I dislike the changes very much too…

At first, I thought my browser got corrupted…

The new 'style' reminds me of what sites looked like 5 years ago…

    • -1

I agree but you will get used to it.

  • +7

Did someone die? My opinion, you are overusing the colour black.

    • +2

I agree. There's too much black.

      • +11

The problem we have now is…

"Once you go black you'll never go back"

  • It really hurts my eyes to read. Honestly, I will probably stop using Ozbargain if this stays as I already have a headache from reading this thread.

    • suuure, let's monitor logins from that username and ghost accounts from the same IP :)

  • Also think the max-width is too wide, this makes the left column seem unbalanced/out of alignment.

Looks better going from 1280 back down to 1150ish.

    • Stylish change:

      div.wrap {
      max-width: 1150px !important;
      }

  • +7

Please change it back to how it was ! It's a mess right now!!!

  • +4
    • I could not have said it better myself :). People will always, always resist to change.

  • The deal headers on desktop seem to have been changed again now, seems better. Although I preferred the old design, readability must be top of the priorities on these new changes. Hopefully more tweaking may improve the new design.

  • I first thought the color was wrong (dark) but overall I like the changes.
    The site feels more crisp.
    Nice work.

  • Well I don't have as big a problem with the font as others do. I like the flatter look. I think the hover and selected colours for the main drop down menu are a bit off, though. Especially when compared to the yellow hover colour of the sub-menus like Forums.

    • I think they may have fixed the titles on the front page a little. It's improved since when the first changes went live.

  • +9

    Bring back catch bargain!!!!!!!

    • +2

I liked the colour scheme on that version.

  • +3

    Yuk

  • +1

Why does the site says Tomorrow for all the deals that start today, 5 Sep?
    Example: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/159879

    Is this a bug?

    • Also looks like you can't see the expiry date straight away?

(Unless that's what it's miscalculating, being only two days away).

  • +3

    Gross. Bring back old site

  • +7

Deal titles are very hard to read - please revert!

  • +3

Too much whitespace, too thin fonts.

  • +9

Not a fan at all, sorry Scotty.

I can feel my eyes straining to read things which were very easy to read previously.

    :(

  • +6

I HATE the new FONT!!! It's like slenderman, thin, long and stretchy, no likey

  • +2

Wait - does everyone else have grey borders surrounding every page like mine (screenshot), or is it just my browser being zoomed out?

Is this how others are seeing the page, alternatively? (if I zoom out)

    • yeah everyone has the grey borders.

      • Nope, not me. No grey borders unless I maximise on a 29 inch ultra widescreen monitor. I'm also not getting the long stretchy font. Using Chrome.

    • I don't get the grey borders, which is good because I hate grey more than I hate black.

      • Grey borders are visible past 1300 pixels wide. It will not be visible if the window is smaller than this size (I think).

    • +2

Grey borders? Well mine is about 10x worse than yours http://i.imgur.com/vkNPsS0.png That's at 100% zoom, so normal…

      • LOL

      • You using a 2500 x 1600 monitor? That might be why. And I'm jealous.

  • +4

    Its horrible

  • +1

Phew.. that's good. I thought my computer was infected

  • +1

I liked the old theme better.

  • +5

I like the new theme, only thing I would change is make the deal headings bold.

  • Yeah, old theme where the deal titles were nice and bold were better. Otherwise, I could learn to live with it.

  • -1

    I like it. :3

  • +1

All that screen resolution potentially available, and I'm squinting trying to read the deal details due to horrible fonts

    img

Click on the image above to see what your site now looks like from firefox at 1680x1050 at the default zoom.

  • Those with Font issues have you looked at ClearType in Windows to see it that helps?

  • +3

    Why not have both?

Would be nice if we could choose which theme we want to use in our account settings.

  • +3

The colors are too dark which is uninviting. Font is a bit thin as well.

Changing the theme when users were perfectly happy with the previous arrangement is not going to make OzBargain 'in' at all, much rather the opposite instead as the site is less accessible.

  • +4

    It's terrible.

  • +1

I like the new theme! Fair bit of haters of it tho..

  • +6
    • +7

I think the top/header bar looks a lot nicer now being darker and with the dark grey, and the other improvements are also nice. The only thing I find to be a backwards step is having all the titles less bold - they just blend in with all the other text on the page now, rather than popping out as they used to.

I dig the change to the comments icon (black speech bubble). Looks sexy now. lol

      • +3

I like the bolder text in the title in the old version, but the new dark grey with the orange is heaps better. More contrast which is nice. Of course the contrast is also the reason the bold text looks better.

        • I'm using this from goosmurf and it's perfect now :D

    • +8

The visual hierarchy was stronger in the previous design. The post titles were the strongest visual element (as they should be), now they are second or third behind that dark sub-nav.

If the main goal of the site is for visitors to quickly skim through deals and pick out ones they are interested in, then the new design does nothing to help achieve this. I'd love to know the reasoning behind the each of the changes and how they contribute to a better experience.

    • +1

My eyes are immediately drawn to the old design on the right. Everything on the deals page stands out much easier.

  • +10

    I'm feeling nauseous

  • -1

New format looks really good especially on the mobile site everything is so much bolder and easier to navigate

  • -1

People saying they're going to stop using the site because of the changes are being way over dramatic.

Honestly, I didn't really even notice the changes until I saw this thread. Eyes on the bargains people!

  • +1

I think the problem is with Firefox? It is adding grey bars both sides further squeezing what was an already very narrowed down font. I wish I'd taken a screen dump. The first version was so hard to read. It's better now, but grey bars still there.

  • I personally like the new changes. 'Flat' style items are what most websites are like these days. I'm a web developer myself and i believe that this new look the site is taking on is great.

  • +3

I liked the old one .

  • +2

I feel ill looking at the new font. Ctrl Z please?

  • +2

    It makes me dizzy

  • +5

Screenshots of the new design, tested in 60 different web browsers

    http://imgur.com/a/w34yh#0

    • +2

      Looks good in Links!

      • +1

        Looks better in Lynx!

PS. I thought you'd written it wrong, turns out there is a Links AND Lynx web browser…

        • +1

I wonder if anyone uses it. Could be interesting for low spec devices like the Rpi.

        • @scrimshaw: I used to use w3m a lot to browse OzBargain and IMHO better than Links and Lynx because of proper frame/iframe/table support.

  • +2

I don't think this is acceptable . change back

  • Horrible

But if it makes life simpler on all platforms……???

  • +2

It's just not good to look at for too long, I don't think it's just that I'm not used to as I've endured many site changes and my eyes haven't had such a problem looking at them as this.

  • +3

Looks like a bloody dog's breakfast in Firefox…

  • Glad I'm not the only one puzzled by the new change. Was there a dev post for the new changes?.

Regardless I guess there's not much we can do now, given it's changed. As long as the site is still available in some form I'm happy :).

  • +2

Not so pleasant on the eyes anymore…neg vote

  • +1

    meh looks pretty awful imo.

the spaces between deals are way too small, should make the dividing lines bolder or something

  • +1

Bring back the old style & fonts, leave redesign to actual graphic designers/typography & UX specialists (no offence intended).

    • I kindda liked it

  • +1

I would really prefer a thicker font. It makes it easier to read.

Consider something similar to the guidelines of the polymer project, which has thinnish fonts and yet remains fairly easy to read ?

    http://www.polymer-project.org/components/paper-elements/dem…

  • That site you linked to meatgasm was pure pleasure to my eyes after reading the last 10 posts here :)

We should all type in bold as I certainly prefere it.

  • +9

Just lodged a Paypal dispute to get my money back.

  • +1

I thought it was only me that noticed the OzBargain site fresh look, then here I saw the tgread about it. :d

P.S: in Mobile mode. Haven't looked at desktop version.

  • +6

Bring back the old theme, please.

    • +2

I agree. The new font doesnt look as good as the old one. :/

  • I much prefer this new style

  • +2

This coincided with the chrome mobile update. Maybe that's why it feels so akward today???

  • -4

Boo (profanity) hoo. Im so glad I forgot my password and had to reset it and realised I can disable off topic threads.

Really? You can't see the text anymore? You prefer the bold headings? Go cry because sureeeee everyone wants to hear your complaints.

Why don't don't you be thankful with what you have and actually complain when there is a real issue.

Makes me feel like i'm at a 16 year old's birthday party and she didn't get the right colour insert ointless bullshit here when I see all the cries on this thread.

Am I the only one who feels this way?

  • I actually like the changes, except for:
    * Font
    * OzB logo too big on mobile site

  • I thought the black bar was notifying me of new bargains being posted or some such. Is anyone reminded of the whole iOS fiasco? Where they changed 3D icons to flat and cartoonish ones?

    • That's not a fiasco.. Just people opposed to change, not being given customisation options and not liking how the icon set looks.

Some might argue that the flat and cartoonish icons looked better since they could identify apps easier by it's shapes and colours, others say there was a lack of detail and lacked '3d pop'. It's a purely subjective matter as to which visual style is better, but it's apparently a trend now to have the UI as simple and uncluttered as possible.

  • +4

What was the thought process behind the changes?. Audio commentry would be nice.

Was it change for change sake?

  • +3

Please change the font and bring back the bold headings. It's very hard to read.

I checked the zoom and my browser settings because it's so bad thought the page was broken!

  • I usually run with font override selected in Firefox anyway, because most of the sites I visit use sans serif, and I prefer serif, so the only thing that concerns me about the new look is the lack of bold for the thread titles.

  • +1

I like the flatter look, the old design was feeling a bit dated. That said, my criticisms:

    • I don't think the darker look suits the site. It looks nice in and of itself, but I don't think it fits what I see as a bright and welcoming community/atmosphere, it's too cold.
    • I think the overall design could be more "connected". That is, to me the different sections of the page (title, content, sidebar) seem too separate, like they've been designed in isolation and stuck next to each other.

This is coming from a guy who knows nothing about web design though :P

You're on the right track, keep going guys!

  • Thin fonts are all the rage these days.
The flat design is fine. but the font doesn't look right. Also, I think there are too many shades of orange. Why not stick to a default dark and light colour?

Lastly, generic avatar icons should also be changed to match the flat look.

  • I don't know why everyone is whining. It looks much more modern, this isn't 2008 anymore.

Don't worry, scotty. People just can't handle change. Even though this is OzBargain, where people should love getting change ;)

    • +4

This is supposed to be modern? It looks old and outdated.

  • +2

Sure people complain about change, thats natural, but I think in this case it really is a change for the worse.
Forgetting fashion of fonts etc the black/orange headers and thin blue fonts really do look like a garish mess IMHO.
Please simplify it. Please consider just changing it back. How about a vote as others have said?
It is very ugly and hard to read.

  • +5

Everything about the new site looks worse then the old. Change it back.

  • +3

open a poll and vote? does the site look shite +1

  • +2

+1 find it hard to read now with this font

  • I actually quite like the new font. Probably because I usually use the site on mobile phone browser. It looks great.

    • Same here. Looks great and I find it very easy to read. I like it.
