in ( that what I do) everytime I trade in I get half my money back or just…then you can buy yourself new game for the price of pre-owned. Eb games are awesome, it is NOT obligated for them to price-match. Point being, if you show up being total prock demanding this and that causing a fuss…I wouldn't do it either. Now on the other hand, there are realllllllll idiots working at a few of them. Do you have a EB membership? Do you purchase many things from that shop or jus on off? All these matter. NOT JUST EB GAMES, coffee shops do the same, serve the regulars before the randomn, bars do the same, restaurants etc… I DOUBT ANY standing member that is a gamer can agree with your tragic comments. Leave eb to gamers then and go buy it from Amazon? Arrogance, ego, self entitlement and a flair of the world owes me attitude. I dare say you will have issues wherever you go mate. Read a book.

          Wow… What the heck?

Was that replying to my comment?

    • EB Games still going. PS5 sales definitely helped and they've diversified in to apparel.

  • Does Amazon AU Not Price EB Games?

The amount of whinging with price matching astounds me in this forum.

I've had JB refuse to price match because Amazon were giving too big of a discount compared to their price..

    • Really? I have yet to be refused a price match at my local Jb.

      • +1

Yep, Amazon had the product I wanted for 249, was 400 at JB and they refused.

Just means more business for Amazon and more likely to look there first instead of JB

        • Scratch that, I just got refused today and was told that they are not supposed to match with Amazon because they are an online store.
such BULL. I guess it really depends on the store and who you talk to.

  • +2

I've stopped trying to get things price matched, particular at my local store. I would rather wait the extra few days for delivery from Amazon rather then have to deal with the attitude I often get. Plus I know I'm guaranteed an actual new copy with Amazon.

  • Huh, I didn't know that any JB-HIFI would price match Amazon Au. Will have to ask my local.

    • Neither did I until this thread!

Did price matches at two different JB HiFi stores yesterday, both for in-stock games which were substantially cheaper at Amazon AU.

  • My local EB said they don't match Amazon also, but they matched JB with just looking at price I showed her on phone.

  • Haven't bought a single thing from EB games in years and never will again. They've always been a a total ripoff with their prices, especially back in the day before online dealers/digital games were mainstream. I still remember the days of new releases being $119.95. Being often the only store stocking many games, gamers were forced to put up with them. Once the other players started coming in they kept backtracking on their price match policy (seriously, only price matching from a store in the same shipping centre is ludicrously desperate). Not sure why anyone would bother with them anyway. Reward the original store which offered it cheaper in the first place.

My local eb are awesome. Staff are friendly and helpful. When I've gone in for warranty change, they do it without question and have price matched with just a quick look at my phone of the opposing retailer

Just want to share my very recent experience with EB. Asked one of the staff whether they do price match, he said they will price match everything but console. Then I showed big w website for pokemon go + pokeball which sold for $69. He was happy to price match it but only the eevee version as what big w showed on the website. He then took the the stock from the back. When he about to enter the sale to the register, the other staff asked which store it was and whether the website showed there was any stock. I showed them that all nearby big W store had it. Then he said they cant price match because big w said it was on “sale” which means clearance and they dont price match clearance items. They happy to price match jb hifi for $99 instead. I said i will think about it, the first asked whether i want them to hold the item at the counter. I said dont worry about it i will just go to jb hifi to get the price match and left. Went to jb hifi after that and get the price matched without any issue at all.

    Shame on you EB games.

Edit: i know this is about eb games and amazon, but to show that eb games price match policy is a joke and always want to dodge it.

    • Damn

  • A piece of possibly useful advice I could give people is that Amazon rarely, if ever, seems to set game prices of their own accord, and instead they peg their price to the best available price at another Australian store (or online store that ships to Aus).

If you can work out which store they're matching at the time for the game you want, you could probably get EB to match that store, rather than Amazon.

Try searching on something like canspend.com and see if you can find it.

    • This. My observations are Amazon prices are in response to an oz retailer, or vice versa.
