Amazon Membership Still Charged after Closing Account

So my wife created an amazon account and bought something off them.

She joined the Amazon Prime Free Trial, but after a few days, cancelled it.

Cut to a month later, and they decided to charge her the $4.99 monthly fee.

After contacting them via email and chat, they couldnt validate her account anymore, so they couldnt stop the monthly Prime charge. Only thing they could do was close the account (which was fine by us).We have written evidence of them saying they have closed the account.

Now after another month, they decided to charge her AGAIN. We cant login to the website, and AFAIK, i cant contact them if I dont sign in.

We have had to cancel our credit card now just so they stop charging her now…….

What else could we have done, with their dodgy practises?

Sure, it's only $4.99 per month, but the fact they can still charge us is freakin' dodgy af.

    CC Chargeback?

  • Chargeback from the bank?

Next time sign up through PayPal if that's an option.

That's not an option on Amazon. They like to store your credit card details

    • Amazon is a huge company they don't need to rely on a third party to process their payments and just do it directly

    You cancelled the card?!

    • It was an additional card, so not a huge deal

I had the same experience with an Amazon Audio membership I took out early last year and cancelled within the month, then Amazon starting charging again six months later. They refunded the money and confirmed the account was closed, but then debited me the following month again. They refunded after I called again. Very frustrating …

Does your bank have some kind of fraud department you could discuss with? Because it sounds like fraud.

Had similar issues with Amazon and Audible. Had to get chargeback off credit card and put a block on Amazon with that credit card.

    • Nothing I love more than slapping a chargeback on a greedy overseas corporation. Well, okay, a class action lawsuit would be even better.

I signed up foe the prime trial but never used it. Cancelled before the one month was up but was charged for the next 6 months. I didn't notice till the 6th month. Called them up and they closed they account and reversed all the charges ans were super helpful.

    • I paid for 6 months and never bought anything from them..

talk to livechat they will refund it,

Done it in the past for kindle unlimited.

Just tell them you forgot you had subscribed to it and hadnt used it

        • Neat idea. I didn't think they would do that. They certainly are under no obligation to.

But I don't think I can use that claim because I signed up again for a full year after that (the 6 months was month by month). I did make a couple of purchases, but would have got free shipping for those anyway so didn't gain any real benefit. But I'll keep it anyway just in case something interesting goes on sale and I can buy it without spending $49 for free shipping.

Other than that small use case, I haven't found much value behind AU prime. I don't care for their streaming services.

They will, Amazon places customer service as their biggest focus. They will give you all sorts of free stuff if you just ask for it to keep you happy as it's more likely you will talk to your friends about how Amazon did you a solid and they will regard it as a more trusted brand this way. One time an item had very expensive shipping from the USA and I asked them if they could reduce the cost and they said they couldn't but they waived the shipping fee for my order entirely as a once-off. The customer support staff are trained to create 'moments'.

            • @Agret: Did you place the order first and ask them to reduce the cost, or you asked them before you placed it?

              • @lostn: I hadn't placed it yet but I saw the item was fulfilled by Amazon themselves, it was a board game that I couldn't find locally but the shipping was almost double the price of the item. This was actually before we got Amazon AU. The rep told me to place the order and he would refund the shipping and true to his word that's what happened.
