Kelvinator Air Conditioning Remote Issue?

I purchased three Kelvinator KSV25HRG units I'm back in December of 2017 and they all run perfectly well. They are very quiet and efficient and I have used them the past two Summers with zero issues.

The remotes are however very temperamental and require you to be at a certain angle before any clicks will register. Even when they are working at a certain angle they I'll work at times and not work with a few clicks needed to register the input.

These are the first split systems that I have ever owned and was wondering if this is just a normal thing with air conditioning systems or are Kelvinator remotes just not that good.

I wonder if the newer Kelvinator remotes will work with my system? I don't know if it's the IR sensor on the unit or remote that's rubbish.

Probably worth calling Kelvinator and asking. They may replace them for free under warranty.

    • All units are affected so I am lead to believe it is just a design issue. Kelvinator has said that it will cost me $95 for a call out if it not a "manufacturing fault".

Mail them back for assessment and save the call out fee

    Out of range
Check if the remote control is within its operating range, which is 5 to 7 metres.

    Faulty remote
    Get a new remote control.

    Interference
If there is an appliance causing magnetic, electrical interference or obstruction placed near the unit it may be affecting operation of the remote control. In this case, remove the other appliance away from the unit.

    Flat batteries
    Replace the batteries

Possibly the remote? Buy a generic remote from Aliexpress. ~$5 delivered. I bought a replacement for my Panasonic air-con and it worked perfectly.

Sounds like a cheap receiver with a small angle of reception. I have the same problem with my TV.

    • I think this maybe it.

Depends how much it annoys you.

        Solutions I can think of:
Use a IR emitter (like this) for $10-30 each
Try a 'learning remote' to see if the problem is the remote not being powerful enough
Use a IR Repeater (like this) for less than $10 each.

to see if the problem is the remote not being powerful enough.

One way to isolate this as an issue or not, would be to try a phone with IR remote function.
          Such as samsung s4,s5,s6 , note 3 .
Wikipedia seems to have a full list
          https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_devices_with_an_IR_b…

If you have a phone (or watch) with IR blaster, or know someone who has one then could fairly easily check if it is the remote control that is the primary issue, or the receiver.

I'm not sure how effective it would be to clean, wipe over where the sender and receiver is, but I would try it. Probably just any sort of cleaner 1 might use for glass. I would use isopropyl alcohol, just because I have that on hand.

I'm also wondering how indirect the angle becomes, when OP is on ground, and air con is up high, then add that to up/down angle to the side angle , it might be an angle which you generally wouldn't usually expect any remote to work at. ie. If I was at 60 degree angle to side of tv, then stood in front of tv closeup adding 60 degree angle again (off direct line I mean, if you were straight on) , then I wouldn't really expect my tv remote to work well either.
try standing back etc to get a more direct line with less angle I think some tv remotes these days have bluetooth or something also, so we have gotten used to not even having to point at it straight, some even work pointing it in opposite direction. This aircon remote might need to be straight on, to register, which is where close to it (pointing up alot) might not work best.

See if replacing batteries helps, before anything else. Having to click several times before it registers could easily be just batteries are low.

    • Unfortunately this did not fix the issue with the three units.
