Updates, Top Deals, Comments, Forum Posts, Members of The Month + Other Stats [January 2018]

  • January, February and March are usually slow months as we recover from the Christmas shopping season of November & December. If you're unsure of what you want to buy, check out our What to Buy Guides which we are continuing to add and update.

  • Browser stats have always been fairly stable with Chrome increasing slightly every month. However in January, Chrome dropped 12% down to 46.00% and Safari up 11% to 38.22%. That's a huge monthly change that I've never seen and can't explain. Did everyone get iPhones for Christmas?

  • Some things in the queue for OzBargain: a new front page algorithm that takes into account a number of factors including busyness of the site. Business accounts separate from personal accounts (similar somewhat to how Facebook handles it). Both of these were from user suggestions so please if you have any feedback or suggestions, please let us know in the forums.

  • Oh and yes I'm still compiling the 2017 yearly stats. Here is a cool graph of # of deals posted per store.

graph

Site Updates of Interest (Not a full list)

  • Infinite Scrolling on New Deals page. Discussion
  • Add confirmation pop-up for username changes
  • Closed forum threads now have a [x] next to the listing
  • Showing both Related Stores when a deal is linked to a sub-store on a market place domain. (e.g. Airfare booking sites + airline)
  • eBay deals that require the use of a discount coupon code which is not yet active can only be posted on the day that coupon becomes active. Details
  • Insufficient quantity deals will now be merged to dedicated forum threads where (instead of being unpublished completely). Details

    Did everyone get iPhones for Christmas?

    Some certainly did (and tried to sell them as well).

    Thanks for the stats.

  • -6

    TL;DR

  • I see I wasn't the only one eagerly waiting for a good Switch deal :) Ended up finding one; Neon Switch + Just Dance 2018 for $469 from EBGames (eBay), -10% from the PRONTO code, -$35 for trading Just Dance in ($31 without my EBWorld bonus), -$5 from Cash Rewards = ~$390 + shipping.

    • I'm still waiting, becoming increasingly impatient as less games seem available on the 3DS

  • +3

    It would be nice if top comment of the month got a badge.

      Or something useful like a free massage.

    I made the list, does that mean I'll be promoted to power user?

    So excited, if I do I'm going to change my name to Scab Power.

    • No. Being on any of the lists above does not / will not affect your chances of becoming a power user.

      • +2

        Could you please lobby for me, Scrimshaw?

    thanks for the stats.
    Always interesting
    Can you post a bigger version of graph please? Thanks! :)

    • +1

      The bigger version will be out when the yearly stats are done…hopefully soon.

      • +1

        cool. will look forward to it.
        (I probably need new glasses haha)

  • Title should be renamed to Hall Of Spam

    Quantity > Quality

    Why?

    • Because we've dethroned jv in the top 10 comments?

      • it's a serious question.

      • +2

        And their comments are more entertaining and informative.

        • -1

          Exactly my point, quality > quantity seems right.

        • +3

          @BrodenIt:

          • Quantity: Yes, you are January and this month's (696 so far) Hall of Spammer. Special mention of this deal thread.

          • Quality: I'd say quality would perhaps be measured better with Top 10 positively voted comments however most of the top 10 are 1st comments to very active deals/threads, so perhaps would have to exclude 1st comments.

        • -1

          @neil:

          Thanks for the honourable mention, do I get a badge? I was talking about deal posts, just tellin. I've never asked to be included in this, You can replace my spot with savas, i don't mind. I prefer a unbiased community over favouritism, I'm sure orpheus us will agree with my on this. For example, I got sent to the Penalty box for saying "Stop being a douche" how's it any different to "stop it, you're looking like a idiot"?

        • +1

          @neil: hi Neil, how do I become a poweruser? I don't know what that entails but I like the idea of having 'power'.

        • +3
        • @neil: Interesting trend I noticed. None of them are Store Reps. Is that to prevent a conflict of interest or just more of a coincidence since most reps are less engaging?

        • @Clear:

          Not sure I understand the question. What stat are we referring to?

        • @neil: Power users.

        • +1

          @Clear:

          Oh right. Yeah, no reps. There definitely are a couple of reps who would be good power users but better not as would probably create some conflicts of interest.

        • +2

          @neil: I thought that would be the case.

          Hmm I wonder which reps would be a good pick (not me).

        • +1

          @neil:
          Who chooses? Mods or Scotty?

        • +2

          @BrodenIt:

          We discuss as a group like any other moderation decision.

          99% of what moderators do is editing deals consisting of fixing titles (no store, missing price, non-sensical stuff), descriptions, tagging the deal (making sure the product is set on each deal) and removing duplicates. So really our roles are more like librarians or subeditors. So when we notice others who also share the passion of improving the community, we look to make them power users. They are super useful especially on the weekends or middle of the night when there aren't many mods available. And of course, some power users turn into moderators and then some into staff.

        • +1

          @neil:
          I see, thanks for taking the time to write that.

    • +4

      At the bottom line, only numbers count.

      Well that's what I'm lead to believe with the financial sector…

      • I like number theory too.
