Comments / Feedback / Suggestions Thread

I've created this thread for general day-to-day comments/feedback/suggestions, because I think it's better then having to make a new thread every time you have got something little to ask/say.

    • Are you just referring to the 'go to deal' link opening in new tab (not links within the actual deal description)? If so:

My account > Settings > "Deals open in new window"

      Thanks

      • awesome, thanks for the info, that works for deal links, didn't know it existed.

would be good to have an option for it to include all links, nonetheless… maybe i'm getting old or i smoked too much pot as a teenager, but i KNOW there are shortcuts to do it but i always fail to remember when it matters

You can hold ctr and left click on the mouse.
Or if you are using a mouse with scroll wheel, just click on it.

Sorry, if this question has already been asked, couldn't find it in the search results.

What does 'Comment Score Below Threshold' mean?

    • It means the comment has received a number of negative votes thus hiding it from view. At the bottomish of the page you will see the following menu: Hidden - Mark All Read - Top Comments - Top. If you click Hidden, you can show or hid comments with votes below the threshold.

      • Hi Neil,
        Thanks for the quick reply.

  • This is probably a very nooby question:

What are 'clicks' are they the number of times a post has been opened, or are they the number of times the "Go To Deal" has been pressed in a post?

    • Hi BobbyJ,

Clicks represent the number of times 'go to deal' has been pressed.

      • Okay, thanks.

  • +2

lately I've noticed an out of control system where people give a negative vote on comments just for the fun of it or because they are bored and people like JV get hammered just because they have a view. So I think it's time the negative voters are shown like the votes on deals

    • We tried making the negative comments visible 3 or 4 years ago and this lead to an increase in users fighting with each other.

      • Something needs to be done, Maybe drop the limit of negatives to 2 a day? is it really necessary to have voting on comments anyway?

        • Is it necessary to have voting on deals? Power posters love it sooo much they'd still do the same thing without any gauge of positive reinforcement, right?

    • poor JV. Half the time his comments actually asked the OP to fix up their post so it conforms with guidelines eg. price in title, what is the actual deal and expected savings, is this super-expensive thing actually any good. There is nothing wrong with this type of post. Its actually a good thing.

If the trolls spent all their neg allowance on his comments, that stopped them from using it elsewhere. So JV, you're killing two birds with one stone there :)

    • I agree: My post on the member awards congratulating the winners attracted a neg.

      • +1

Yeah some Tosser or tossers are out there, I just got a neg for saying thanks to someone

  • The links in 'Current Coupon Codes' should link to the post where they were first mentioned. E.g. All of the Woolies $10 off $100 codes should link to here for useful info / comments etc. rather than an expected direct link (the first time I hovered over the link, I saw it mentioned Ozvoucher which I assumed wouldn't be a 'go to deal' link).

    • The coupon code list is actually sourced from another website and not all codes are posted on OzBargain.

      • not all codes are posted on OzBargain

Oh, I assumed it was all automatically generated from OzBargain proper. So.. going in reverse, shouldn't the coupon codes on OzVoucher be duplicated onto OzBargain somehow?

        sourced from another website

You make it sound like OzBargain and OzVoucher aren't 100% affiliated, isn't it so?

        • What I am saying that OzVoucher is another website, however the coupon codes there aren't always populated from postings from OzBargain.

  • Anyone else having trouble when hitting 'Post comment' and the page reloads with what should be your newly-published comment, added to the discussion?

I just wrote up a very lengthy reply, hit post comment, and my page went to "cannot connect to the server" or something. Had this issue multiple times since I've returned to OzB, when trying to post. Lost a few replies already :( and I keep forgetting to select all my text and copy just in case before hitting 'post'. Boo.

Haven't had this issue on any other site. Is it a problem on my end? I'm a technoob :P Using the latest version of Chrome on PC here.

    • +2

I can't comment on your problem but I might be able to help with the lost text. Some time back, my internet connection was super flaky and I was experiencing many similar issues several times a day - write up a reply or whatever, hit post and boom, error of some sort and all text lost which as I'm sure you can relate is extremely frustrating.

I installed a plugin/extension called "Lazarus Form Recovery" (FireFox, but read on) which must do periodic saves of what you're typing as you're typing it and if you do have a crash or timeout or whatever, you can get most if not all of it back.

As a test, I typed all of the above and refreshed the page and was able to recover the lot. It appears to be available for Chrome so why not give it a look:

      https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/lazarus-form-recov…

It has saved me countless times and probably a few hours worth of time collectively since installing it.

  • I understand the decision to remove any deals relating to 'adult' products or services. However I don't understand why deals on addictive substances (restricted sales to 18+) are allowed to be posted. There's usually at least 1-2 alcoholic posts per day and I've seen a few other deals pop up for bongs and the like.

I realise it's a line in the sand, but surely everything that's restricted to 18+ should all fall in the same category? Promoting safe sex with a deal on condoms isn't allowed by binge drinking because some grog is half price is fine? Sorry, but there's a serious logic fail in there somewhere.

    • I'm guessing the point is to keep the site safe for work. Extreme PC people can kick a fuss over anything sexual at work because it's still a taboo topic. People walking by won't know that it's a good deal on condoms, they just see condoms on your screen as they walk past.

Wine and whatever else do not carry the same taboo weight as sex. You've heard of people complaining about sexual harassment at work, but not wine harassment.

    • Condom deals are permitted and are quite often posted.

For reference, this is the banned item list. The list is almost entirely based on legalities in Australia. The remainder is mostly based on community feedback.

Australia's drinking culture means that numerous stores sell alcohol so for OzBargainers to manually set their store filtering would be quite tasking. Perhaps we need a flag for alcohol deals?

    Nested Deals.
So when Ebay or dicksmith have a big sale, and there's 10 different front page deals with different items from the ebay or dick smith sale, they can all be grouped under 1 (or maybe stacked beside it so it only takes 2) deal space, and then people can expand them if they want to see what deals are stacked, and you dont get people complaining about it saturating the front page, or whether they should be classified as dupes, etc.
Also when you have an app thats free on IOS, Android, Windows phone, US amazon Store, AU Amazon store, and you get 5 different people posting different deals like the Runtastic deal on 11/01, this would be another time you could benefit from nesting or stacking "similar deals" beneath or beside the most popular or "parent" deal.

    Thoughts?

See link for my incredibly detailed and professional artists rendition of how I think you could do it… done in paint :P http://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/86788/27839/idea.png

    • Supported. Just like today, I get it $20 off Target with the same coupon, I don't need ti taking up the first three spots on my front page.

  • Suggestion: It may already do this, but can messages from "system" be automatically deleted from the inbox after a certain period of time? (say a week)?

    System = user 3

    • Yes I believe the system messages are automatically deleted after 14 days.

      • Thanks :)

  • Getting an error when i search for the word "shaver"

Validation error, please try again. If this error persists, please contact the site administrator.

Seems to be happening on other terms too.

    aaaaaand now it's working

  • Comment notification system seems to have a little bug. I got a second popup notification of a reply to my comment. I think that was because I replied to the reply. It should only notify on immediate replies to my comment, or at the very least filter out replies made by myself

    • Yeah you only get a notification when a new comment has been made replying to your comment. Yes your own comment should be filtered and that's a bug. Thanks for the report.

  • Can alerts have an option to come up in the notifications system in OzBargain instead of email, would make it easier to access via the one website. It might have come up earlier in this thread but I didn't manage to read all 11 pages.

    • Yes I think with notification it might be a good idea to allow certain subscriptions to be either on-site notification or email. We'll look into that this year.

      • Cheers

  • Has Ozbargain ever has a purchase section on a post? So similar to when you enter a comp and say you won it could be same for posts to see how many people actually grab the deal. Would be interesting

    • Thanks this has certainly been suggested before. For personal tracking you can bookmark the deals that you have purchased. For statistics, the "winners" at competition is still experimental, as afterall we cannot verify whether someone actually won the prize, nor can we verify whether someone has actually purchased the product.

  • Hopefully hasn't been mentioned before… but I had a suggestion for hiding competitions. Would it be possible to have a Hide button placed on the competition list screen? So that I don't have to go into each competition to hide the ones I can't enter, but can just do it as I scroll through the list

    Not a problem, just a suggestion :)

    • We have discussed this before internally & it's something that's coming this year, allowing you hide individual competitions that you are not interested in from the listing pages.

      • Awesome! You guys are on the ball! :)

      • Great to hear this is in the pipeline. Would you be able to extend it to deals as well?

        • The biggest issue with the implementation is the amount of processing we need to do on the database level which would affect the performance of OzBargain for everyone (and the site is already pretty slow these days). Thus we cannotI guarantee that these world be implemented for technical reasons.

        • @scotty:
Ok that's fair, thanks for letting me know.

        • @scotty: Would be a handy feature, but certainly wouldn't stop me coming here

    • Can also just search by state:
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/competition/wa

  • Hi there, there doesn't seem to be a referral Wiki for the People's Choice Credit Union Promo, just wondering if someone could add it to the Post or tell me where it is.

  • The "Competitions Closing Soon" box when viewing the Comps page, doesn't list the wins like the Top Competitions box does. Doesn't look right :P

  • I have been a member of this forum for five years and like contributing and discoving deals. However I am overwhelmed by the amount of advertising introduced today. I am talking about really invasive and annoying large pop-ups over the ad link within the deal description on the deals page. There are also other floating ads like "best deal" which only spawns a new pop-up when moving the cursor over the X to close. This may well be due to browser add-ons, but either way I do not have that problem on any other site.

Please ease off on this new heavy advertising and consider the expereince and reader friendliness of the members and guests.

    • Hmm, I don't see any invasive ads like that myself. Where exactly do you see them? Have you tried it from a different computer?

    • It sounds like you may have spyware/adware on your computer. Can you do a screenshot?

EDIT: See previous thread & screenshot

    • I'm not seeing any ads here…

      • Arrgh $%^* you're right. Thanks for the reply. I feel like a right goose now.

  • By the way, StartHere is now Pricepal (Well has been for a little while). Not sure if you can still get their cashbacks to show on here or not but may as well get rid of the icon for Starthere that shows up on deals still?

    • Yes rename Start Here -> PricePal definitely on my todos.

  • Competitions - Instead of winner announcement date, make it draw date. Much more likely to know an exact draw date, than you are to know when they will be told! (ie most say they will know within 2 business days)

    • Yeah sounds good to me, to be honest I always put the draw date in, didn't even think about that. Also the winner can be told they've won before the 'winner is announced' which would cause a problem if they tried to mark themselves a winner before the announcement date.

    • The announcement date is meant to be exactly that - when we'll know who the winners are. We have some code depending on it at the moment and historical data so we can't just change the semantics on that data field.

Most of the T&C's I've read always have an announcement date, and how it will be announced. I would have thought competition organisers are required to specify that information.

The two dates were chosen because they affect action.

      • closing date - when entries will stop being accepted - users must remember to enter before then.
      • announcement date - when winners are known - and can be recorded.

Not sure how useful the draw date is as it doesn't have any consequence as far as I can think of.

      • Right ok so you want announcement date as the day winners names are published? Problem is, sometimes this is 6 weeks after the draw date, and sometimes longer if there's a 2nd chance draw. The positive side to just having it as draw date, is so people know when they're actually going to know if they win or not. Just taking this as an example - Close date is 22/2/15, draw date is 9/3/15, that's over 2 weeks after the close date. Sometimes if people aren't aware of that, they would be thinking they lost if they didn't hear anything after a week, and start throwing out receipts etc.

Just figured draw date is for the people that enter, so they know when they may find out when they won or not. Date winners names are published are really only if they missed the call/email.

I'm still yet to see anyone go back on a comp with the results from The Australian or something like that.

        • Ah I see what you mean - the announcement date is only the public announcement date rather than when the users find out if they have won. I actually thought winners find out they've won on the announcement date. That makes sense now.

        • This change has been rolled out - now there's just a draw date and no announcement date.

        • @moocher:
          Cool :)

Can instant win comps somehow be different though? Just looking at the winners of the Maccas comp and underneath has a draw date, which obviously isn't the case for an instant win. I don't know of an alternative option though!

        • @Spackbace: It's actually using the closing date if the draw date is not available.

  • Add a My Posts link to this top Menu,

Currently we have to go to comments and then to posts.

Please add the same here to the top menu.

    Thanks,

  • On the mobile site, sorting comments by Total Replies, like you can on the desktop site, to get the most recently commented posts up top

  • A couple of quick questions that I couldn't find answers to in the Wiki:
I accidentally refreshed a page before I had read all the comments, and couldn't find a way to mark all unread. Is that possible?
After mistakenly voting a + for a post, I wanted to cancel that. Was sure it could be done before, but couldn't work it out now?
    Thanks

    • I accidentally refreshed a page before I had read all the comments, and couldn't find a way to mark all unread. Is that possible?

      Nope.

After mistakenly voting a + for a post, I wanted to cancel that. Was sure it could be done before, but couldn't work it out now?

Yes, for deals, go to the votes tab.

      It should say:

You voted +1 on this deal. REVOKE

Click the revoke button to remove your vote.

Thanks for the feedback. I will add this to the FAQ.

      • Cheers for the help. Pity about not bein able to mark unread - looks like the only workaround may be to use a different browser, or log out (maybe).

  • Anyone having trouble browsing the website on android/Google Chrome. It's really sluggish and I think it's to do with some of the ads coming up. I have a Note 2 with plenty of ram. Really annoying!

  • Whats with all the posts with CHEAPEST EVER? I thought we weren't allowed to put things like that in title

    • Three posts, certainly nothing to write home about

    • Yes that's seen more as marketing speak which is unnecessary, especially for store rep posts. The user should receive a warning when phrases like this are added to the title about excess marketing speak. Cheapest ever is better for the description if it must be added.

Have fixed those recent posts up now.

      Thanks

  • Has anyone requested to maybe add a tab for paypal etc donations to posters of deals. I've saved several hundred / thousand dollars over the years and would like to give some back from time to time to the people who post the deals to the site. Just wondering if there is anything like this in the works? Especially Trent!!!!!

  • Has anyone got a red stroke through the https:// on any page of OzBargain

and has anyone notice when you mouse over the "Deals" it takes a couple seconds longer than usual, same goes with the green + sign when refreshing the deals pages. Just little things, I tried different browsers.. was wondering if this was a server upgrade

    • Which browsers have you tried? Maybe a screenshot of the Certificate Information? Certainly don't see red stroke through the https:// on my end (Chrome 41 stable & Firefox 36)

      • Nevermind it's just Chrome, I thought Firefox was doing it too. Chrome 42 beta, that may be why with the red stroke

But both browsers have the slower loading than used to

        • Maybe something related to this?

          https://ma.ttias.be/chrome-version-42-starts-marking-sha-1-s…

OzBargain is currently getting A+ on SSL Labs' report and we are certainly not using any SHA1 certificates. Maybe I'll install Chrome 42 and check it out myself.

Edit: on Chrome 42 now still seems to be fine. However I am guessing some external SSL resources (ads for example) might be served from a web server that is deemed insecure by Chrome 42+.

        • @scotty: Wow very nicely looked into, thanks scotty!

  • Feedback

I really like the comment popup thing that tells you what your voting score is: http://i.imgur.com/oN6qUyO.png?1

  • While posting my latest deal, I remembered I had posted quite a similar one last year, went to see if I could press a button that would be something like 'Submit a deal like this'. Then it would Pre fill certain/all fields for you to edit from the original deal.

Not sure how much would be involved in this though, minor suggestion really.

  • I'm a bit late with this. A while ago I pressed live, and it captured a talk to the moderator post, which was otherwise hidden but I was able to read it and click back and forth with it.

    • That's weird. Do you remember the date of when this happened and the post? Feel free to TWAM or PM me.

      • Sorry can't help. It was probably 6 months ago. A very short post. I think a user was suspended or locked for 24 hours and was asking why.

        • Live should only show publicly viewable threads and comments, ie it won't even site off-topic threads.

Likely someone posted TWAM in site discussions or other forums, which later on got moved to TWAM.

  • I've noticed that unpublishing comments is being handled more elegantly and efficiently now and more importantly, there's no need to dob ourselves in anymore. Love it! :)

  • What, no announcement about the changes I've noticed today? :P

So besides a few things added to the 'My Account' drop-down, and automatic notification of comments on a post, any other changes? :)

    • +1

Took me a while to work out why the first option in the 'My-account' drop down wasn't taking me to my comments, I don't do mornings…

    • We are putting all site changes into the Power User forum but here are some of today's changes (excluded backend/mod stuff):

      Bug Fixes

      • Disallow penalised users from adding/removing classifieds expiry
      • Fix up newsletter subscription settings for registering users who have checked the newsletter checkbox.

      New Features

      • Migrate store IDs to use domain ext_id field. The visible effect of this is domains such as eBay, iTunes, Google Play have sub-stores in the format https://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals/<domain>/<profile-ID> instead of /deals/<domain>?sid=<profile-ID>
      • Add "Posts" and "Voted" to the "My Account" drop down
      • New 1st level comments will send notification to OP
      • New moderator functionality 'Derive Store' to derive node's various associated domains based on URL and altdomain. This is useful when facebook/G+ stores are created after the deal/comp was posted.
      • Private msg preview button

Maybe we should post the site changes on this thread or somewhere in site discussion?

Oh and we are currently having DB problems with our host which is why things are slow today.

      • Maybe have a 'Site Updates' thread in here, always handy to know :)

        • Thread on the current slowness: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/190445

General thread on site issues: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/140465

        • @scotty:

Just meant a post for when you update things, add features etc, like an announcement thread. Haven't noticed 1 stickied, not to say that it doesn't exist!

        • @Spackbace: Yeah there's a thread which we update whenever we deploy new changes (usually 1-2 times a week) however visible only to the power users. For major changes we'll announce them here.

      • Private msg preview button

Thanks for this one in particular, OzB team! Helps noobs like me check for formatting issues before sending. Much appreciated.

Add "Posts" and "Voted" to the "My Account" drop down

Also appreciated features. Thanks for constantly improving the site. I think the pop up alert for comment replies, PMs etc has been my favourite addition of all.

        <3

  • I've noticed your https connection is slashed in Chrome, apparently due to outdated server settings. Wasn't sure if your team was aware.

  • How to search for deals in a particular category but sorted by the number of votes?

    • You can search within a category however you can't filter by votes.

      Your filter options are:

      • Relevance
      • Post Date
      • Last Comment
