  • wonder if the cutout is necessary with these (to protect my erection)

If your erection is pointing toward the ground when riding you're doing it wrong.

Serious answer: some people get pressure down there and need the cutouts. Personally I've never needed them.

    • If you get the right sized saddle for your sit bones, I think there shouldn't be any pressure on the perineum. You do go forward on the saddle though when going up steep hills or spinning fast.

right size for sit bones != perineal cutout

width is more related to other pressure areas, like groin and freedom of thigh movement.

    • serious comment: pressure on the prostate after many hours of riding leads to erectile dysfunction. some saddles are so flexy that it's not needed, but i don't know if it's worth it to try because i usually need a narrower saddle so getting a wider one (where more flex because more surface area) will give me other problems (thighs rubbing).

even deviating from my usual narrow saddles gives me pain in groin.

      • The road bike variants are less curved, narrower and much harder than the commuting/touring saddles.

The trade-off is they cost a fair bit more and take much longer to break in.

    • I've been through a dozen saddles over the journey and had a couple of professional bike fits. i now ride on a Selle SMP with a cutout and for me, it is the most comfortable I've ever had. Without a cutout or channel I experience numbness that is quite independent to the width of my sit bones. I've had several saddles (Bontrager, Fizik) without cutouts or with small cutouts for which i was measured up on the regular gel cushion thingo. All were a waste of time becvaue I was numb 5 mins from home.

    are these vegan?

  • Steve Abraham used the B17 for his HAMR attempt.

  • These are polarising bits of kit, they have their devotees and folks tend to either love them or hate them. They seem to be most loved by the retro/'steel is real' old school cyclists. That said, saddle fit is a very personal thing.

  • I remember when I would only race on Brookes saddles, and no I'm not that old, well maybe old enough to remember seeing Phil Anderson and Anna Wilson in the Bay Series

  • I've been using them for over ten years (B17 that got recked in a storm and now a C17).
    Say what? They got recked?

    • The B17 got absolutely soaked overnight in a tropical storm. Was never the same.

Proofide makes them water resistant but if the leather ones get saturated in water it's over.

The cambium models are maintenance free and weatherproof.

      • I got talked into a c17 over a b17 for my mega Europe tour. Weatherproofing won me over. In 13,000km it rained a handful of times and never got soaked, was wishing I had the extra comfort of a b17 instead haha.

Thinking of grabbing one to try it out…
