December was a big month but looks like Black Friday is the shopping event of the year, beating out Boxing Day.

  • Black Friday had 3,172,826 pageviews, 766,448 sessions (Up 28.86% & 32.89% from 2017)
  • Boxing Day had 2,473,450 pageviews, 682,086 sessions (Up 2.77% & 21.92% from 2017)

Overall we've increased our site traffic but I'll get more into the details with our 2018 Zeitgeist coming soon (see 2017 Zeitgeist)

Unfortunately, we've had some issues with a couple of scammers in classified stemming from users using the same email address/username/password for every website. Please use different passwords for every site you use. Discussion. Check if your email address or password has been comprimised at Have I Been Pwned run by Aussie Troy Hunt.

In the meantime, we are monitoring all classified posts manually to look out for potential scammers, have blocked classifieds from non-members, and we'll have 2 factor authentication available later this year. We're considering what we can do in the future with classifieds whether that's enhancing it or removing it completely.

    Interesting anecdote, thanks.

Scab was banned for half a month and still managed to finish in the top 10 comments.

    • +3

Banned again but this time with no expiry, same for PJC another top commenter. The nerds have also found themselves in the sin bin with no expiry date.

      • +4

After spending a month in the bin, you would think he would have learned his lesson.

And I know PJC was banned, along with WatchNerd. Shame, really.

        • -4

Learned the lesson of not making ozbargain entertaining? This site is losing its best commentators. It's unfathomable how the aforementioned are banned.

          • +1

@kahn: I agree. I don’t know what it was exactly that got Scab banned for good this time, but all the entertaining characters have gone, while the uneducated trolls and misinformation spreading drongos remain.

These guys at least posted deals and contributed to the community. So many other neggers on here with low comments and no posted deals are allowed to downvote deals with invalid negs and run their mouth while valuable contributors are banned only to be replaced by Amazon spammers who dropship from Aliexpress…

Sure, time out these guys if they have done something bad, but to ban most of them was just disheartening. I loved watch deals :(

            #MakeOzBargainGreatAgain

            • @pegaxs: If there is a suggestion of some conspiracy of banning people, I'm just going to call that out respectfully as bullshit. It's nothing personal and we hate banning. Hate it.

Generally speaking as we won't comment on any individual case, we ban a tiny % of people (+ remove only 1% of comments, mostly SPAM) and even so we have numerous warnings, discussions, and temporary bans until they have reached a permanent ban. However, generally speaking, there comes a point where a user is not changing their behaviour whether it's bullying or attacking other users, making inappropriate/racist/sexist comments, spamming, sockpuppting etc. Everyone gets treated equally here. You can post the best deals in the world but if you continually cause harm to the community, then we have a responsibility to act and strive to have a respectful community

On a positive note, we've had members who have been banned in the past and have come back (after contacting us), a bit more mature and realized their mistakes. They've gone on to be contributing members of OzBargain. I guess it takes a little bit of perspective to see things from other's POV.

Happy to chat in general but I'd ask that we respect the user's privacy in these matters.

              • +2

@neil: I would "respectfully" like to say that at no time in my comment did I mention or suggest any conspiracy. I don’t think there is a "conspiracy" but more of an "inconsistency" in the "appearance" of the way penalty boxings are handed down. But, you know, assumption away…

I guess the problem we have, as users (as opposed to admin/mods) of the forum, is that there is no transparency into what goes on in regards to who and why someone gets banned. I totally understand that sometimes there are reasons why this information cannot be shared, but it does make it hard to comprehend at times why some banned users are permanently banned, while other users, who appear to be a lot more openly hostile and make far greater offensive remarks that don’t even seem to have their comments removed.

A big area of contention is the "invalid neg" guidelines, where, unless it's "word for word" off the list, it does not get removed. This is an open form of bullying. These are the type of users that need a shake down. Caged egg and wooden rubber band guns deals are a great reference to the neg voting trolls that seem to be left to roam unchecked. I have given up reporting these users, because all I get in return is "read the guidelines" and when I question that, it's "it's not on the examples list".

I hope that some of the users that have been banned recently do make that impassioned plea and are restored. I certainly let my feeling be known for a few of the recent penalty boxings and how I felt about it personally. I wasn't shilling for them and they don't know that I put myself out there, risking my own account to appeal to the higher authority. Unfortunately, I am not privy to their past indiscretions, but I hope one day that a few of them may be allowed to return. It seems a shame to lose seemingly valuable users over keeping some of the trolls we have now.

So, While I respect your position in the community and the reason you cant give me reasons, just understand that for us, as users, it is hard sometimes to understand why helpful user "xxxxx" was banned, but troll and serial pest "yyyyy" gets left alone. Again, for clarity, this appears to me as "inconsistency" not "conspiracy".

While I love this place that you have all created, I have come to feel that it is slowly becoming a meme of itself. The overwhelming negativity from a lot of other users has become the norm or expected. One trip over to productreview.com.au and read what most people think of the average user here will give you an idea. It has gotten to a point where I don’t want to part with my knowledge on the Automotive sub-forum, because of all the misinformation spreading users that seem to get joy out of distorting the truth or turn it into trolling without any repercussions.

Yes, that's understandable. Unfortunately, when there are issues with a deal/forum post or comment in question it gets unpublished. Moderation discussions are made in private with the user in question. Our penalises are dealt out on a points based system. So for example, a first time sockpuppeting offense would incur a 2 week ban on the store/user. 2 weeks is equivalent to x amount of points. If it happened again, the ban would be 1 month. This applies to all stores/users. The same is true with other infractions. Whether it's x user or y user, the points will always be the same.

While we strive for transparency on OzBargain, when it comes to user issues, we have to keep the issue between staff and the user in question. Unfortunately, when people are seen banned and there is no comments/deal that reveals why, people naturally fill in the blanks.

A reminder of the commenting guidelines. I'm not sure what comments you are referring to but we've addressed your concerns and worked together in TWAM and I encourage you to keep doing so.

That's another discussion but please do make your view known on one of the negative vote discussions. Perhaps this latest one. The reason for the list is for moderators to consistently remove negative votes. We don't want to subject moderators to research and interpretation which ends up being time-consuming and inconsistent. However, we are 100% happy to add to that example list so please do make your suggestions.

I hope that some of the users that have been banned recently do make that impassioned plea and are restored. I certainly let my feeling be known for a few of the recent penalty boxings and how I felt about it personally. Just to be clear, we want people to question us, to ask us the hard questions.

There are really many reasons why people can comment negatively. Sometimes it's nothing but something it's something in their real life that spills onto OzBargain

                  • User was unusually attacking other users. In their real life, was going through messy divorce with custody.
                  • A few users we've spoken to were attacking other users and very negative. They had medical issues which caused them to be in permanent pain spilling over into OzBargain.
                  • Other very troubling users we've found out have had really troubling upbringings.

However, there are also a couple of users in mind. One was making awful racial comments and was a senior executive at a bank. Another make awful religious/racist comments was an immigration lawyer! And then there are the ones who go and threaten staff, fortunately only having to involve the police once.

So it's really hard to know why people act the way they do. Could be nothing, could be something. At the end of the day, we want everyone to act respectfully.

I think we are in agreement there. There is more work to do to make sure people can express their opinions but do so in a respectful manner without attacking others.

                  • +1

@neil: It seems that the accumulation of minor infractions get you enough points to get a perma ban.

These ex-members posted so many deals and have been members for so long that anyone with any sort of quirky character inevitably will be banned.

Imagine if you only got 12 demerit points on your truck license but you never got any back - I don't imagine there would be any professional drivers left on the road.

                    • @iratepirate: Points accumulate but they do expire after a certain amount of time. Quirky characters are not a reason to be banned. There are plenty of quirky characters here who comment with high frequency without resorting to any issues.

I'm hesitant to use hypothetical examples but if you want to compare it to driving, imagine the drivers are being pulled over and ticketed for drunk driving multiple times. OK, first time warning, as the person just had a couple extra after work. OK, next time we're going to suspend your licence for a day, perhaps they have some other plausible excuse. But when it get to the point of the driver going around driving drunk, getting into crashes and hurting others with no sign of stopping, then there is no choice but to permanently take away their drivers licence. Hmm, I like this analogy.

                @neil:

continually cause harm to the community

Okay, so Scab may have been a bit too whimsical for your taste, but it's hard for us to believe that users like MathNerd, PJC, and WatchNerd (all last commented in late December) have caused harm to this community. It doesn't give us much trust in the management of this site to see users like those banned mysteriously.

                • @kahn: @kahn

As I said before, we can't really discuss matters of individuals. In general, comments/deals/forum posts are removed that involve issues with users and we don't make public the reason users are banned. So I understand, without that information, you may fill in the gaps with what you think may happen. Users will only get permanently banned after numerous interactions.

In the last 24 hours, I see 9 penalties handed out.

                  • 3 Personal Attack Warnings
                  • 4 Permanent Bans for Spamming
                  • 1 Permanent Ban for a Ghost Account
                  • 1 Temporary Ban for Trolling

When we do warn or ban, we PM the user with a link to the guidelines as well as the comment/deal/forum thread in question.

For transparency, I'll see if I can get a number of banned accounts in our future stats posts to give a clearer picture and transparency.

                  • @neil: Wish I could +1 some of your comments here neil. Thanks for the comprehensive and intelligent replies

                • @kahn: Wait - Scab, WatchNerd & PJC all got banned?! There's only a handful of users on here that I truly know and relate to and they are absolutely in the top 5. Obviously I don't have anywhere near the visibility that mods do but I'd be genuinely surprised to see them posting content worth a permaban. This place is as much of a community forum as it is a bargain repository and their absence lessens my enjoyment immensely :(

                  • @Hinee: Well you haven't been paying close enough attention. Certainly @WatchNerd and @PJC had been breaching boundaries for months and clearly assumed they were untouchable given their post count. They were wrong, and the reason they were wrong is their conduct contributed a toxic dimension to the community, and that's not much of a community. Don't know so much about @Scab, but 90% of his comments were pointless.

                    • @[Deactivated]: I guess I haven't then. All the offending posts must have been deleted too because I couldn't find anything untowards in the scroll I did through their profiles.

                      • @Hinee: Let's finish this discussion. We can't discuss individual cases and it's not appropriate to discuss other members especially if they are banned.

                        • @neil: Case closed - I am lacking of facts. Keep up the good work neil

                        • -1

@neil: Fair enough. I've just got a bit of an issue with the post-banning beatification that's been going on.

                          • @[Deactivated]: You assume you are the innocent one and have done nothing to contribute?

                            • @nocure: While i'd love to take credit, i was on an extended involuntary holiday at the time.

Missed this post when first posted, time to catch up on the top positive/negative/controversial comments.

I read Ozbargain negative reviews on Product Review and they seem written by the same person in my opinion, use of the same terms over and over (toxic community) and same concepts repeated.

    • -3

Use of the term 'over and over' is repetitive. I give your comment a negative review.

      • it’s not repetitive, with just one over the sentence would not make sense. Cheers

        • -1

You started that sentence with a lower case letter. I give your comment a negative vote.

    • +1

I used to keep track and sometimes they'd appear right after a store rep tried to spam here and have a meltdown over the backlash.

As clear says, the timing of comments and complaints can sometimes be identified to who the store or user was on OzBargain. People keep writing the same talking points because unlike a restaurant or a product, it's hard to put in words a complaint about a forum website. I think we're the only website forum on the Product Review platform. Not sure why as Whirlpool is big but isn't listed.

      • Reviews by reps generally involve them posting some product that is either not popular, not a good price or both. These reps have probably only experienced the Facebook platform and haven't received any critical feedback before. People give their feedback, as they should, and they perceive this as toxic or bullying.

Some people have a difficult understanding the difference between critical feedback whether given politely or rudely AND bullying/personal attacks. Criticising/praising a product or service and the price points is literally what this site is about. Criticising people is not.

      • Reviews complaining about too many rules and sockpuppeting are reps who have sockpuppeting either by pretending they are customers or getting employees to vote up the deals. Again OzBargain is unique in the way we handle transparency. Facebook, Instagram whatever don't care if all of your upvotes or comments are related persons to the business. Google Reviews also has this problem but I believe they do try to tackle it.

      e.g. this review:

Tried using Bargain for my business to promote a sale. Apparently because i didn't receive any likes from my post i was banned from posting for 1 month as they said it wasn't a good enough bargain for them. If a High Adjustable desk with 10 years warranty 1800mm long under $600 is not a good deal then i dont know what is these days.
      Do not use this site

      LOL!

Some of them are just ridiculous:

Factual comments are got rid of these days by allegedly bots used on the site to keep order. Bot suspensions are non appealable if you have ever been deemed to be attacking someone else.

Bots removing factual comments? Sorry, we have trouble tackling duplicate deals, so we're definitely not at the point where we have AI bots monitoring whether comments are factual or not.

      and goes on:

Attacking someone who has attacked you personally is an offence because ozbargain allows you no defence if you are abused.

The real reason the person is upset. Seems they got banned for "defending themselves" by attacking another member.

and again of the deep end:

The decisions made on the site are made in accordance with advertisers and companies but well hidden. It has become over time a dishonest and abusive site promoting sales and companies depending on payments, at the expense of basic honesty.

      More false accusations.

it is also used to promote political agendas and you can also expect bans for disagreeing with those. In short its a typical trumpette site full of fake sales and fake comments.

Apparently some political agenda? and now pulls out the "Trump" card. Fake!

      and then to finish:

edit I was banned for writing this review, so that was interesting because they must have got the ip from here

Apparently we're so evil that we've hacked into ProductReview OR PR's decided to breach privacy laws and send IP addresses to us. And of course have banned them again!

      • +1

It’s funny how they tried to sell the desk even through Product Review

      • +1

        Product review is a joke.

But from time to time store reps get targeted by multiple passive aggressive comments. I think we could do better to tone things down a bit more and use the report button more. (Sorry I know its more work for you)

        • Agreed. Giving critical feedback is fine but just being rude is not necessary. Please do report any comments you see.
