Comments / Feedback / Suggestions Thread

I've created this thread for general day-to-day comments/feedback/suggestions, because I think it's better then having to make a new thread every time you have got something little to ask/say.

closed Comments

        • Cool cheers :)

  • May have been posted , or I've missed that it has been , multi field search . e.g. search by poster and product and/ or company.

    E.g. altomic , meritline

  • A suggestion I have is to make links always open in a new tab. That is links to deals that are posted.
It'd be useful so you can still scroll through the comments or make sure you enter the code correctly.

    Just a thought!

    • Go to

      My Account - Edit

      Check the box for:

      Deals open in new window
Whether to open the deal in a new browser window/tab.

    • I have asked that.
the option just makes the deal itself (when you click the picture) open in a new tab, all other links stay on the same tab unfortunately.

  • On the Daily Entry competitions page can we have an option to hide closed competitions?

    • Yeah we thought that would be handy for the comp pages. It's on our to do list to add a filter to show/hide expired comps, was told it should be possible.

      Thanks

      • Cool, thanks hamza :)

    • Just a heads up that the new filter option for closed comps will not be on the daily entry competitions page, but on the main comps page, where you can already filter by daily entry comps (entry limit = once per day). Will update here when it's rolled out.

  • Suggestion - a "jump to last post" button for forum topics & user comments page, similar to whirlpool

    • +2

also like whirlpool, a printable/archive format to show all comments on one single scrollable page

  • Any chance on finally fixing the phat phingers discrimination, on mobile?
Even on a phablet, the difference in a Pos/Neg vote is millimetres.

If that won't be changed - At least allow vote-revision, not-just revoke.
It's possible to edit posts, but not votes. Time-limit is perfectly acceptable IMO.

I neg, by mistake… best I can do is revoke. They never get the Pos they deserve.

    Thanks.

  • Unable to remove bookmark :(

I bookmarked a deal and it subsequently got removed/deleted. Now I've got an unpublished deal in my bookmarked folders I am unable to remove.

Any way other way to get rid of the unpublished deal from my folders other than visiting the deal and unticking bookmark which is not possible anymore?

    • Sorry not currently possible. However it's indeed a usability problem and we shall fix it.

  • Suggestion: There are lots of free events out there such as professional development talks, cultural events, music gigs, etc. I wouldn't really associate them as tangible item deals but I assume many OzBargainers would be interested in these events.

Would it be possible to make a new tab for these events e.g. img? Here are some examples of the events.
    Light the Night
    Mazda Opera
    Lantern Festival

When posting deals, would it be possible to have a separate box or similar for having the "@ Storename" in the title?

I'm quickly running out of room when I have to add AUD estimates and "@ Geekbuying" into my deals even if I try to keep the informative title basic.

    • I've always thought this would be a great idea - I'd even like a non-compulsory box for price/saving so titles are standardised a bit. Having it as a non-compulsory box would allow for deals that don't cover just one item etc.

    • +1

Mods can add the store name later, and are able to go over the limits.

Also try putting it without spaces next to everything. Obviously I mean for certain thingsandnoteverything! The suggestion will space it out for you and allow you to go over the limit.

      • Almost tempted to not add the store title, but people tend to have hissy fits over that. Cutting out spaces still doesn't leave much room, but I'll see how I go with this deal.

    • Hi Clear,

In regards to having the $AU price in the title in addition to the original currency - we did say $AU should be added but only when space allows. If you don't need enough space in your title then leave the $AU out and a mod/pu can add it in later on. The spaces idea by Spackbace can also save a few characters. If you still struggle even after omitting the $AU and spaces then just hit report after you submit the deal and mods can add extra characters past the normal limits

Unfortunately space is already an issue on the home page, especially on the mobile site so increasing the title size for all deals / users is probably not possible as things stand.

      Thanks

      • Thanks for that. I can see how space is an issue, but perhaps if you add it to the line below the title…

Clear 1 hour 23 min ago geekbuying.com Geekbuying

But I can see that being easily missed unfortunately.

    • Should just stick to (1) product / model (2) price and (3) store. Only add specification if you have enough space otherwise they just look like spams / eBay listings where sellers try to jam in as many keywords as they can.

  • Not sure if suggested before and not a huge matter or anything, but for group deals such as this posted today https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/210475 occasionaly people post this first when it is not acitve. Instead of deleting the initial post could a {deal not active} be added in the title and be removed when it is available. This will give people a chance to comment on the deal, (and theoretically purchase it should they wish even though it is not active) and acknowlede the original posters effort when posting the deal.

    • A bit before my time but I believe the guidelines were made back when group buy sites were a lot more popular and we had a lot of deals that required x amount of buyers before it went active, there would also be occasions when deals didn't reach the required amount of buyers and the deal never begin.

Nowadays that rule is only really applied for the eBay group deals, I can't remember ever applying it for any other site in the past couple of years. I guess there is still a risk that an eBay group deal could never go active, although very unlikely. I think your idea is a pretty good one, deal not active in the title and removing it when it goes live - as you say leaving it published can also speed up the amount of purchases and time before it goes active. I think it would be a bit less work for mods and also avoid users being disappointed when their not active deal is re-posted.

Would be interested to see what others think and if other users would prefer that method, as opposed to deals not being posted until they are active? Can then discuss with the other moderators to see what they think and how we can do it (maybe just keep the existing group buy deal guidelines but exclude eBay from them).

      • +1

I think it's a good idea as it'll give a person time to do some research.

      • +1

I think it's a good idea. The group sites seem to always have active deals now, i don't remember the last time i saw a deal that had a minimum number greater than 1. Ebay group deals i haven't looked at much but most of the time it just seems to be countdown until active, rather than a minimum amount before it's 'active'

      • I think it would be a good idea, as you say some people might jump in on it and push it over the required limit.

        • Thanks all for the feedback. Mods have discussed it and we're happy to change the guidelines based on all the reasons mentioned.

I've updated the guidelines here & here and also the eBay posting block. We'll ask users to write [NOT ACTIVE] in the deal title until the deal starts (or powerusers/mods can add it in/remove it).

  • Here's a suggestion in personalising an Ozbargainer's experience and making it more positive.

I would like to be able to filter deals by states just because there are quite a bit on the front page which I find are irrelevant. This can be accomplished by adding the states in the user preferences and also in the deal at the time of creation.

For example, I may only be interested in new deals which are applicable to NSW. I tick "NSW" in my preferences. So when someone creates a deal and they tick "NSW", I am able to see it. However, if someone has only ticked "QLD" or "VIC" in their preferences, then they cannot see that deal. On the other hand, if the deal has "Nationwide" ticked, then everyone can see it.

  • Suggestion: a reminder feature for competitions, similar to the deal reminder. This would be especially handy for competitions with regular entry options, eg one entry per week.

Being able to specify a reminder frequency would be a bonus, but it would be easy enough to this manually (ie. set a new reminder once the previous one has expired/been actioned).

    • Just to follow up on this suggestion, it was implemented on Tuesday - see thread

      Thanks!

      • Great! And thanks for the follow-up - stops me from wondering whether the suggestion was missed/ignored/otherwise deemed unworthy of further action :)

        • No problems, we certainly read and review every suggestion made here and are very appreciative of them.

  • Along the lines of the same QFF deal being posted today, what about some sort of duplication protection? Or is it too hard to do? So if a dupe is detected twice in an hour (for example), the domain is temp-banned for like 5hrs?

Just trying to think of some way to save admin some work from dealing with repeat dupe posts in 1 day!

    • Qantas is now banned and we've put a further message if you put a Qantas URL in there. Unfortunately, we can't force people to search or read warnings. Need more blinking bold fonts maybe…

      • +1

Or a "google hand" that jumps out and slaps them.

      • +2

Had to laugh that it just got posted before and now banned longer. Some people..

  • iOS 9 has changed the formats of both photos and screenshots to .jpeg. OzBargain allows .jpg, not .jpeg. Can this be fixed? Thanks.

    • It will be fixed in the next update.

      • Thanks! Roughly when will that be?

        • Early next week I guess. We are doing site update 1 or 2 times a week.

        • @scotty:

          Cool. Thanks.

  • Are emails (notifiyng of a new comment, msg etc) slow for anyone else? I'm finding these arrving up to an hour late!

    • The email for your msg arrived at 5.12pm

    • Yep. Sometimes I don't even get an email notification about replies and new comments. When you post a store rep, people get very shitty very quickly if you don't respond.

      • It might be a good idea to change this setting if you wish to receive an email for every new comment:

        Settings > Subscriptions > Threads

        Thread notification frequency

Send at most one notification between my viewings of the thread
Send as many notifications as there are updates

        • Thanks. That'll do the trick.

  • Bug: I'm encountering this thing with the epic eBay 15% off thread. When I use the user comments page to browse by "New" comments, the link seems to choke and takes me to some random page. Either that, or new posts aren't being marked correctly. Not sure.

    • If you use the arrow button for the New comments it should bring you to the next / previous comments — not in the chronological order, but in the order they appear in the pages.

      • You mean the one to the right of the footer (the bar that shows "Hidden", "Mark All Read", etc.? Yeah that isn't working correctly either.

EDIT: well I say it's not working correctly, but it just did, with only 2 comments on the same page. If I had to guess, I'd say it's only a problem if there are new comments spread more than a few pages apart??? Or it's something wrong with the comments being moved when this causes the pagination break to move? Dunno.

  • can we email subscribe to the popular competitions, similar to when a deal reaches front page.

    • Now we have "front page" competitions, yes we should be able to do something about that.

    • FYI the email subscription for front page competitions was rolled out this morning. See thread for info

  • A suggestion here:

In cases where a deal is not published because a it already exists, can you put a link that would point us Ozbargainers to the deal that was published in addition to you flagging it as a Duplicate?

    Example:
    "This deal is not published.
FREE Krispy Kreme When You Register on The 7-Eleven Slurpee App (Duplicate)"

In the above example, I feel that it would be a lot more helpful if there was a direct link to "https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/214344" in addition to the Duplicate message.

I would suggest something like this:
    "This deal is not published.
FREE Krispy Kreme When You Register on The 7-Eleven Slurpee App (Duplicate - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/214344)"

This way we would't have to do a search for "Slurpee" to find the deal.

    • What you have described does already exist. If you click on the word 'duplicate' on that deal it will take you to the original post. Let us know if you still have troubles.

      • Oops! My Bad! :$

Since the entire text usually appears greyed out, I didn't know that "Duplicate" was click-able and never attempted to do so either!

Thanks for pointing this out Hamza! :)

  • Suggestion:

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/help:faq_merchants

    What shouldn't I post?

    Replace

The following products or services are not well received and shouldn't be posted

    with

Services that are difficult to openly compare. Deals that usually require quotations, vague or hidden extras, or have ongoing costs.
    Examples of these include:

    • I think perhaps less is more? If we add specifics, a rep could say but we are quoting $999 here for everyone or we don't have ongoing costs.

      • It was more to describe why deals are unpopular. But yes, i can see it both ways.

  • Could we have a way where we can personally unsubscribe or hide certain URLs or keywords in titles from appearing in the Deals area?

E.g. I don't game on PC and there are quite a few Steam/GMG/Humble posts, to me they are like junk mail.

It's not a big issue, it just would be nice.

    • You can go into the deal post page, click on "Hide" under the main content and allow you to hide deals from that user or from that store.

  • Suggestion: Interface for deals

While browsing OzBargain deals in list view, the main thing that catches my eye first is the image accompanying the deal followed by the amount of upvotes/downvotes and then the deal title.

As a user I would much prefer if the images were on the left hand side. So I can naturally glance at the image then the amount of upvotes/downvotes then the deal title.

Thanks for reading, keep up the good work.

  • Changing votes on Items

Please allow changes to votes on deals as it is fairly easy to incorrectly hit the down vote button. I am not suggesting unlimited changes, but allow for one change per deal?

    • There is an option to revoke a vote if you have made an error.

      • I've tried, it didn't let me?

    • To remove/revoke a deal vote (positive or negative): See here. Click on the 'votes' link at the top of the deal then click on this icon next to your vote.

To remove/revoke a comment vote (positive or negative): Click on the 'votes' link under the comment then click on this icon next to your vote.

Revoking/removal is possible with these methods, however you cannot vote again/change your vote (eg change the vote from positive to negative or from negative to positive).

      • Thanks but why can't you vote again?

        • The ability to change (not just revoke your vote) has been requested a few times and is something on the do list for scotty/moocher. From what I remember it's going to be a fairly complex thing to implement but certainly something on the horizon.

        • @hamza23:
          Thanks. Keepup the awesome work!

  • Scotty, please fix the site clock now that daylight savings has started :)

  • +2

Just something that might need looking at because it just became an example but the ability to neg vote a deal long after making a comment. Getting the original comment upvoted, so the community cant downvote it to rule out the neg.
    Here's the example
Now the comment would've originally been upvoted purely out of smart-arsery, but had it had a neg vote attached from the start, I could probably guess that the community would've struck the vote out. But now it's upvoted so highly, there's no chance of that happening, even if the vote is unfounded and incorrect.

Revoking a positive vote for a deal, not a problem if the deal doesn't pan out, but I fear the above is just going to lead to idiots doing the same thing, and OP's reporting the votes in vain.

  • Layout suggestion.

While scrolling through the deals page with a widescreen display, i find myself scanning from left(votes or Title) to the far right to see the image too often.
If the image/link was put adjacent to the vote count either left or right (ebay style), i hypothesis that the information would be processed
by your mind faster allowing for quicker scrolling. I imagine that seeing the vote + image would be easier and quicker to dismiss than seeing the vote then having to read the title to see if your interested.

I hope that doesn't sound too stupid, think of the Carpal Tunnel Syndrome haha.

  • Don't recall if this has been requested yet, but can we receive a notification if one of your referral links was clicked?

    • Yes all these referral related features have been requested. Sorry providing referral is not our primary focus, and it's unlikely we want to flood people's email box for every click. Likely to get our email server into trouble as well.

      • No worries. Maybe a click-count in the Referral page? Low priority, as you say.

        • Click count is already there, together with the last time someone clicked.

        • @scotty:
Oh, haha… didn't even know. Thanks!

  • Not sure how difficult it would be to implement, but…

For the competitions, the ones that require a purchase, is the ability to then put the store to purchase from. Now it could be a drop-down list of the common culprits, plus 'Other'. This would allow better searching for store competitions, better compiling of lists etc. Ie 'I'm going to Woolworths, let me just click on their store page, competitions, ah yes there's the whole list'.

Currently, given most store comps are on other domains, it doesn't link back to the store's page.

So I guess an alternative could be an alternative store URL, like what you do with Groupon etc. When setting up the comp, could have (for example) Woolworths as an alternate store url.

Haha 2 options coz I was thinking as I wrote!

    • Yeah understand what you are saying. What we did with Groupon etc is set any groupon.com.au deal to show the alternative store domain, that is easy to do (just a checkbox we need to click), so for the 'common culprits' you could let us know the domains and we could set the alternative store domain for them. Now that we know, moderators can also keep an eye out for these competitions and set the store manually.

Eg for your swisse.com competition I just set the store to woolworths.com.au chemistwarehouse.com.au so it shows here. I've set swisse.com to show the alternative store domain field too when submitting a comp there - let me know if there are any others & I'll have a look at some recent ones now.

Edit: It probably won't always be suitable eg if it's purchase Swisse at Coles or Woolworths, then we wouldn't be able to set a store and would have to leave it as swisse.com

      • Edit: It probably won't always be suitable eg if it's purchase Swisse at Coles or Woolworths, then we wouldn't be able to set a store and would have to leave it as swisse.com

1 day we'll find a way! Instead of cure cancer, we'll sort this out lol

      • Eg for your swisse.com competition I just set the store to woolworths.com.au so it shows here.

Ham, re-read the title of that competition… ;)

        • Ah! Fixed, thanks

        • All the current (not expired) purchase competitions have the stores set now (any specific issues just hit the report button). See Woolworths, Big W, IGA, Chemist Warehouse etc. So you can use the competition page for each store to see which store specific purchase competitions (or other competitions as normal) are on at that store as you stated earlier.

I've also set 5 or 6 store domains such as swisse.com or disney.com.au to show the alternative store domain box when you submit the comp so you can enter chemistwarehouse.com.au or similar, for the others we'll set them manually as they are posted/we see them (we are checking that area daily a few times at least).

          Thanks

        • @hamza23:

Appreciate the quick work :) wow

    hi there.
when I get the pop-up at the bottom saying someone has replied to my comment I usually click on it to see what the reply is - that works fine.
But I still have the Bell up top to let me know there is a new message (the message I just clicked on via the pop-up.

it would be nice if the reminder bell disappeared if I have looked/clicked the message via the pop-up notification.

    • i've noticed this too and I agree with the suggestion.

      • Yeah I'll try to get that fixed this week. Currently only the desktop-notification will mark the item as read when you click on it.

        • +1

Thank you for looking into this for us.

  • Hey guys.

I had a question regarding the private selling in comments section in deals.

Firstly I fully agree with the rules and regulations, yes people shouldn't post in the comments section of a PS4 deal saying I've got a slightly used PS4, Selling it for xx etc, I fully understand and agree with that.

However, can we separate the "group buy" type situation? Let me give you an example. In recent times many of the console bundles come with download tokens and codes, if I post in the comments section that I wouldn't mind grabbing the code off of anyone who buys the bundle and is happy to part ways with it, can this be excluded from private selling and my comment not be unpublished?

As I'm not selling anything personal and the comment is fully related to the deal at hand, it's more like a group buy if you may. Now I understand you don't want a whole discussion between two people going back and forth for prices so maybe just allow the first comment where I ask of anyone is willing to part ways and that be it, if someone is willing they just reply with check your inbox etc.

Basically all that I am asking is if I can just post a comment saying I'd be interested in grabbing part of the current deal off of someone.

I think it would be great to have such an allowance and you've probably noticed how the download tokens are now pretty standard in the classified section. This first comment being allowed might just help a bit more.

Also I've noticed there is inconsistency in this, a few months ago someone posted how they didn't want the SD card part of a deal and a reply was given and the two even talked about price. This was not unpublished and was allowed, but just recently my comment under the JB hifi Tomb Raider bundle where I ask if I could grab the code off of anyone interested was unpublished.

Can you guys please help out here. Thanks! Hope you understand what I am trying to say.

    • +1

Probably best if you use private messagingin those circumstances. The deal comments will become clogged with unrelated comments.

      • +1

I agree with you on this, and use it as much as I can however sometimes people don't have private messaging on and that's where I wish I could at least leave one reply.

    • Do you have a example deal you can link to?

Also I've noticed there is inconsistency in this, a few months ago someone posted how they didn't want the SD card part of a deal and a reply was given and the two even talked about price. This was not unpublished and was allowed, but just recently my comment under the JB hifi Tomb Raider bundle where I ask if I could grab the code off of anyone interested was unpublished.

Last month 70,000+ comments were made. Comments removed for private selling are enforced manually and are usually only found by people reporting the comments. If people don't report the comments, then we won't see them as we don't read them all.

      Commenting Guidelines

      • Hi Neil,

Thanks for your reply. I might not be able to find the exact SD card thread as there have been quite a few SSD + SD etc. I'll try to find it nevertheless.

I fully understand that the mods do not read each and every comment, and that reporting from people is a large factor however this was not exactly the inconsistency point I was trying to make: from the commenting guidelines you have linked me, under personal sales this is all that is written:

        "Private Sales

Do not advertise items that you are selling in comments. Use the Classifieds section."

How exactly am I selling or advertising a product in the comments section if all I've posted is "I wouldn't mind grabbing the download tokens off of anyone who isn't interested in the game"

My comment was removed due to "personal selling" yet I didn't advertise a product, I can see how it might be seen as a close connection to personal selling on behalf of anyone who replies but doesn't my comment fall more in line with a general comment rather than a direct product placement?

Here's the deal for which my comment was removed due to personal selling:

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/218186

It would be nice if you were allowed to leave at least one comment stating that you'd be interested in the game token and quite a few people sell the tokens they are not interested in.

        Thank you for your time.

        Regards.

        Zylam.

  • I just noticed https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/help:ozbargain_development…

However it hasn't been updated in over a year. Is there a new way of handling ideas?

    • We have:

      • a mod thread tracking bugs/feature requests.
      • an internal ticket/tracker where add bugs/features.
      • a thread in the power user forum listing new site changes.
      • a monthly update thread. October 2015.
      • an ongoing group chat discussing these.
      • monthly meetings where we list things on the agenda.

and then we have that wiki page. So yeah, there is information all over the place. :)

I'll go through that page and update it. There is a lot of development that happens outside what is listed but wouldn't quite make sense to the general person (e.g. mod functions).

  • Further to the above how do you do searches of this thousand comment? For example using site search there are 3 results but it took me using google to find the first occurrence of meta in this thread as the search result only links to the thread start page. It's so unwieldy.

Does the word highlight with blue background mean that the thread is pinned to this forum?

    • Sorry I can't help you with the first part, you are correct in saying the search only takes you to the start page, not the individual page or comment. I'll pass that on.

Does the word highlight with blue background mean that the thread is pinned to this forum?

      Yes that is correct.

      Thanks

  • I realise it would be difficult to block/control, but seems a lot of posts which are effectively duplicates when it comes to offers like ebay coupon use and the current JB HiFi 20% off DVD/Bluray.
Is there really need to post individual product deals? If so, could/should they somehow be linked to original posting?
