Best Bang for Buck Graphics Card Right Now

Hey guys,

I am looking for a graphics card to buy as a present for my brother. My budget is around 300 - 400 dollars, and I don't mind buying used at all.

One of the biggest problems I am facing is finding something between a 1070 or 1080 that doesn't cost 500 dollars( 1070 ti). I can't seem to find any vega 56s at the price range i am comfortable as well, and I'm just completely lost.

I contemplated going straight for the rtx 2060 but honestly that card is just being flogged here at a crazy price and I fear that with 1660ti announcements coming round the corner they might just bolster the price of the second hand 1070s

what are your thoughts?

  • Assuming the target resolution is just 1920 x 1080p and you want 100hz framerate, likely the best bang-for-buck purchase is the RX 580 + 2 free games that come with it.

If it's 1440p I would bite the bullet and go with the newer RTX / GTX card, starting at the 1660 Ti. It should cost you around $400 AUD.

you won't see any old Vega's lying around anymore in the new market, whatever is left on ebay is price-jacked. There wasn't many produced to begin with due to the high cost of HBM memory and AMD never made much profit out of it by gamers, mostly just the miners who were willing to pay a fortune for it in the early days.

His current monitor is 144 1920x1080 and this would be upgrading him from a r9 290.

Ive been poking around some benchmarks and found that the 580 is really similar in performance (+30%) and thats why I thought of getting him something like a 1070

    Easy - second hand GTX1070 for $350-400.

    Hard to beat that performance/$

    • Don't you feel that the 1070 might be a tad lacking in more recent titles? I feel as though to get any decent framerates today you would need a 1080

      • There's not a huge difference between them unless you have a 1440p 144hz+ monitor and play competitive multiplayer FPS.

      • Not at 1080p. GTX Titan is still capable of playing everything at Ultra resolution with no issues. A 1070 is 60% faster card and will be just fine for years to come.

Sign up to OCAU if you looking for 2nd hand parts in the future. People there are always selling cheap, atleast cheaper than ebay.

Just note with OCAU you have to be a member for 90 days to use the classifieds (can't just rock up and use them).

    • Alright thanks for the advice :)
