Did the look and feel of OZB site is changed?

I checked early this morning and it was fine and checking it now and it looks different. Colors are different..fonts are different…..it looks it has got flat icons and look now..

Most of peoples issues would much improved if the deal titles were simply bolder so they don't blend together. I find myself at least 50% slower skimming the deals with new layout. Please bold at least?? It's like a 5 sec change and would help so much.

As people have mentioned, the deals look like ads. My brain has become accustomed to skipping ads over time - so it's really struggling with the new layout. It causes fatigue!!

I also upgraded to new chrome beta and it looks shocking on it - way to large / too much white space.

Nah, the titles are much harder to read now, not sure about you guys, but that's probably 90% of what I read on here. Unfortunately I don't think OzBargain will change it back, very few website, if any, has reversed their amazing design. They'll read the feedback, listen to your opinion etc, but in the end they know best. Such a shame, my favourite site :|

Anyway, no silly font gonna stop me from saving money!!

    • +5

      Yeah you're right.
Such a shame. It's far slower to navigate.
Probably a matter of pride. Can't Be wrong etc
      Definitely a fugly backwards step.

Reading Scotty's comments on this earlier in thread i'd have to agree too

  • +1

don't know about you guys, but the fonts just a bit too "slim" for my liking..

  • +2

A pretentious and ultimately failed attempt at creating a "designer" feel.

OzBargainers like clear, concise and bold titles. Please fix this!

Feels like I've time travelled back a decade.

  • +8

Shhhh, don't tell Scotty guys….the search page still uses the bold titles. i.e.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/search/node/ssd

That page looks perfect, it's got the 'flat' looking navigation bar, same colour without the dodgy black and perfect font. Make them all like this :D

  • The main issue with the new design is that it is harder to browse through the site quickly and find the deals of interest. Most people would like to quickly look at the deal titles first.

The increase use of darker black and bold text being used in places which are less important are causing those areas to attract attention (which is distracting).

The deal titles need to stand out more. It is okay not to use bold for the deal titles, but that will require areas using bold text having less dominating colour and/or much smaller font size.

There are some good changes. However, those ones basically change to use weaker colour (to avoid overpowering the really important bits). Avoiding using bold font needs a fair amount of work.

I do think it looks more modern, but 2 simple changes could make it look much better.

    1. Make titles bold
    2. Make thumbnails slightly smaller (less white space under each link's text)

Here is what it would look like: image.

Note that the thumbnails aren't cropped correctly as I only changed code in Chrome's in-line editor.

    Here is what I changed:

    div.node h2.title {
        color: #128;
        font-weight: bold;

    And:

    div.foxshot-container {
        height: 130px;
        position: relative;
        width: 130px;

Yeah, making the titles bold again would be great.

Currently, the site looks like a photo without a real focus (it is like everything is in focus, making it hard to look at the bits you really want). It really needs the deal titles to stand out more or everything else to blur a lot more / not to stand out as much.

  • I'm liking the wider navigation bar at the top on mobile. The old one was way too narrow. Every time I tried to press on it previously, I'd hit the ad just below it.

Titles Bolder + Lighter Colours - too dark now, brooding and unwelcoming.

Just learnt Scotty is the moderator and assuming owner of OzB. It's his site, he can do what he bloody well likes with it.

If I want a pretty website and no bargains I'll go to apple.com.au

Guess there is a Firefox browser Add On to customise every webpage you visit to be in the colours you like.

    • Oh yeah, screw the rest of us. Hey, Zuckerberg owns Facebook, he can do whatever he wants to it, forget the billions of users. Hey, the government owns this country, let them do whatever they want to this land, ignore the people who live on it.

      • +3

Uh. Yeah. That's what happens in the real world. You been living under a rock for a while?

    • +4

Yes but we are what generates his income

without us, this site could be like myspace…

      dead!!!

  • +2

Why can we no longer see how many new comments have been added to a deal????! Or click on the amount of comments??! Lost a good feature there

It still works, grey bubble is how many total and there's the usual orange [xx new] next to those with new comments since I last viewed the deal.

Of the 4 in the pic, I guess the top two had no comments when I originally viewed them so they are both showing the same amount of total comments and new comments. The 3rd one down I haven't viewed at all so it's showing as a new deal with 4 comments but no new ones and the 4th one must have had 8 comments when I last viewed it.

      • Oh I see. I'm on mobile though and you certainly can't see the "new" comments amount

  • I find it easier to read and navigate on my phone. Can't speak for PC.

  • Hey mods, on the live page for ease of scanning, why not swap the subject and type columns, i.e.

    Deal Some enticing title

    instead of

Some enticing title … and far far on the right: Deal

Seems obvious that the variable length field should be put in the last column.

As for the icons, the comment icon is too dark, a solid blob of black. Why not an outline black speech balloon?

  • Starting to look like reddit with orange

  • "Did the look and feel of OZB site is changed?"

Can we get someone to edit the grammar above please?

  • +1

looks like scotty has changed the font and logo…

  • +4

Bold the titles please. We can live with the rest of it.

  • That's better on the eyes

  • For me it's certainly harder to read on my mobile device. If there was an option I'd revert.

  • +1

I prefer old OzBargain, the new one should be called SquintBargain.

  • +3

Bold fronts made the title heading stand out..
Easier to see the bargain titles..

Also color is dark and makes you less happy when you see..

It's like they are trying make this side look like the new batman…

    http://cdn.sneakhype.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/sad-batm…

  • +2

    Why scotty why?
Your only choice in colors were leave it normal orange or dull orange..

Why change what was not broken?
Also when you make a change it, it should it improve, not make it worst…

    -Harder to read bargain titles
    -dull dark color,

    http://resources.news.com.au/files/2014/05/19/1226922/814188…

It's like what they did at microsoft
    -windows 7 = beautiful looking
    to

Windows 8, flat colors, dull look

  • Media queries could fix the disparity between looking great on mobile and terrible on desktop.

  • I like this style better, it looks neater, but the old style had a better feel. Shouldn't really matter, they're both fairly similar. More so focused on the bargains than the design.

  • I agree with the rest that it's not good. In fact it looks like someone who's eaten too many Jaffas threw up over the old site. I don't come here because it's pretty though. So as much of a pity as it is to see a site I like turned into this pile of dung I'll keep coming.

  • As has been said, the topics of the deals need to be bolder, easier to read.
My pet peeve is grey text that is hard to read (wtf is with that?), if this site ever went that way, -1 person on here.

The new title fonts on the deals page are making my eyes feel all weird. It's taking a lot longer for me to skim through all the deals because the titles of each of them don't stand out, so it's harder upon first glance to differentiate between titles and descriptions. Everything just blends together like a wall of text.

This new design has made readability and legibility worse - two of the most important, yet often forgotten, principles of good web design.

  • +2

In case anybody is interested, I created a chrome extension to fix up some of the issues, as well as removing pagination from deal pages. You can find it here: OzBargain Enhancement Suite

    • Looks good!

  • Also when you click on a deal why doesn't it open in a new tab ¿¿ seems obvious to me

    • Depends on your preference.

Go to My Account - Edit

Make sure Deals open in new window is checked.

    • If you use a mouse.. Click the scroll wheel on a link, it will open a new tab :)

I am not seeing any new posts unless I have opened the thread previously.

If I have read all the posts, how would I know if I have opened the thread?
It should have been done like previously, so that one can know that they have opened the thread.

    • Same - appears as though I have read all comments on all deals when I have only read all comments on some of the deals…

  • +1

its average, change it back, (profanity)

  • looks too clean and somehow messy at the same time

  • It would be nice for some acknowledgement from the Moderators.
Is there a problem with running a mobile version and a desktop version (the old style) of this site, along side each-other? I understand that competition-wise, mobilising(sic) this site matters for eyeballs and getting the groove-on for the hipsters out there, on their bitten-fruit mobile devices. Commercial sites seem to offer both, but do I understand that it can be difficult to offer both.

      Hi!

  • I also did want to say people do care about things they love, so I am not wanting a hate vibe to come through. That is why there is so much discussion and the other forum comments etc., show this. It is good that people do want to contribute to a community like this. So hence the comment above.

        Thank you

        ahhh…. you're new here….

I have been cautious about joining.
I read the site long before joining.
I have been careful, because of Trolls.
It just goes to show, from your comments, that people are quick to judge…

I do contribute to other peoples' postings or report the experience I have had.
        I feel confident doing this.

  • I wish I could down-vote/neg the site

Are the New Forum Topics fonts smaller?

    • Something looks different about them but I can't figure it out.

Personally, I find them harder to read.

    • I thought I was going crazy - I noticed the font change for the forum topics this morning, too, but noone had mentioned it in any site discussion threads or in this thread. Glad someone else mentioned it. lol

I personally don't mind it, but it's odd how the font change isn't consistent through the site lol.

    • Are the New Forum Topics fonts smaller

Title of the forum topics? No.

Other meta data (posting time, number of comments, forum posted in)? Yes. That's to actually make it consistent with deal listing on the sidebar.

      • +3

I like how you bolded your reply, makes it easy to notice ;)

  • +6

Having had a few days to digest it all, I feel the deal titles need to be slightly shorter (smaller) font, and definitely bold. They sometimes get lost amongst the other text on the screen, rather than standing out as they should.

  • +2

almost a month after the changes and it still sucks.

    • Yes still hate the new look.
Old style killed this squinty nonsense.

  • Scotty, PLEASE PLEASE go back to your old fonts. I initially thought the site looked slicker and may have been a good move, but there is just no comparison. It feels like it's lost some of its uniqueness, charm & warmth. Cheers.
