Comments / Feedback / Suggestions Thread

I've created this thread for general day-to-day comments/feedback/suggestions, because I think it's better then having to make a new thread every time you have got something little to ask/say.

      • Thanks Neil. Is it hard to add the feature? How about adding the tag or category filter to the /deals/popular page?

  • May I suggest something for deal pages?

Can the category and label be distinguished by a different icon. It seems like a logical thing to do:

EG: http://i.imgur.com/BmBS36n.png?1 —> The first entry is a category and should be a different icon. The rest are tags and their icons are OK.

    Thanks

  • Would it be possible to somehow make the poster of a deal stand out in the comments, similar to reddit?

    • +1

Hmm, they already do stand out - the OP's comments are surrounded by a box.

        I'm retarded

We all have those days. :)

Is it possible to have different colours on the title?
I tend to find deals from Amazon and I think some people really dislike the fact that USD is not distinguishable from AUD, so if we can use different colours i.e. "USD$xx.xx" shows up as different colour from "$xx.xx", I think it would be easier for people.

    • ^ this!

    • Agree!

  • I'm running the app on an iPhone 5 with the latest iOS, and run into the below issues

    1. When I go to the WEB tab (bottom right), I then go to the 3 lines icon (top lef). If I do a search or browse and go into any post then there is no option to GO BACK. I instead have to click on the "3 lines" and start all over again.
    2. Accessing web links from within The app sees my sessions often hang. There is a 50/50 chance as to wether The links works, or i have to start again. I now find myself selecting and holding the link, copying the address, and then leaving the app and opening a safari session , and then pasting the link to then access the page.
    • OzBargain doesn't have an app. Any OzBargain app in iTunes store/Google Play etc is developed by a third party, so you would need to contact the developer directly.

I would highly recommend you use the mobile site in Safari instead, I think you'll find it a lot more functional and reliable.

      • Thanks. That was a simple answer and all I required.
Although… A genuine app would be great :)

  • The way the deal tags work, if there's an associated product, it loses the deal tag due to showing on the right-hand pane. But on the mobile site there's nothing shown anyway. Suggestion would be to still keep the product tag there across the site (desktop & mobile), or somehow having it show on just the mobile site. Or some other way of showing the product on the mobile site, without being too intrusive (like another line underneath the deal tags)

  • Is it possible to "follow" a user? By this I mean get an email notification if a specific ozbargain member posts a new deal or a forum topic.

Some members only post deals or forums from time to time but when they do, the posts and comments are usually very interesting to read. Sometimes members will take a break from OzBargain and then decide to come back later. An email notification of when they started posting again would be very useful. I sometimes take a couple of days before I come back to read posts I have been following so an email about a member I am interested in would be very useful and would mean I'd come back more often. The notification would have to be based on the members number rather than their user id as it's possible to change the user name and avatar.

    • User's profile page usually gives you a broad overview on the deals, forum topics and comments recently posted. As of this "stalking feature" I think the usefulness might be limited.

  • If a mod edits a comment (not a post), does it display "edited by x"?

I noticed one of my sentences changed, or i think it changed…

    • If a mod edits a comment (not a post), does it display "edited by x"?

      No.

If we need to edit a comment, which is fairly rare if the OP didn't request it, then we will put Mod: Edited for X reason. I can double check if you let me know which comment.

      • Thanks neil, got a message from hazma, it's all sorted.

Was just questioning my own sanity….

  • Not sure if this is browser specific of deliberately coded but is there a reason behind the "voucher code" section automatically highlighting the entire field when only a portion is selected? Can be a pain when there are multiple coupon codes.

For example - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/193951, selecting/highlighting ONE coupon code results in the entire line being highlighted.
There are more and more examples of stacked coupon codes (in the true ozbargain spirit) and this can be frustrating when codes are long or complex but still have to be entered individually.

Happens for me on both IE and Chrome.

    • It was designed to copy and paste coupon code. The problem is actually in our inability to put multiple coupon codes in that field and sometimes people just put arbitrary text in there.

We'll eventually fix the multiple coupon code issues.

  • is it possible to add something to remove post/thread from bookmark list without the need to go in the post and uncheck it?

sorry if there is a way that I dont know about

  • May a suggest for a more detailed 'Last login' time in iterations of minutes hours, weeks or in some cases years. Something like '7 hours ago' and '1 week ago' for example.

    Cheers

    • I have found that it does have it but it's only when you go into the users detailed information. Could it be possible to have it on the users account overview?

  • Hey Mods. Is there a way to find all AmEx current deals? It would be great if we could have 1 place where we can see all current offers that are still live :)

    • Hey Trent86,

I think the best solution is just to search by the American Express tag where they will all be listed (amongst some credit card offers). Alternatively I'd use this Amex link and scroll down, should have most if not all there.

      • Lol know what I was doing, searching Amex, not American express, was wondering why it wasn't showing up. Well that's sorted. Thanks

        • Ah yeah, the 'Amex' tag is an alias of 'American Express' so they will all show there. No probs.

    • Just to follow this up.

We have grouped amexconnect.com.au amexnetwork.com.au and americanexpress.com deals all into the 1 americanexpress.com store, so all the deals should be in 1 place now. Also just 1 store for users to subscribe to.

      Thanks

  • Cheers for implementing the new last login. There seems to be a minor issue, instead of saying last signed in for online users, could it say online now instead? It seems to be refreshing every time you visit a new page. It's very confusing when I see Last login 3 seconds ago when I actually hopped on 10 minutes ago.

    • That's fixed now.

  • I probably should or could have posted this here, but anyways:

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/196825?page=2#comment-2799…

    Mods? Thoughts?

(sorry to raise such a trivial matter) >_< lol

    • Yes wiki is a mess and potentially problematic —

      • People changing each other's order
      • People changing each other's referral code (!!)
      • People using different markups and formats

For sites that support standard URL format for referrals we'll use the user-referral system however in the case of MEBank it's not really possible.

Could we have some sort of rules or guidelines on deals from Aliexpress? We have rules on eBay deals, but there seems to be none for the Aliexpress deals. As far as I see, many people tend to self-regulate, most of the deals that get posted are by reputable (at least by their feedback level, which is based on number of 4~5 star feedbacks on their deals) sellers. That being said, wouldn't it be better to have some rules on what sellers are allowed on Ozbargain? Even though not many people are affected, there was a recent case where the Aliexpress froze one of the deals that was posted here.

    • Good suggestion. We'll look into it and discuss some guidelines.

It's a bit more complicated than eBay. None of the AliExpress deals posted here have been by a Top Rated Seller, something that we require for eBay deals. As for feedback, this deal was removed for being counterfeit, yet their feedback is 100% based on 956 reviews.

      • I guess it would be hard to filter every possible counterfeit and fraudulent deals from Aliexpress by the feedback, but I personally think the feedbacks do reflect higher chance of the deal being a deal. I've heard from other forum that I go to that I should buy from someone who has at least 3 diamonds for the feedback and never get anything that has a reputation for counterfeits (i.e. Xiaomi goods, USB sticks) on Aliexpress. I am not sure how valid that advice is, but I think I've had relatively decent luck so far with Aliexpress.

I guess it would be hard to make a guidelines for posting deals from Aliexpress, but I think having some guideline is better than having none. It would probably end up being convoluted, but something like feedback level above certain amount would stop some potential mishaps. It's not perfect, but I think it gives a starting point for the guideline.

        • An update to Aliexpress.

We've researched and discussed the issue quite intensively. There doesn't seem to be any good metric based on feedback to weed out dodgy sellers however we have implemented the following and will see what the OzBargainer's feedback is:

Aliexpress store ban for reps has been removed. The criteria for posts are:

          • No overseas users
          • Rep posts must be from top rated seller
          • Non-rep posts must have feedback score >= 80% and number of feedback >= 500
  • is there a way of making links on this site open to a new browser Tab by default. I dont want that function via my browser, just for this site.

    • Go to your Settings page, and there's a checkbox:

      Deals open in new window

Tick that, and the main deal links will open in a new window/tab. Links inside the deal content & comments will remain opening in the same window however, and you'll still need to use your browser feature to open it.

      • thanks, just what I was after.

        cheers,

      • didnt read your comment correctly - ignore this reply.

    • You can also mouse wheel click almost any link on the internet and it will open it in a new tab (at least for google chrome)

  • Can the search alerts notify you on the bell thing? It's a nice touch that you can see replies from the bell icon but it'd help also if search alerts you create can also be seen on it. I used some bogus email when signing up so emailing me these notifications doesn't help. I'd much prefer seeing it in that notification box.

    • Any thoughts? I'd rather check the notification bell than get multiple emails.

      • It's possible — we are still working on some unification between onsite notification & email notification so for those that you choose to subscribe to email you might be able to choose between email or bell.

  • Would love to see a way that any deals from overseas equivilants e.g. www.hotukdeals.com that qualified for use by ozbargainers were somehow automatically posted here :)

    • There are members who are subscribed to overseas sites who will post deals found on there. Unfortunately with the tanking exchange rate, UK deals aren't as popular anymore.

If you accidentally Neg a comment then revoke the Neg you can't vote Positively on that comment. Can we add a short timer (ie 60 seconds) for re-voting?

    • Yeah. Often requested feature although implementation is not that straight-forward. It's already on our to-do list.

      • I'm guessing the code checks if you've already voted on a comment before re-voting? I suppose you would need to capture the timing of the events too which would be annoying.

  • How do I automatically view all the comments with negative scores instead of having to click the + button for each comment?

    • The yellow bar underneath that says

[x ] Hidden | Mark All Read | Top Comments

Click on Hidden so it's now [ x] Hidden — it would then show all the hidden comments (due to low threshold) by default.

  • Alongside the "Cashback Offers" box, would it be possible (or worthwhile) to include whether a retailer can be accessed through the qantas mall or velocity estore (or other frequent flyer malls)? Some users may not think it's worthwhile but it's all dependent on how much you value FF points.

    • For Qantas and Velocity —> we did have plans to support them however unlike CashRewards, PricePal and Qwibble, they do not support any API for us to retrieve the cashback rates.

      • Cool, thanks for the reply scotty.

        • If you're working on this feature, please consider including the flybuys estore.

  • For deals marked as a duplicate, can we get a link to the original? Hyperlink to the original just like in the forum posts?

    • All removed duplicates should be linked to the original.

      • +1

Most are yes but it's not obvious until you hover over the word duplicate, could it perhaps be made to stand out by being blue or underlined or by having it appear as an internal link with the arrow etc without being moused over?

It's probably even less obvious on mobile devices as there's no hover in most cases but I haven't checked.

        • This has also caught me out. The duplicate link is not obvious on some devices.

  • Is there a way around the 20 page limit for previous deals?

    • Use the search?

      • nah i've been overseas for a week and i like to browse.. i've got my settings to show all deals.. so yeah the 20 pages only cover the last 4 days or so

  • Suggestion. Future deals have a blue box next to the date i.e. "In 5 days"

Perhaps that could be renamed to "Starts in 5 days"

  • Can we have a function that allows you to set your profile to automatically send you emails when deals go viral? e.g. hit more than 50 votes in 15-30mins?

    I don't want to miss any deals :( e.g. telstra $45 plan

    • You can subscribe to front-page deals. Go to your subscriptions page and under "events". You'll get an email notification as soon as a deal hits front page (currently 20 votes).

      • Thanks Scotty! Didn't know that already existed!

As per this thread, what if the Coles/Woolworths half price deals posts were tagged with a special tag, like 'Coles50%' and 'WW50%' for example. Would make it very easy to rss to these posts in particular

  • This one has been driving me crazy for some time. As hard as it is to believe, there are some days where I can't be continually scanning over the new deals page and I'll do it at the end of the day which results in my browsing through several pages of new deals. When finishing browsing through in the default reverse chronological order, it would be great to be able to press a page 1 button to go back to the beginning, the same way the UI for deal comments or forum posts work. I hate this inconsistency in UI and must be just so well trained that I need the page 1 button. Could you make this change?

    • Or just click on deals? Or deals -> new deals?

And there are page numbers, they're just down the bottom of the list…

      • +1

I just click on the OzBargain logo at the top left. Nice and large.

      • I do that, mentally though I am in page navigation mode and it would be good to just press one again.

The page numbers "move" across as you page so you lose page one by about page four or five.

This is different from comments/forums which leaves the page one button on screen and uses ellipsis to indicate a gap between page one and the current page.

        • The page numbers "move" across as you page so you lose page one by about page four or five.

Ah yep got ya. I guess rather than a number 1, it could have like a << button?

        • @Spackbace: Yep that too however we already have "1" button in the comments pages presentation, just take a look below :-)

I know its stupid but its a little inconsistency for my usage style :-)

    • You might find using an RSS feed reader such as Feedly a great way to subscribe to new deals. It's cross-platform and you can save, mark unread etc not only for OzBargain but other sites that you can subscribe to. I rarely check websites for new content anymore as Feedly shows me the relevant information I need.

  • There seems to be an error on the mobile site. When you comment on a deal with a large character count like Xiaomi Powerbank 10000mAh (US$13.55~AU$17.56)/10400mAh(US$13.59~AU$17.57) Delivered @ Gearbest, a 'glitch' occurs and the deal text seems to take up the screen and you cannot click on the 'user reply' number.

  • Can we maybe have a sub-category in Messages for System Messages? Could be a different tab up the top. Just to keep messages from System (so deal reports) away from the others?

    • The system messages will auto delete themselves after x amount of weeks so it won't clog up your inbox long term. You probably report more issues than most members so it might be a fairly unique issue, but we'll discuss this further. Just to get some general feedback, would you rather not receive report replies for 'every day' reports such as duplicate posts removed or expired deals marked as expired? We have been trying to reply to most reports when appropriate so users know what happened to that deal they reported (even if it's the expected result - just for the sake of better communication and so they know it's actioned) but could cut down on that for very obvious things.

      • Yeah I dunno why some get a msg and some get just a pop-up. Thing is though I don't think a msg is necessary with 'thanks' :P maybe just a msg if needed (as in just to explain why the report was wrong or something), otherwise just a pop-up :)

        I can't be 1 of the main reporters…! Really?

        • Yeah good point, now that we have the notification system we probably want to cut down the messages, hadn't thought of that - will do.

Well 99% of members either don't report things at all or only once in a blue moon, there aren't many regular reporters that would report something most days (even once a day on average). We certainly appreciate those members that do report things as they see them, generally members report things very quickly indeed. We have noticed a lot of members write comments about something wrong with a deal (especially when a deal has expired or sold out down the track as it's not a deal many users are looking at any longer) and have wondered how we can encourage those members to report the issues so we are aware and can resolve it - sometimes days can past in between members commenting on a post about a deal issue (eg deal has expired) and someone reporting it.

  • Any way of scrapping the duplicate checking on forum post titles? I doubt there's many issues with duplicates, nor is anyone going to go back and post on an old thread.

    • I think the idea there is that members generally post forum posts for assistance, the duplicate check may find a forum topic for the same issue that they can find the answer within or add to the discussion rather than starting a new forum topic (rather than having 12 posts over 12 months asking the same question, this can cut that down at least a little).
Users also posting about certain events/news stories may also find it has already been posted due to the duplicate checker.

  • We need a place to put general sales and coupons, that is seperate from the regular deal stream.
For example, I have this coupon I got from target
    http://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/24621/32227/img_2015072…

I could post it as a deal, but either it would get down voted for having no specific bargains, or it would more likely get passed by and forgotten. These types of things are near useless, but sometimes you just find something you like and will buy regardless. In those times, it would be nice to be able to lookup the store on ozbargain, and see any active coupon codes.

Longer term this could pave the way for a browser addon to automatically check for coupons when you shop online.

  • for some time I've wished you could limit searches for just terms in the title of deals. randomly i realised you can do this with twitter, as every deal is tweeted by @ozbargain. just use the syntax from:@ozbargain term and select 'live', and it will show every deal with that term in the title by date. for example from:@ozbargain lg led. if you search that by date on here, it comes up with everything with it in the description as well..

    • Add "option:titleonly" to your search terms. For example, search all the "price error" in forums:

      • thanks. did you just make that?

        • That was implemented a few months ago. Can't find the announcement (if there's any in the first place).

  • A subforum specifically for competition related discussion could be worth exploring

    • I guess the thinking is any comments about a specific comp should be done in that specific comp post. However, perhaps for all other competitions or general discussion we can have a competition discussion post in General Discussion? It definitely would be cool to talk about tips, tricks and comp wins.

  • Store Rep Loophole?
Posts like this, in my opinion, are exploiting a store rep posting limit loophole.
Sometimes up to 3 posts a day from the same store appear with these special codes. A rep, posting on their own, can't do that.
Not that I'm against these great deals in any way, but are the posts really acceptable?

    • I guess the question would be is there a difference between a regular user finding a good deal on a retailer site versus a regular user asking the retailer for a deal that they can post?

  • What about including the price as a separate field in deal submissions? Obviously some prices do have "hooks" and catches (e.g. CostCo membership), but this could be flagged too.
The whole point of this, is to improve the deal notification system. So you can configure an alert when an item is available for less than $X. e.g. If Xbox One deal is posted for less than $400 then an alert is generated.

There are quite a few other sites that already do this (e.g. Adioso.com), so it would be worthwhile considering.

  • 'Related Store' added on Groupon/Scoopon deals (just not when under the Goods section) - I know the deals get tagged with the company generally, but this will make it easier when searching through the store, or those that have subscribed to the stores

    • So case in point, I could add related store Pastacup.com.au to this deal :)

      • Thanks for the suggestion Spackbace. After discussions with mods we have implemented this now.

Basically we can tick a checkbox on our end on any store domain to show the alternative domain field. When posting a deal for Groupon/Scoopon etc the system will now show the optional alternative domain field. Using your example you could enter pastacup.com.au and the deal will show in both https://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals/scoopon.com.au and https://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals/pastacup.com.au (but still retrieve cashback/referral information when applicable from the main URL - Scoopon.com.au)

Basically this is what we do with eBay deals already.

For now I have set the alternative domain field on Scoopon, Groupon, Living Social and Our Deal. We can add it to other sites as required though.

        Thanks
