Citizen Promaster Marine Mechanical Automatic Fugu Limited Edition $260.92 Shipped @ Duty Free Island

80

"Recently Citizen quietly released a new, limited collection of dive watches that build upon the often forgotten NY004 design. Unlike watches like the famed SKX007 from Seiko and Orient’s Mako series, these Citizen automatic divers are often difficult to find in the States and are typically overshadowed by the more readily available Eco-Drive Promaster divers. It’s a shame, since modern NY0040-09EE fans praise the watch for its wearability and the fact that it can trace its roots all the way back to models like the Citizen Parawater of the late 1950s. Now, Citizen is offering an updated line-up known as the Citizen Promaster NY008 Asia Limited Series, which offers a variety of new dial options and capitalizes off the previous collection’s limited military connection." Why is WatchNerd still in the penalty box?

We need someone unbiased to tell us if this watch is crap or not.

    • With no end date for the penalty box, it doesn’t look good for WatchNerd or MathNerd for that matter…

    • I am unbiased, this watch is awesome. Re-release(?) of an older model that I was searching for. This looks even better

      • -1

        This looks even better

        sarcasm ?

        • +1

No actually and I just ordered one.

Not sure if your comment was sarcasm now…hmm

I am unbiased. This watch is crap or not.

In terms of at least @WatchNerd and @PJC, you can put it all down to brigading. They had been doing it for ages, it takes a lot of time for the mods to deal with, and they've obviously called time.

      • +2

I take it you are waiting for a 'real' bargain before you make your first deal post…

        • That's the kind of delusional narrative they engaged in too - reflecting the notion that the only positive contribution one can make to the site is via posts. In fact many members contribute in substantive ways simply through commenting.

Your silence on my claim speaks volumes - you were also often involved in the lynch mob. Well, the mob just got smaller. Must feel a little lonely for you.

You don't write the rules, and nor did they, despite your collective sense of entitlement. Seeking to denigrate other members on the basis of post count is weak and lazy, but go ahead and knock yourself out. Here, have a plus…

Your heroes only had limited expertise anyway. Members like the calm, measured and expert @ilikeit, who i've never observed engage in that kind of crap, is my kind of hero. He may not like it, but i'm happy to declare myself his number one fanboy.

This watch was released a while ago (last year) with 1000 pieces of each model. It was an Asian release model. It is based off the retired NY004 model which was well regarded. Prices of the NY004 have actually appreciated. The nearest competitor would be the Seiko SKX007 and 009 models and is similar in design specification - case design and movement. Like the Seiko it is ISO rated for 200 WR. The bezel is easy to grip and inspired by a puffer fish. I prefer the crown to be on the right of the case, like the SKX, for comfort, not the left like this model.

Unfortunately, like the Seiko, it also has a mineral crystal (superior for diving, inferior for day to day) and an old movement being from the Miyota 8xxx series of movements. This movement is an entry level automatic that features hand winding, but no hacking. This disappoints me (I have a couple of these movements) that they didn't upgrade to the far superior Miyota 9215 which is high beat, has hacking and is more accurate at keeping time.

Considering this is a limited release (not limited edition), I'm surprised it is still in stock.

All things considered, Duty Free Island has raised the price from their deal 5 months ago by approx $13 (currency value at play perhaps): https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/400878

I still think is an Ok price for the watch from a recognized brand with history. It's probably a deal, not a bargain. I've bought from DFI before without issue and they are a well know grey market seller.

      • I want to disagree, mineral glass on my daily seiko fared much better vs my swiss made sapphire casing

        • Opionions vary. The majority of watch nerds disagree hence why sapphire is considered an upgrade.

I've never scratched any of my sapphire crystals or any with sapphire bezel inserts either. My beater Seikos with Hardlex are unmarked too. I have had a quality mineral crystal shatter on me though, but it did stay in one piece. Unhardened mineral are a no go.

  • Did the crime, gotta do the time! But yeah, when is he due out?

  • What is he done, why they banned him?

      • It's like Elvis has died all over again… :(

      • So what did he do to deserve PB?

I have been so tempted to buy this series of Citizen many many times but I think I'd have to sell my SKX007 for it and I dunno if i should….. HMMMM

    • I going to keep my SKX009, but I was tempted too. The movement is a deal breaker. That's a lot for an 8xxx series watch with no hacking.

  • What is the second language in the bilingual day display?

    • Probably Japanese. It was an Asian release model.

  • looks too much like an eco drive and eco drive is dead accurate and i’ve yet to have battery issue after 15 years on one of mine.

think i will wait until seiko release a full size monster watch again with auto …..crazy prices for used ones on ebay.

    • new monsters were released a couple months ago - expensive though usd 600.

  • anyone purchased from these guys can confirm no gst or import charges at the border? ta.

  • Promaster = marina militaire watch of choice = buy

  • lol hacking is a non-issue if u can get the full lume
