$2000 gaming desktop - advice please

Hey fellow bargain hunters.

I don’t have the knowledge to sort a gaming PC out for my son but was hoping you experts can help.

I have $2,000ish to spend on the box (already have the monitor/keyboard/etc) and was hoping to get something with 16g ram, hopefully 8gb GPU and at least an i7 or AMD equivolent CPU.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Thanks heaps

Dan

    • Holy hell that's a nice build for that price!

Ah. PC Partpicker has nice guides - and best of all, they also show you which shops have each individual part the cheapest.

I personally like the new AMD chips over Intel, so have a look at this one:

Note: The Ryzen 2 2600X is not an i7 equivalent CPU, but for a gaming build at this price point - unless your son is also doing a lot of 3D CAD or video rendering work, that level of CPU is really neither required nor even recommended - better to spend the same money on the GPU. An Intel equivalent of the above build would be:

  • If the Dell laptop you bought in Dec 17(did you end up buying it?) went well then maybe consider one of their gaming machines.

Other than that, if he's old enough he could build it with you from watching youtube videos. It's a fun process. Get more bang for your buck and can pick components. Turn it into an educational experience for both of you.

    • I like this for 2000 although i would drop down to an I5 8400 and increased SSD up to 1Tb

  • Building a PC is a good idea. It's really not that difficult, and can be a good activity to do with your kid. You'll figure it all out together and feel proud for building something good, and learning more about how it all works. It's almost always cheaper too, but more importantly it will let you think about how to upgrade it over the next few years, and become a little bit of a hobby thing to work on

  • ryzen 5 2600 or 2600x cpu
    rx 580 8gb graphics card
16GB RAM with at a minimum 2666MHz preferably 3000 or 3200, the RGB options from gskill trident z rgb and corsair vengeance pro look nice
Samsung 970 Evo 500GB nvme SSD
Extra 1tb or 2tb mechanical hard drive if required
550-650w PSU from a decent brand (EVGA, Corsair etc)
B450 motherboard (the B450 AORUS M from Computer Alliance eBay goes ok for $149)
Decent case like the meshify C will look nice
and maybe some RGB fans to finish it off. If he loves his RGB you can get some Deepcool rf120 fans (3 or 5 pack) and the gammax gt RGB CPU cooler and it creates quite a nice effect to round off the build and will all sync up together with the RGB pins on the motherboard

Thats my recommendation, should easily be under 2k when ebay has their 20% off sale

    • I like your offer. And how much will it all cost if you add the RTX 2080?

  • OP in case you haven't seen this yet:

    Intel-i7 8700 RTX 2080 8GB 240GB SSD 16GB DDR4 Gaming Computer $1919.20 Delivered @ eBay TechFast.

Basically exactly what you're looking for, for <$2,000.
