Why Is London Flight So Expensive in July?

Looking to go to London in July (6th-27th) but prices are $1800ish for a decent flight which feels bit to much. Even looked at going via Paris, Amsterdam and other airports in UK but still prices are high.

Any advice on how to get cheaper or is that what im going to have to pay?

It's summer. It's peak season. You can't avoid it. The only wait to avoid it would be to change your dates.

To be honest, $1800 is not a bad price for July. I've seen people pay $2000-$2300+ for that time of year to Europe.

    School holidays.

  • Peak.
July/August, is generally expensive unless you get in REALLY early
Shoulder, end August-Sept it starts to get cheaper.

People on OzBargain always suggest that but it's flawed for several reasons.

      (i) OP was only considering "decent", probably quick flights to begin with. Empirical evidence tells me that most people with kids aren't really OzBargainers when it comes to "travelling with them" time.
(ii) Scoot prices go up in high season as for everyone else
(iii) Most families travelling for 3 weeks take luggage (and will probably buy food on-board), increasing Scoot's real cost.
(iiii) I don't think flying from London to Athens in late July, let alone with luggage, will be a cost saving exercise.
      (v) OP could already pay less by flying +/- a few days either way, which he'll lose playing the connection game
(vi) I could never advise anybody to travel on separate tickets in high season to save $50, let alone amateurs. The price of last minute tickets are way too high, so you'd want to be back in Athens well ahead of time.

      • did a quick search on Scoot. -tried berlin instead.

$5132 (2 adults + 2 children including luggage but not food) for Perth Berlin return.

via skyscanner - Berlin to London is ~$260 (each way for 4)

so looking at ~$5700 all up

spend a couple of days in Berlin each side.

Scoot from Perth to Athens is $5033 with bags / but no food.
athens to london would be similar as berlin.

athens flights are a bit cheaper if you play with dates.

        spend a-couple-a-days in Athens. sweet.

nearly $2000 cheaper than OPs skyscanner search

that's how I travel with my kids.

It'c ICC cricket World Cup in london in July. Ticket will be expensive. The world cup ends on 14 July.

  • Summer in the UK. 1800 doesn't seem too bad.

  • Peak? School Holidays? Middle of Aus Winter? Middle of European Summer?

If you can make it work and dont mind the extra travel, fly into a cheaper EU hub E.G. Rome, Madrid, Barcelona, Dublin to name a few…..on Emirates/Etihad etc.

Flying into London is always much more expensive due to airport taxes Heathrow charge the airlines.

Depends on your travel arrangements though ;)

I just wanted to clarify that in July and August you're pretty much competing with an entire hemisphere during their summer holiday season. And 90% of the world lives in that hemisphere. And most of the world's wealth.

When I lived in London, the prices to popular and "summery" destinations just a few hours away were at their worst in August, but the more significant and unavoidable cost over a 3 week holiday was accommodation. I ended up camping a lot more than I expected.

I always tell people to do "summery" European places in May if budget is more important than heat and summer vibes. Check for yourself.

im curious why its so cheap in january

    • Winter but not Christmas

      • thanks, i never knew

  • Interestingly enough even though the cost of airfares tends to go up the number of points required to get an airfare doesn't seem to be affected.
