Nikon D3100 + 18-55mm VR $707- JB Hi-Fi

420

Hi all. First post. After trawling whirlpool and many hours researching I purchased a D3100 w/ 18-55 from JB-Hifi for $707 after negotiation (listed price is $777 which is still the best on the market). For a legit D3100, I believe this is the cheapest you can get.

I was very close to buying it from Citiwide (grey import) for ~$613 inc postage.

To me, the extra $90 or so was worth it for local stock for a couple of reasons:
- you get the camera straight away, no waiting for the postman
- local warranty, easy to chase up
- free extended warranty from credit card (1 year)
- can easily sell the camera when it's time to upgrade(imports usually trade at much less)

Overall, very happy with the camera as my first DSLR.

Here's a few of the first shots i've taken with the kit lense(after a bit of post-processing):

Happy zombie jesus day!

I bought this from Citiwide. Took 3 days to arrive via DHL. Supposedly has 18 months warranty as i bought through paypal plaza(promo) and came with a free lens cleaning pen(not worth much).
Great camera. My first DSLR as well. Cost me total of $610.

Excellent; Did it come in the retail box? Just wondering because I was really close to buying it from Citiwide.

The 18 month warranty was tempting, but then I found out that my credit card does a free extra year of warranty for locally purchased goods.

      • +2

Yes It came in a proper Nikon kit retail box.

      • I duno, Citiwide sells you the hood/caps as 'optional extras' for $5 each, and after last time I spent 6wks having a lens fixed at LOCAL warranty I'm not about to go mail order for $100 savings.

        • I think with CitiWide the optional extras are actually extra to the standard maufacturer caps etc. such that if you don't pay for these extra ones the original manufacturer ones are still in the box.

Others who have bought lenses from CW might confirm this….?

    • i want to buy D7000, but it is little but more then $1000 and Citiwide send it from HK = need to pay GST and other expenses, right?

      • +1

I think you can ask them to write down the value a little bit for customs. Heard of people doing this.

excellent price considering its local stock, def worth the extra 90 dollars over the grey import any day!

  • Great price for this camera! Nice bargaining.

  • +2

nice. I want an DSLR desperately but it seems like it could turn into an expensive hobby and besides I don't have the $$$ at the moment. Definately something that I would like to get into within the next few years though.

Tell me about it. I bought my wife a Nikon D700 so she could take baby photos. It reignited her passion for photography (she used to work in advertising) and we ended up spending about $8k in equipment in a year (lenses, carbon tripod, fancy ballhead, filters).

        Did you get a bigheadache?

      • Thats the reason why I avoiding buying my missus one.

        • +1

Nikon D3100 is a good option for the missus. I am a mum of 3 and this camera fits in my handbag. It goes every where with me. Rarely ever miss a shot. I had the D40 for about 4 yrs then upgraded to D3100. The only thing I don't like about the D3100 is that since it has HD recording, battery doesn't as long if u record videos. But the video is quite handy. I also like that I can crop now with the higher MPs.

If u really want to spend extra money, enrol yourself into a course. I know so many friends that buy the best cameras i.e 5D MKII but r just beginners and someone that knows what they're doing can take a better picture with a compact!

Even later when you decide to upgrade, you will still keep the D3100 for it's compact size and fast responsiveness. Many Nikon pros will never sell their D40 coz it's obsolete. Should be the same with the D3100. I got $480 for my D40 when I sold it!

  • got mine imported from hong kong for just over $590 (postage included) with a 18-55mm lens too. came in retail box and everything. ordered on friday morning, arrived on monday with DHL

great deal for local stock though

i have a sony a230… tried the nikon d700 in japan with a 28-300 2.8 i think…. truly amazing photo quality. Cost a fortune though… although it is much cheaper over there than here…. great camera to upgrade to

    • truly amazing photo quality

Pssst … it's all in the lens

      • no it's not
and there is no 28-300 2.8

        • you think the camera body made the photos look good?

  • +1

Very nice, love your sample shots. Really shows the camera and lens (artist) quality.

    • Thanks!

  • Good deal. I got a D3100 with the 18-55mm and 55-200mm from Clive Peeters for about $830 on special, last one left.

    This is a great deal.

  • +2

Great deal, but I'd rather go for the D90 or the D7000 instead. A bit dearer but quality speaks.

  • Very nice price for the D3100!

    a plus from me.

I bough this for ~550aud last October so for me, it's not a bargain

    • Good purchase, where did you get it from so cheap?

  • +1

I bought the body only for $550 del. This camera has been a bargain for awhile as an entry model it's a great successor to the brilliant Nikon D40. Nikon's kit lenses are also very good. But I suggest you get the cheap Nikon 35mm F/1.8g prime lens. The combination is so compact yet takes brilliant clear pics..best prime camera!

    • +1

Got any sample shots?? Is that 35mm an AF-S lens? Is it much better than the 18-55 when you set it to 35? I'm really tempted for the portability.

I've heard the the Tamron 28-75 2.8 is a very nice lens to have too.

      • +1

The 18-55 is 3/3.5f or a larger f number if i am correct. Smaller f is better for taking pictures in lower light condition. So if you don't mind the fixed 35mm then the 35mm F1.8 is relatively better. On the other hand, if you like to take pictures at different distances then the 18-55 is better since it's more versatile. Hope it helps.

        • I see, so because it has a smaller F number, it has a larger maximum aperture, therefore better in low light. All makes sense now. Thanks!

      • I've got the tamron len and it's good for the price you pay. I'm using it on a 1.6 crop and the only issue I have is with taking group photos in a small area else the bokeh and 2.8f are very good to have. It's pretty good for portraits as well.

  • The 35 1.8 is a lot better than the 18-55, for image quality as well as learning.
