Cheapest Way to Keep Rarely Used Telstra Mobile Number Active

So I use my work phone pretty much 24/7 but don't want to cancel my old personal mobile number.

I'm with telstra now and paying $35/m on contract (byo mobile) with like 5gb data/m

I'm open to transferring the number to another provider (would prefer one with good coverage) and ultimately looking for a very low monthly cost.

Id looked into something prepaid. But worry that if I forget to top up. At some stage the number might get cancelled?

Any thoughts?

This has been asked before several times. Cheapest were Aldi and Amaysim.
Aldi is $5 for first 365 days then $15 top up for every 365 thereafter. You'll need to remember to top up every year. They might send out a reminded but not sure. I think theres a 3 month period after credit expires before you lose the number.

Aldi also uses Telstra so if your phone is locked then it still works. You can get auto recharge if remembering is a bother and they will send you an email when they have taken your money.

  • Vodafone allows prepaid numbers to last up to 395 days without recharge. Read the last question on the following page.

For Telstra/Optus prepaid numbers, I think it is 6 months after credits expires.

If you are using a dual SIM phone and happy to accept incoming calls/msg only on this SIM, I do not see any problems to stretch to the expiry date.

maybe have a look at TPG $1 per month pay as you go plan. it's direct debit so you can set and forget.

note that there is not much call allowance.

  • Thanks guys, really helpful.

  • Spoke to Telstra and advised i was leaving for $1/month TPG plan and they offered $5/month for 2GB (no calls or text) so will remain with them for now. Cheers for the help guys
