Top Deals, Comments, Forum Posts, Members of The Month and Other Stats for July 2015

It has been a month of arse and culture with some of our users started negotiating directly with the merchants to get them to offer something exclusive to our community. See this forum topic for more discussions.

We also discovered that the biggest comp win ever on OzBargain went unreported..at least officially. Darron65 won a $65,000 Walkinshaw supercharged Commodore. Remember to click Mark Entered and if you win, the Won button.

We had a request for a "changelog" of things added/fixed on OzBargain. While most of the changes are internal and wouldn't makes sense (some don't even make sense to me), here's a short list of some changes from the past month:

  • Competition
    • Always allow users to mark comp wins if commenting is open, and allow commenting to be automatically re-opened within 60 days after close. Extended deadline for auto-commenting closing for comps.
    • Add filters on competition main page and 'not entered' page.
    • Allow users to hide comps from 'not entered' comp listing page.
    • Altdomain should not be overwritten in comp submission form if it has already been populated.
    • Restore comp search box
  • TWAM
    • Resolved button. (Very useful for us!)
  • Front Page
    • Random Discussion post is now promoted on the front page & Forums menu. (See the right, middle of the front page)
  • Deals
    • Per-node configurable option for OP-editing to be long-expiry (This allows us to set posts to be editable or lock the edits. By default, editing is locked after a couple of weeks, so this allows users to continue to edit deals. Useful for long running deals.)
    • Neg voters need to have at least one published comment.
    • Auto mark deals and comps as referrer if OP included a third party site link and is a rep for that site (e.g. blogs, search sites like FashionLane).
  • Private Messaging
    • Private msg email notification should link to latest message.
    • Add last page link to privatemsg's pager(for those who have multiple pages of PMs with friends).
  • Misc
    • Mark notification item as read after clicking on Desktop notification popup
    • Parse Aliexpress top-rated sellers and feedback score (Weeding out posts from potentially dodgy sellers. See here)
    • Change topdaily deals min votes from 50 to 75 (Votes that hit 75 votes get autoposted to Facebook & Google +.)

A couple of notes of some cool features coming along. Product reviews/ratings from Amazon. Sortable tables which should be useful for the grocery posts. We're also working on a bunch of things to our New Zealand site, Choice Cheapies. I'm hoping to push out an OzBargain comp shortly as well as a very cool story/infographic that hopefully will be picked up by the media (lots of manual data collection).

July 2015

These are the winners for July 2015:

  • fergo747 — it was his very first deal shared on OzBargain (despite joined almost 3 years ago), and it was a winner! $24.50 Chromecast from Officeworks as well as their eBay store. Who else hasn't got one?! It was also the fastest deal reaching +100 votes so far — took 16 minutes and 2 seconds.

  • tightarse — yes our regular here has done it again, and this time he posted the most number of deals in July (65), with vote average of +134. Well done!

  • nmat — for posting the most popular competition last month, win a ŠKODA Octavia from SBS. 139 people have entered and interestingly even more than winning $40k from Honda (only 120 entered). S.Butler of 3216 won it — an OzBargainer?

  • JSQUARED — JSQUARED still the "TA of comps" on OzBargain, posting 69 competitions last month. Besides the $40k from Honda, also check out some instant wins from Foxtel and McDonald's.

  • Kewok — for posting the most popular freebie, 6 months free Presto. Not sure anyone would pay for Presto (SD content only & crappy app), but for free for 6 months? Why not.

Congratulations to all the winners!

Lol a comment in top 10 voted and 1 in bottom 10 voted, can't please them all! And apparently I need to be busier to comment more than jv!

    Cheers Neil!

    • +8

That equates to jv roughly making 1.2% of the comments in July and you .9%.

Trivia: Who has written more jv on OzBargain or Jules Verne in his written works?

I don't know the answer but just something to ponder.

P.S. The Jules Verne Collection is free on Amazon UK.

      • The Jules Verne extensive commentary collection is free on ozbargain.com.au

      • +2

Jules Verne is not as bold as jv.

      • +1

Neil have you ever looked at the average vote count over the years? Seems that a vote >100 is becoming 'easier' to get than a few years ago. I'd just be curious how it graphed out :)

        • +2

Yep, it's in the yearly stats post:

          graph

Year Deals not reaching Front Page Front Page Deals Vote Average
          2011 11590 3641 16
          2012 15148 3851 16.31
          2013 21043 5084 17.63
          2014 22975 5989 20.94

I'll pull some stats for +50 and +100.

        • +1

          OK, here ya go:

Year Deals (50+ votes) Deals (100+ votes) Vote Average
          2011 1222 247 16
          2012 1599 421 16.31
          2013 2639 689 17.63
          2014 3497 1121 20.94
          2015 2320 767 23.99

          chart

Note that the 2015 figure in the chart is estimated by dividing by .6, as we are 60% through with the year.

        • @neil:

Woah definite increase :) I take it there's no way of getting figures earlier than 2011?

        • +1

          @Spackbace:

Yes, it's just a matter of me going back to the DB and running queries but I think we've established a data trend with the 4.5 years of data.

Part of the reason we moved up the auto-posting to FB & Twitter, G+ from 50 to 75 was simply too many deals posted on FB (and clogging our automated post maker).

        • @neil:

does this correspond to increase in number of posts made and number of active members.

        • +1

          @jubba:

I'm sure a statistician would be better to analyse this. Basically, a deal that receives 90 votes doesn't necessarily mean it's better than a deal that received 60 votes.

The top deal on HotUKDeals this week hit 1608 votes and a featured deal on their frontpage has over 14,000 votes.

I'd say the more important number is the frontpage which is currently at 20. That current number seems to be the sweet spot to keep about 2 days worth of deals visible so that's what we really need to monitor.

  • Add last page link to privatemsg's pager(for those who have multiple pages of PMs with friends).

Thanks so much for this! (and everything else) <3

  • Nice work, always interesting to look at the numbers

  • My goal is to one day be on this page (at the top, that is).

You want your name where neil's is? (making the post.) High ambitions indeed! =)

        • I'm fairly certain I've only been a power user for 3/4 weeks of the month too and I'm very slack at OzBargaining on weekends. Even as a top 10 commenter, I have yet to earn the Chatty badge!
I just edited this post too (fixed a wiki link), but that likely doesn't even count towards this month's stats. ;)

  • Saw myself at 10 for top commenters and was like meh, but then number 3 for Most Front-Page Deals posted by Store Reps <:

  • +1

so what prizes do these guys win for being the top posters on this site?

    • +2

Currently $100 Paypal or Gift Card. See here.

  • wow, never knew ozb does these monthly round ups.

    Nice!!

Should put this as a link first week of every month somewhere on the front page to get more people viewing.
