Hobart attractions

Hey guys

I booked a flight to Hobart to spend Easters long weekend over there. I am single and was planning to hire a car and travel to:

  • Cradle Mountain for two days of walking and/or touring whatever affordable attractions that may be there;
  • Hobart downtown walk; and
  • Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary to spend a half-day

I highly appreciate it if anyone with experience let me know if I can improve this list.

I'll be there 4 full days as my flights are on Thursday and Monday.

I usually look at Viator and replicate the ones I am interested.

    Check out MONA

Cradle mountain is not at Hobart.

If you're hiking for 2 days, its a half day drive each way, so you have a day free.

Longer than half a day. The '10 year' midlands highway upgrade has made a good portion of it a 40km gravel zone for years.

      • Thanks mate; good to know I thought it would be an easy 4.5 hr drive; will need to look closer now

      • Yes I drive up the Midlands highway the other day, if you head north allow an extra 45 minutes in your journey, roadworks all over the place

        • One of the few places you'll find the motorcycle cops hiding in a ditch too!

Cradle mountain is way out, it's closer to Launceston. You can do Salamanca Market on Saturday, MONA, Mt Wellington, Freycinet National Park (Wineglass Bay), Fortescue Bay, Bruny Island (never been), Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary (also never been).

Makes me want to go back :)

I agree, cradle mountain is too far. Also as beautiful as it is, I think it's a little overrated. There are many national parks in Tassie, this just has the most infrastructure to handle bus loads of tourists and the most photographed. Unless your goal is to get that token snap for Instagram, head somewhere closer to Hobart. Also the weather is usually better on the east coast. Cradle is hard to plan for a tight timeline as I'd the weather is terrible there (which is often is) then it's pointless.

Freycinet is busy too, though closer. If you walk a little further than the wineglass bay lookout, the tourists are far less.

      • Great tips thank you

They are great suggestions. I wouldn't do Fortescue bay unless you are also visiting Port Arthur. I also wouldn't camp there on that weekend, it will be chock a block full.

Bruny is beautiful. I'd suggest staying overnight there and having a good explore. I think there is a new system for the ferry where you have to book tickets in advance so best to check that out as it will be very busy down there on that weekend

What stuff are you interested in? Nature? Convict ruins? Art? Adventure? Food?

    • I really wanted to see some nature and wildlife, hence the walk and the sanctuary. Now, we have wildlife and sanctuary also in other parts of Australia, e.g. in Alice Springs, but I thought to see Tasmanian devils, etc in there.

I might cross Cradle Mountain off the list due to the above comments but visiting done of the East coast instead.

So, a couple of days hiking, tramping in conservation parks in addition to downtown and the animal sanctuary.

      Regards

Should have fly in via Hobart and out via Launceston, which was what i did previously on my 2nd visit so my mates can visit Cradle Mountain.

        • Agreed and saw several comments on TripAdvisor about this. But, my ticket was an ANZ travel adventure credit card flight redemption, which I assumed (not checked) won't work that way.

Bonorong is a great wildlife park I highly recommend it. While your out that way go to Richmond - beautiful historic town and has the best hand made ice-cream I've ever had, I think the place is called Coal Valley Icecreamery.

If you want to do some great walks near Hobart check out Mt Wellington - fantastic views and a myriad of different walks.

East Coast is good, you probably need a day or two to really enjoy it. If you go there you should visit Frecinyt, Douglas Aspley National Park and Maria Island if you can.

In Hobart I'd suggest you go to MONA even if you don't like art, it's pretty wacky and something you can tell your mates about. If you are into beer the Cascade Brewery tour is pretty popular.

Bonorong is amazing, consider paying the extra and do the night feeding tour. Did it a few years ago and it was only a group of 4 people and we had the place to ourselves for about 3 hours it was amazing.

Freycinet (Wineglass Bay), Binalong Bay (Bay of Fires), Mt Wellington (Hobart), Mt Field National Park (2 Hours from Hobart)

Mt field is a good one ( and closer to 60-90 minutes out)..you can drive a little further and go to the Styx valley to see the tall trees. Or you can go to the Tarn Shelf walk which is a relatively easy 3 hour walk. It starts in a picturesque pandani grove too.

If you are flying into Hobart, forget Cradle Mountain. You will waste too much time travelling.
Definitely do Mt Wellington, Salamanca Market, Port Arthur (Do the Ghost Tour!!), Tahune Air Walk (National Park).
    Relax & enjoy your trip!

Definitely check out MONA! Even if you’re not into art you still might enjoy it, the collection is predominantly made up of the owners own eclectic collection as well as site specific works. I think it would be fair to say it’s one of the most interesting galleries in the world. And it’s carved out of Tas sandstone so the building itsself is pretty cool. There’s also a brewery. That’s what gambling can getcha kids. Lol but srsly.
