Comments / Feedback / Suggestions Thread

I've created this thread for general day-to-day comments/feedback/suggestions, because I think it's better then having to make a new thread every time you have got something little to ask/say.

I'd reckon it would be cool if the orange bar at the top stayed consistently on the page as you scrolled down just like facebook :)

    • It's actually a bit "tricky" when you are browsing to a specific anchor on the page (for example #comment-12345 to go to a specific comment). Browser will scroll the current view so that element will be at the top of the page — except if the orange title bar is fixed at top, it would block off the content that you would like to see.

Well it's a bit hard to explain it, but basically there's complexity fixing it. Obviously you can trigger some Javascript function to scroll back up a bit to line up the element you wish to see just below the orange title bar, but that's a bit fiddly.

  • another suggestion;

When I have selected 'Hide from Listing' for a particular domain, I would like to not receive those deals sent via email when they become popular.

  • +1

Change the duplicate guideline that if a duplicate hits over 50 votes It can stay. That is stupid, especially when both posts are less than one page away from eachother.

    • The guideline was enacted from discussions here. Probably best to discuss in that thread.
(50 votes is significant as that is the threshold for when a deal gets posted to Facebook, G+, & Twitter.)

      • +1

Yes but any good duplicate will gain votes if it's not recognised as a dupe straight up

  • Deals from one place are continually being grouped together despite being for different products and with different expiry times. Then when one of them expires or some idiot cant figure how to work it, they say the whole things expired.. so theres deals and coupons on here that still work that are listed as expired because no one knows how to use the tag system and go to specific page deals (eg https://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals/deliveryhero.com.au)…

Ive been through so many times now lookin in expired to find things because of this im just about done with Ozbargain all together. Then tonight, one of my deals is removed because its similar to another one. This is the only site that does coupons that is retarded enough to group them together in a way where you cant just see all the expiry and codes side by side… Not only that but after deleting my deal, i emailed the mod to say I could not be bothered to rewrite it… so they amended the original deal i posted and now theres only one expiry date (301 days) listed in the page itself which is correct for one coupon but the other one ends in a few weeks - so on first glance it will be missed.. To top this off my tag for delivery has been removed but takeaway has been left. DeliveryHero doesnt even offer takeaway you idiots!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    GET IT TOGETHER

    • -3

LOL this is the feedback section and im being negged for giving feedback? and your negging me without even a bit of feedback as to why?
What a fractured joke this site has become.

      • -1

Awesome another neg without comment - so good seeing these internet heros keeping the world safe with one hand on their crotch and the other deciding on whether to like or +/-

This is the last time ill post on Ozbargain.

        • +1

Cheer up chappy, here's a +1 to make you happier

        • -1

          @Food:
Some folks might get their jollies from +'s but ill leave that wankery to the Ozbargain on my way out.

        • +1

@happysound: what happened to "This is the last time ill post on Ozbargain."

      • You can give feedback without being a dick about it.

        • Do you mean without being negative, honest and passively aggressive through the text? Yes, I very well could of, but that would completely go against the point of feedback. Unless feedback just means friendly pats on the back n rubs to the groin??

        • @happysound: I mean giving feedback like a civilised adult.

Imagine if you were providing a free service to strangers and those entitled strangers were rude at you for providing that free service which you are not obligated to use.

If you come barging in and throwing a tantrum, how much effort do you think people would give in assisting you?

        • Yes, constructive feedback is welcomed and encouraged. Attacking users and changing your gravatar to an anus/hemorrhoid is not.

        • +1

@neil: "changing your gravatar to an anus/hemorrhoid is not" LMAO

    • Deals from one place are continually being grouped together despite being for different products and with different expiry times. Then when one of them expires or some idiot cant figure how to work it, they say the whole things expired..

Generally, when 1 item expires a user will strikethrough what is expired. Do you have an example?

so theres deals and coupons on here that still work that are listed as expired because no one knows how to use the tag system

Link? Tagging Guidelines. We also wrote up a guide including tagging in the help.

Then tonight, one of my deals is removed because its similar to another one.

You posted a deal that offered the same thing with 2 different codes. We encourage users to combine posts when the merchant is the same.

This is the only site that does coupons that is retarded enough to group them together in a way where you cant just see all the expiry and codes side by side

If you take a look at the deal you posted, you will see a coupons link in the store box. You will see all active coupons for Deliveryhero. Dominos is another example which has loads of active coupon codes.

Additionally, if you only want to see coupon codes, you can check OzVoucher which is only coupon codes.

To top this off my tag for delivery has been removed but takeaway has been left.

FYI, you incorrectly tagged the deal.

      You put:

      Coupon,Delivery,DeliveryHero,Takeaway,Voucher

      See our tagging guidelines

coupon, deliver, takeaway and voucher are ambiguous tags.

deliveryhero is a store. Stores don't need to be tagged as they are linked on the store page.

  • LOL forget it folks. I won't be posting anything I find on Ozbargain or commenting. Why takeaway and delivery arent tags but things like lunch is, is beyond me and any generous sugar coating on feedback. You want examples of deals that have been struck out as expired that arent or vice versa.. just look through comments on the last 3 pages of deals for Delivery Hero… most have now been amended or actually finally expired though..

You can have this shiny badge back now!

  • You want examples of deals that have been struck out as expired that arent or vice versa.. just look through comments on the last 3 pages of deals for Delivery Hero… most have now been amended or actually finally expired though..

Not sure I understand you. Are you saying those deals shouldn't be expired? We haven't made any changes to any Delivery Hero deals tonight other than yours.

  • Mods, does the pop-up in this screenshot I took here have anything to do with this site?

It appeared as soon as I opened the OzB page in the background. The only other pages I was running were all OzB tabs. No other program was running besides Firefox.

I clicked cancel on the pop-up anyway. Wondering where it came from though…?

    • Are you using any Ad Blocking extension? Just google "afr.php" gives quite a few info. For example this one at Mozilla.org. Try to clear your browser cache / cookies?

      • Ah, cheers. I googled the domain in the pop-up but not the afr.php. Way more results with that! Thanks. Will look into it.

I live dangerously - no ad blocking that I'm aware of lol. Guess it's time to change that…

        Cheers scotty.

  • The ability for user to filter the live feed to exclude or some way identify posts relating to expired deals.

For example, deals expired where a user posts an update about delivery success/failure etc, you can't identify the post as relating to an expired deal without clicking through to the OP.

Has a 1999 template been used, the look has changed and to me looks very old.

    • now you have said this, yes it does look dated now, very old wordpress template style.

    • +1

I hit CTRL-0 thinking I had zoomed it and made it look horrid.

  • +1

Mobile site: Ozb logo too big, post heading too large :)

  • I first thought the color was wrong (dark) but overall I like the changes.
    The site feels more crisp.

  • +1

Yuck, don't like it personally…hopefully it will grow on me.

I don't like the linked deal headings the most I think.

  • +3

Awful font. And the colour at the top isn't good to look at with a Toshiba laptop, now is is dark brown and black and hard to look at.

There is also a bug in where it says how many comments / how many new comments. For posts I have not seen, it just shows, for example, 12comments , once I look at the post (open it up) it will then say 12comments / 12new comments - this is wrong, it should be the other way around and how it was before this update.

  • For colour/font change related discussions, please use this thread.

    • what about this bug…
There is also a bug in where it says how many comments / how many new comments. For posts I have not seen, it just shows, for example, 12comments , once I look at the post (open it up) it will then say 12comments / 12new comments - this is wrong, it should be the other way around and how it was before this update.

      • A post with "new" next to the title implicitly means that all the comments are new. Once you have view the page, the post itself is now marked as "viewed" and the comments will be marked as viewed as well a few minutes later. Thus when you go back to the listing page, there will no longer be "new" next to the title of the deal (deal already viewed), but showing the number of comments that might be new (which will correct itself after a few minutes after the comments themselves are also marked as viewed).

    Suggestion:
Make a field for deals where you can select the state(s) it's valid in, so they are categorised and other states can be hidden while logged in.

  • +1

Noticed that you have added type filter I have asked to filter Ads, Competitions etc.

Thanks Mods now it's easy to filter out the post types I don't want to see.

  • Has anyone ever suggested a badge if your deal breaks three figures eg 1000+

I think that would be cool.

  • I'm glad to see deals with prices not confirmed removed.

  • Any reason why expired front page deals aren't in that click to expand tab anymore?

    • Sorry not really sure what you meant. You mean the Grid front page? Expired deals are still shown when you click on "Show n Expired Deals" link.

      • That's alright, the grid reverted to the usual one for some reason

  • Sorry if mentioned before… Optional time of expiry of a deal. Handy for something like the scoopon deal I just posted which is up for 24hrs.
Just an optional field, in 1 time zone or local.

    • You can type in the time after the date.

      E.G. eBay 15% off sale ends 16/9 11:59PM.

So in the Expiry it says, 2014-09-16 11:59pm. You can also do the same with the start. All times are in EST.

      • Ah cheers :)

  • +2

Just seeing the eBay threads with ridiculous amount of votes, I wonder if it would be worthwhile updating the vote rendering so that anything over 1,000 votes will render as 1.xk so that it is essentially limited to 4 characters? (Heaven forbid a deal should ever reach 10,000 votes… but cross that bridge when you come to it, LOL.)

That's how Quora has dealt with large vote numbers on its website at least…

    • Good suggestion.

  • Small suggestion, is it possible to add an "Education" category when posting a bargain? In my last deal - free classroom biology poster, I wasn't sure what to place it under. Maybe there is an appropriate category that I have overlooked.

    • Education category has been created and moved all the udemy.com deals, online courses, etc over.

Also created Education & Work forum as there has been increasing number of posts on education & work related issues.

      • Cheers for the update Scotty

Maybe we will start to see some serious good deals posted shortly for Sydney realestate!

    • +1 same. Only if it was minus 100 years.. #weareportadelaide

    • Some problem with the database (& the code). Hopefully all fixed now.

      • fixed ta

I think Posts shouldn't be allowed to post USD Prices but only show the converted price as they are not showing the true price.

    • +5

Converted at what rate - Paypal, credit card (what card) etc.

Way too many variables that can not be accounted for. Using the billing currency is the most accurate.

      • -3

Converted to Aussie rate Since we are Aussie. So quite simply if it's $50USD Then post should say what its actually going to cost so it would be $56.51AUD

        • Think you're missing the point - there are way too many conversion rates for differing payment methods.

$50 USD can be $57 on PayPal, $55 on my Amex and $56 on my Visa card. So which one should be used?

        • @Chuppa:

Exactly. If the spot rate is used then people who get slugged various other rates by their preferred payment method will complain that the deal cost more than what was suggested in the post.

Maybe the poster can make mention of the conversion at the spot rate in the post, but it's not something you can automate, making it very difficult for mods to enforce.

Best just to leave well enough alone.

        • -2

@Chuppa: Well I would go with what the majority of Australia has- Normal Credit card, the others are bonus

        • +2

          @TRENT86:

Normal Credit card, the others are bonus

You're missing the point. Each credit card network charges a different rate (eg. yesterday $1 USD was $1.151278 AUD according to Mastercard but only $1.150501 AUD according to Visa) and each bank can have a differing commission on top of this.

There is no "Normal credit card" rate for people to use.

  • Hi mods.

Suggestion. Why not have the date & time stamp of a post, rather than this?

I realise it changes after 24 hours to show date & time, but why not be consistent across the board?

    Cheers. TA.

    • +1

I actually like it like that, as I can quickly see how recent a post is at a glance.

After a day I feel it's less important as it has gone 'stale' anyway, so the date is fine.

      • Ye, fair enough. Good point.

  • Could we see a review system for products implemented? Like when you search for a store you get a star rating and reviews for that store but this would be when you searched a product in the system it would also show a rating system with reviews.

    • There is a review system for products. e.g. iPhone 5. It pulls the reviews from productreview.com.au.

It's a manual process to link up the PR reviews with the product so if you don't see a review please report it. Sometimes there just aren't reviews on PR as well.

      • It would be nice though if the site has it's own system, I trust ozbargainers a lot more than product review site reviewers. That way we could review products that product review doesn't do (Which is a lot) :)

        • Agree with you. We have discussed this before but I believe it may be quite complex.

The other idea we were thinking is to pull product reviews through Amazon which generally tend to be somewhat verified and accurate.

        • @neil: Yeah Amazon have a pretty good review system

        • @neil:

Can you hook it in to the comments/forums system and have a discussion per product? That way we can at least see comments specific to a product, although on second thoughts that would drastically increase mod work…

        • @zzyss: One single discussion per product (or store, in case of reviewing of stores) is certainly the goal although people seem just create new forum threads without searching for prior discussions.

That's certainly something that can be resolved. Same with having reviews on OzBargain so we don't depend on ProductReview / Amazon — just that we have other priorities at the moment & might need to ramp up the development a bit…

  • One feature I want to add is a way to track which deals I participated. Currently I only upvote the deals I participate for my own record.

I know I can mark a product as want/have/had, but product different to deal and most of the time a deal does not have a product.

    • Could you bookmark that deal to keep a record of what deals you have participated in, maybe even make a folder called 'participated' and bookmark those deals in there?

    • +1

Tried that. Too many clicks and have to return to the deal page from the list. Sorry for being lazy. XD

  • I was scrolling through the deals and my fat fingers accidently clicked the neg button on a deal. Maybe a confirm neg pop-up for mobile site?

    1. Is it possible to view a list of comments that I up voted?
    2. Is it possible to bookmark comments?
      Thanks
    • Unfortunately there isn't a way yet. I guess you just want a way to find an informative comment that you might have up voted previously? Might be something we will look into in the future.

      • Be great if it can be done. I see heaps of comments idlike to act on at a later date. usually I look at my up vote list and grab deals weeks later, so it would also be helpful, or if we could put individual comments in folders.

        • usually I look at my up vote list and grab deals weeks later

You must miss out on heaps of good deals. :)

        • +1

@eug: I miss a few but I can tell which ones need to be snapped up quick

  • Just a quick question………..

Often when I click on a deal immediately after receiving the daily newsletter I find it's "Sold out" or "Expired".

Reading the deals I find they were posted many hours ago.

My email arrives at around 6:30pm, is there a way to get it "earlier" ?

    Thanks.

    • Yes. Your newsletter settings are here

You can also exclude expired deals.

      • Thanks heaps !!

I honestly spent ages searching for something like that !!

  • Does anyone receive the free cable from Kogan?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/157452

    I still haven't after a month.

  • I would like to see more gravatars on profiles. Maybe put the info on how to do it on the homepage for a few days.

    • Good idea, we can add it to the frontpage tips rotation, I'll add the suggestion to the thread in PU forum.

      • @Trent86

Neil has put the tip on the front page now in rotation, thanks for the suggestion.

  • I would like the ability to up vote OP comments in forum posts. Not the post, like the Deals, just the comment.
Giving a positive would be nice, of course that would also mean the ability to give a negative.

    • You can vote for comments in the forum posts currently.

      • I mean the original posters comment/post.

        • If you meant voting on the forum post itself, unfortunately it is not possible at the moment nor is it planned. Deal / Competition posts are voted to determine how good they are as deals / comps. I don't think rating forum discussions is useful.

        • @scotty: I agree scotty. Some forum op are great and I wish could be up voted, but I can picture an influx of forum posts if it happened.

        • @scotty:
Voting would be useless, as well as ratings and sorting, I like those they way they are.
I just want to + when I am too lazy to comment on a good post ;)

  • One more tip you could add to front page. A lot of newbies don't know how to see if am item is already listed or how to compare. The simple Put the name of the retailer in search and click it will show all current deals for that store :)

    • Yep we have got a tip up about store search already. We will get them going on the front page again soon I think.

  • +1

Scotty & team, has it ever been discussed to provide users with IM Chat capabilities on your site? I think it would be an awesome addition.

Also, as I've said on another forum, please consider reverting to your old fonts. I initially believed your move was a good one, but now I'm not so sure. The site seems to have lost some of its warmth & uniqueness. Do others agree?

    Many thanks, TA.

  • Is there anyway to stop receiving updates on new comments?

I contributed to a forum thread and I no longer want to receive any updates on my Comments page, i.e. the orange "box" that might say "20 new". I know, I could just ignore them, but would like to know if there is a way.
