i don't like the new font for deal titles. it seems tall and thin and much harder to read. maybe it is just my imagination

    • +18

They look more like ads now hidden amongst real listings

      • +5

        What ads?

        • Fads

    • +45

Hopefully there'll be a deal for eyeglasses soon, because you need them to read the deal titles. So squeezy font. Overall impression? Yuk.

    • +11

Ah how mobile design has started to affect other sites. Windows Mobile, iOS7 and now OzB.

Kind of like the previous version still. But this new flat one will take a few days and we'll probably start to just like it or accept it. As long as the site works and is fast, all is good.

    • +3

Agreed. I also think the new header menu looks too flat and generic.

    • +54

I prefer the old bold titles also so I've created this:
      https://userstyles.org/styles/105023/ozbargain-old-title-sty…

It only resets the deal titles back to bold Arial as before, doesn't touch anything else.

      • +5

Thanks - my eyes don;t stress anymore. I dint mind anything else about the design except the skinny title font. Just wait until you hit your forties and your eyes start deteriorating - it will happen! Unless you already wear glasses…..

      • +6

OMG thanks champ…made all the difference ;)

      • +3

Sorted, thanks heaps. Wish I could + your comment endlessly.

      • +3

        Thank you!

      • +3

Thank you so much, that's way better!

      • +3

        Perfect! Thanks goosmurf!

      • +2

Nice. Would it be possible to completely replace the CSS with previous version using Stylish?

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/themes/ozbargain/style.css?ver=…

      • +1

        THANK YOU!!! :)

      • Nice job - I don't mind all other changes to the design, but the titles are so much harder to read / differentiate so this works much better.

    • +35

      Looks terrible… sorry webmaster.

If it wasn't broke, why "fix" it?

      • -1

Because change is as good as a holiday! :)

        • Some companies make changes post haste , just before the fan is started. No reference is implied with or to oz bargains

      • +5

People always do this with every site change and we see it all the time e.g Facebook, YouTube, Google, Hotmail. It usually goes like this: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, Acceptance… Yes, that's the The 5 Stages of Loss and Grief.

    • +6

What is this? Arial narrow? Too thin, the thighs don't touch.

    • +4

yeah the thin-ness makes it hard to read for me, I thought it was just me but the plus votes show it isn't.
(my monitor is set to a higher resolution than the pixels of it)

      • +1

Got to agree with this - it's just too thin - the boldness of the BLUE on deals made it more easier to read and determine which deals are of interest to me. Would much prefer to return to the older font.

    • its either the font or my imagination, but i read that as tities ( . Y . )

    • +1

Agree. the font is almost nice but looks squished. needs to be wider. It almost looks like the listings are banner ads!

    • +1

      I have eye strain :(

    • New fonts are very distracting!

  • +4

    I posted similar here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/3664?page=8#comment

mattgal I'm finding it harder to read, it might be me?

    • +3

Yeah I find the font harder to read also.

  • +23

Sorry it's not Aprils fools day so why this joke on us?

  • +24

I like the style from a design point of view however I feel the old site had that kind of silly whimsical charm with it (bright colours, it popped) which melded well with the community.

  • +8

The orange bar with the black underneath is ok, but the brown part with 'site discussion' is so bad. The title font is super dodgy too :(

  • +6

It seems a lot harder on the eyes to read IMO.

  • +9

Font makes the site look tall and thin, harder to read

  • +7

Too much spacing between deals, can only see about 4 deals on the front page - going to wear out my scrolly bit on my mouse.

  • +2

    div.node h2.title {
    font-family: Arial, Sans-Serif;
    }

    instead of

    div.node h2.title {
    font-family: 'Arial Narrow', Arial, Sans-Serif;
    }

    • +10

      Nah, this:

      div.node h2.title { font-family: Comic Sans, Sans-Serif; } instead of div.node h2.title { font-family: 'Arial Narrow', Arial, Sans-Serif; }
    • +2

What is this new 'Anal' font…. oh.

  • +15

    Awful font.

there is also a bug in where it says how many comments / how many new comments. For posts I have not seen it just shows, for example, 12comments , once I look at the post (open it up) it will then say 12comments / 12new comments - this is wrong, it should be the other way around and how it was before this update.

  • -4

    I like the new look ! :D

    • +2

LOL people, you can't just neg the person cause you don't like their opinion - that's what this whole thread is about

    • Some people prefer New Coke to Coke classic.

    • -1

I like you whom likes the new look XD

  • +17

I hadn't really noticed the font, but the colour of the bar is really hard on the eyes.

    • +3

Yeah it looks like sh*t - literally.

  • +6

the new title's on deals page is woeful— why use a stretched out font?

  • +18

    It looks….cheap! lol

  • +1

Looks good on mobile, not so much on pc

  • +1

It's okay, but the title font needs to be in bold to be more readable.

  • +16

Shitty Font. And deal titles need to be in BOLD.

Nothing else really bothers me though.

Seems like change for the sake of change IMO. No real improvement.

    • +4

The titles not in bold is what I'm missing the most, the astonishingly crappy colours I can live with but the titles are now lost amongst everything else.

    • +3

+1 for bold titles. Definitely harder to read without bold titles. Other than that, it is just needs a little getting used. :)

  • +5

very hard to read the font, not good :(

  • +2

Personally, I reckon it looks slicker. The live feed is definitely easier on the eyes.

    • +1

whats different about the live feed, seems the same to me?

  • +5

I really appreciate your efforts in trying to improve… but I really liked the old site. The look and feel was great!

  • +3

Yeah I find it harder to read than the old font

  • +6
  • +5

Should have made this a poll so ppl could vote without having to comment as most probably won't bother.

Reminds of when Aldi release a "new and improved" version of something, always means they've "cheapened and ruined" it.

  • +3

Yeah my eyes don't like the new font, a lot harder to read

Looks like something I would find on an ancient website published by some random who just learn't how to code

  • +13

    i hate this

  • +3

Font on the titles / text in the main body doesn't match the font on the sidebars. Getting on my nerves…

Here's where you spot all the OCD people…

  • +5

Sorry but web design should be left to web designers.

The latest update clearly hasn't been done by a web designer :(

    • +2

To clarify here, I am referring directly to the design, not the development. I have no question that Scotty is more than competent at developing for the web. But design really is a completely separate discipline, and typography while seeming simple, can be a difficult thing to get right.

  • +2

Even the font in classified section is different to deal pages.

  • +1

Writing too skinny, that's all. Change the font (Calibril Arial) and all good

  • +2

    No, No, No, NO, NO!
    Going crosseyed…

  • This kind of discussion happens every time we have a colour/font/template change, so thank you and I'll take them as comments. And thanks I learnt programming back in the '80s so all these HTML / CSS thing are certainly a step up from writing directly into shared memory of a VGA card when doing a UI design :) We also know that design trend, just like fashions, comes back every 15-20 years so it appears a flatter / non-gradient look is "in" these days, not to mention simplified CSS rules help us to re-theme the front-end for possibly other sites.

/me putting a </sarcasm> tag here just in case

Well. Keep the comments coming as the code still fluctuates quite a bit.

    • +2

Can't give you a plus, so I'll post it instead! +1

    • +4

How can we change it back, can't seem to find the option in settings?

    • +16

Can you add a poll to this thread or start a new one, put it to a vote? Unless there's no point of course, if it doesn't actually matter what the community thinks then it's irrelevant.

      • +1

I guess there's no mystery to which part of the above is applicable.

    • +4

This kind of discussion happens every time we have a colour/font/template change,

How about an official announcement or alert of some kind?

For all we knew, your site shat itself or some script kiddies had way too much time on their hands.

  • +11

Sorry Scotty, font is really hard to read. Might need a Specsavers deal to be posted.

  • +3

I know HTML and I like it.

HTML stands for 'How To Meet Ladies' right?

  • +4

It does look pretty good on mobile now, but is it possible to have the headings in bold for the desktop site? Clearly I'm not everyone, but 99% of my OB viewing is on desktop.

  • +2

This font is hard to read…

  • +14

To be perfectly honest these changes will make me use this site less. Sounds dramatic, but I am physically struggling to read the front page titles. Eyesight is priceless, money can't buy. Bargains are not.

    • +4

I have to agree. It's straining my eyes and feels quite uncomfortable. The grey side borders detract attention away from text on the page too, I feel, which makes it even more of a strain.

    • -2

The mind of OzBargainers. They will travel 20km to save $5, spend 20 minutes filling out a rebate form to get back $5, but a font change and it's all game over. On your browser, press Ctrl +, that will enlarge the fonts of the whole page.

      • +1

How is font changes in any way related to saving money? Why are you even comparing them?

  • +3

For those not liking the font in particular, and if you are using Chrome, download the Font Changer with Google Web Fonts. Magically remove the silly narrow font and replace with standard Arial.

  • +1

Change the font for a thread, but everything else is goood

  • +5

fonts horrid… feel like i'm going cross-eyed trying to read it… (not that there's anything wrong with being eye placement impaired)

  • +1

The old colour scheme was better IMO, clearer and easy to read. Didn't think there was anything that needed changing.
I use my own fonts so don't mind the font change.

  • +6

Kindly revert back the new look, its horrible!

  • +2

I preferred the brighter orange - otherwise a nice change!

    • +2

The black banding makes the site look really odd tbh, much prefer the old site where the colours blend well and aren't too contrasted like this.

  • I like it, looks sharp.

  • -3

On Pc, it looks like it is all over the place. At least make the tittle bold!! We want cheap/free, good service without paying. Thank you!

  • +3

I do like the original bright orange that was used for the header.

The title font is very thin and reading does seem to strain the eye a bit.

  • I love it. Though I do agree the deal title font might be a bit too thin against the very bold colours and images surrounding it, especially when squished between 2 tags.

  • +2

Don't like the black and brown in the header. Something lighter and less contrasty would be better.
Also need more emphasis on the title of the post.
