Comments / Feedback / Suggestions Thread

I've created this thread for general day-to-day comments/feedback/suggestions, because I think it's better then having to make a new thread every time you have got something little to ask/say.

    • The rules allow it, to call attention to particular deals within a broader promotion, etc. I think the system's fine the way it is, because it's not as if people are just posting random stuff that they themselves like from the sales, it's usually remarkable for one reason or another (e.g. a better than usual price).

I really appreciate people posting individual deals. That way I can get notifications when someone finds a particularly good deal, and comments on the deal won't be lost in the massive sea of comments in the original post.

  • If I've blocked a user and they comment on one of my comments, should I be receiving a notification (on both chrome and email)? I would much rather not.

    • Yes both notification & email should also be blocked. I'll fix that.

      • Thanks.

      • didn't even know you could block users… how do you do that?

        • Click on "hide" under their comments.

        • @scotty:

          oooh i didn't know that had a permanent option.. thanks! +'d :P

  • There was an incident today where a user, used another account.

Does this mean I am allowed to log into my family/friends accounts and post under their name?

    • Does this mean I am allowed to log into my family/friends accounts and post under their name?

You cannot post under a friend/family members account, if you did so by accident however then that is obviously fine (it's an accident), you should report the comment for deletion and re-post the comment under your own account.

      Thanks

    • Fixed up for you. If you are linking to a website, make sure you include the schema in the URL, i.e. add http:// in front of the hostname.

      • I tried that. Showed/Did same… at very least, during preview.

  • How do you find the "new" comments when using the mobile site? I dislike having to go through pages and pages of comments to find the 1 new or 2 new ones when I'm nowhere near a desktop :(

  • Question, is it possible to have a wiki of members' Pizza Mogul pizzas, or accounts? I've just been messing around with it, kinda fun lol
It all acts as a referral system, but there are sometimes coupons that work on Mogul pizzas, and would be good to help another member out I guess. Just like any referral system on here.

  • Just something simple, but when putting 'Good Guys' into the search bar, it doesn't suggest the store 'The Good Guys'… Neither does it on the search results page. Any way of taking words like 'the' out of suggestion searching or something? IE making the search system smarter to pick up on that simple thing :P

  • I would like to see cash back icons adjacent to the main link, if cash back is available for that store. and link directly to the cash back page when the icon is clicked.

    i.e.
    1 hour 27 min ago www.banggood.com (214 clicks) [c]
    on 17/11/2015 - 03:42 www.asos.com (7780 clicks) [c] [thumb] [Q]

maybe a user option to show or not.

    • Cashback links are already on the deal page, below "Go to Deal" button. It won't be on the listing page — I want to make the listing pages simpler, rather than more complicated.

  • In the private message screen please also enable the ellipsis (3 dots) on the bottom of each message to expand the message box as well as the plus sign on the top left hand side to expand the message. See this explanation image to see what I'm talking about.

    • Yes! It's so frustrating trying to open a pm on a mobile.

  • Hi mods

Can we have a 'i bought' button in every deal.

Would help to estimate the amount of savings for members signed in assuming everyone is honest.

    • I don't think it would work EC. The 'I Won' button in competitions occasionally seems to get pressed even when someone doesn't win :/

    • I think the clickthroughs to the URL are probably as good of a guess as you're likely to get for that. Having people come back to the site and report back on their purchases (which in lots of cases would be varying amounts, rather than a fixed saving per transaction) is likely a bridge too far.

You can see this in practice on a lot of those "coupon" websites like retailmenot. The data is next to useless.

  • How do you navigate to the pizza coupons page located here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/pages/pizza-coupons?

I can't find any links on the site to navigate to it.

Suggest adding it to the wiki section under "other pages" if it isn't listed anywhere else.

    • It was only linked on the front page tips, we haven't really done anything with that page on OzBargain as yet. I've linked it in our wiki now under the other pages heading and also added it into the fast food information page under bargain categories.

You can just go to https://www.ozbargain.com.au/pizza as a shortcut, it will redirect you.

      Thanks

      • Legend, Thanks!

Also often I've wanted to search for a specific word in a deal or forum that has multiple pages. For example If I want to search for posts about laptops from the current ebay deal I go CTRL+F search, find nothing, move to page 2, CTRL+F, find nothing, move to page 3 etc…

Would it be difficult to implement something that gives an option to display all content from all pages in the one page, like whirlpool's archive view? That would make life easier for searching for content.

    • Fantastic idea, this would be great! Would make long threads so much easier to quickly scan and read.

      • Yes this needs to happen. I suggested it on the previous page but no feedback. Maybe it'll be hard to implement but certainly not impossible.

        • Archive format is certainly possible.

          Edit 1/2/16: It is done

        • @scotty:

          Yes pleaseeee

        • @scotty:

If it's any incentive. Whirlpool's strategy seems to be to place an extra ad at the page breaks to help offset the server cost of showing the entire thread in 1 page. But they also have a mod responsibility to break up discussions that go on for ~100 pages or so into multiple threads to prevent archive pages from getting too epic.

  • Is there any way to search a specific deal for keywords (DSE deal for store name mentioned etc)
    EDIT: Oops its above

    • Add domain:dicksmith.com.au to your search if you want to limit to just deals from DickSmith.

      • Coolies thanks.
Also found if I do a google with the thread name and added search terms it finds it for me!
        Wonders of the internet :D

  • Bug (kinda) - I'm getting a 403 when clicking on a notification prior to it being removed by mods. Perhaps its worth changing the text?

This page is inaccessible because it has been moved or deleted

    maybe something like that>?

    • For 403 there should display the reason on the page, the reason left by the mod.

      • Reason appears on "New forum topics"

This forum topic is not published.
OzBargain Needs a Block out Function Like Gambling Services (Requested by OP)

But prior to the removal, the user replied to my comment, in which case i'm getting

        403 Access Denied
You do not have permission to access this page.

        if that makes sense.

        • Okay I see. Only URL for the unpublished node pages we give the reason. For the comment URL of the unpublished node it's not shown. I'll have that fixed.

          Thanks.

  • On another forum I visit (myswag.org) they have an option to "thank user" in the top left hand corner of their post/reply similar to OzB +- and tallies this. Recently someone on here provided some expertise in a post and I thought it would be good if I could thank them like on myswag. I have also read numerous comments of people +ing a deal for the effort put in by the OP which can artificially inflate how good the deal is with the effort put in or the popularity of the poster. This might then also be a way of being able to thank the poster for their effort without conflating it with the worthiness of the bargain as well as encouraging people to contribute.

    • I get what you mean, but i think it would be easier just to not vote, and say thankyou in the comments.

The positive threshold for the front page has actually increased over time, so the trigger happy positive voters shouldn't have a great effect.

    • I think that feature would be okay if it was done privately (button on the deal, only the OP can see the thank yous). But since the community is pretty active vocally I'm not sure it's worth it at this point. To piggyback off this idea, I hope this website never implements "points" à la Reddit's "Karma".

  • Hey Scotty, has anyone else mentioned an issue with the newsletter? Both yesterday and today I received the ozbargain daily newsletter and unsubscribed from both. Was very odd because I can't remember signing up.

    • I just checked the database backup from this morning and yes you were indeed subscribed. Other than the newsletter subscription settings in your account the other place where you can subscribe to newsletter is on the home page sidebar there's a bit "Subscribe" button. Did you click on that?

      • you can subscribe to newsletter is on the home page sidebar there's a bit "Subscribe" button. Did you click on that?

maybe it was an issue with the touch screen on the tablet, it's been a little laggy in the past few days.

I'll give it a few more days - it was probably that.

        Thanks scotty.

  • Using this deal as an example, looks like the voucher input part needs to allow for spaces in vouchers somehow. Maybe the divider should only be a comma, meaning spaces will work as spaces, not as separators?

  • I copied the following information from the Top Deals and other stats forum post.

Reports: 2110 (avg: 1 report every ~20 minutes)
    Deals Removed: 467 (2891 published) —- Forum Posts Removed: 44 (1024 published)

Everything Else (Other) seems to dominate the statistics for reports. Last month Everything Else came second after Duplicate. Shoud we have more categories when making reports? This would help members recognise more reasons for reporting threads and perhaps lead to identifying the type of report quicker. Maybe it would assist in quicker response times by the moderators(I could be wrong here given I don't know the whole story of how reports are dealt with). Perhaps a new category could be "Personal Information" and I am sure the moderators could come up with others once they review the stats from a few months.

    • Everything Else (Other) seems to dominate the statistics for reports.

Sorry if that wasn't clear. Those aren't reports, those are unpublish reasons for deals/forums.

Basically, I'm running the queries one by one. I'll see if Scott/Moocher can write me a query that produces a report (I'm an amateur SQLer).

      But for example for November:

      • Competitions are not bargains - 1
      • Merged with Existing Thread - 21
      • Amazon eBook posts are not allowed for reps - 4

So adding all of the rest up should end up at 97.

      • Okay. I probably got a bit confused as well.

I think what I'm asking for is more options/categories when we go to report either a post or a comment.

  • I think waiting 11 mins to be able to update/edit someone's post is too long, needs to be brought down to at least 5 mins

  • Is it possible to add a link directly to the your post/comment that someone replied to?

Someone replied to your comment on xxxx deal. When I click the popup link or from My Acconut>Comments link. It just jumps to the start of the deal and have to work my way through xx number of pages to find the reply. Instead of jumping directly to the reply that was posted.

Also still have an unpublished bookmark in my bookmarks folder that can't be deleted. Reason was that the deal was deleted and now I can't go to the deal to remove the bookmark.

    • The phrase "your comment" should contain a link back to your comment.

    • You can see this already, per nocure's comment. Go to your notification (bell) icon and click the your comment or if you want to check earlier replies you can click "See All" for your last 50 notifications.

      • Thanks. Didn't see that.

  • i'd be keen to see a charity "deals" page, mentioning websites and organisations that boost your donation with their own funds. i've seen some companies say they'll donate dollar for dollar during past natural disaster relief efforts for example. any ozbargainer would be stoked to make use of deals to double their charity budget at no extra cost. sorry if this already exists or has been brought up numerous times before.. merry xmas all!

    • Not sure about that but our Christmas Charity post will begin in the next couple of weeks. We'll probably do $10 per comment in the thread.

      2014 Christmas Charity Donations
      2013
      2012

  • suggestion: the deals marked as insufficient quantity, could we still see the OP instead of it being completely hidden? perhaps just disable the comments instead of making it completely unreadable.

    • They are usually moved to the forums.

      • +1

yeah sometimes they are which is great. but other times they're just completely greyed out

        like this one for example:

        This deal is not published.
Apple iPhone 6s 16GB for 1,005.80 after Reward (Insufficient quantity)

      • We almost always unpublish however if there is interest perhaps we can start a clearance/no stock thread which we can merge deals into the comments. Will discuss with mods to see if thats workable.

        • maybe keep it still greyed out but viewable/unvoteable?

  • +1

Hi, I posted this on the charity thread but it's probably been buried.

I think a lot of people will not vote for any charity with only a handful (<10 or so) votes when they see only the top 4 charities will be paid out. This leads them to just vote for one of the top ~6 charities, otherwise I believe they will not bother as they hold the mentality that their vote will "not count".

I'd like to propose an option for some polls (like the charity donation ones) in which the number of votes are hidden, and the order of options is perhaps scrambled. Results would only then be released after the voting closes. I think this would be a fair go for all charities, since some people will clearly just go with the mob mentality and vote for something that they feel will matter (since everyone else is doing it, why throw away a vote on a perfectly good charity that only has 3 votes?).

Opinions? I think this is why elections aren't in the form of a live poll :P I remember seeing a CGP Grey video also in which he describes this phenomenon, somewhat in this video (though it's 4 candidates in this case rather than 2).

Sorry for the mess of a comment, in a bit of a hurry to get out the door!

  • +1

Worthwhile having the Twitter feed get posted after say 10mins of the deal being up? Give the mods time to cull spammy posts or what have you, keep it off the feed?

    • Good idea.

  • thanks to JSQUARED won a airbnb voucher, cheers for posting. But do you guys think we could click " I Won" even when its closed? i tried and it says you didnt comment so cant mark as i won.

    • You need to make a comment as per the instructions. :)

      • hmmmm, i did try, but it said closed and no more comments. Now i revisited it, i can comment and press "I WON".

        • Yes, so clicking I won opens up the comments (a message should have popped up). You then need to make a comment and then click "I Won".

  • Has there been any suggestion for a "Personal" sub-forum for Dating & Relationships? I think having it secluded from "Everything Else" could categorise the off-topic forum a bit better.

    • I don't see a need to actually categorise the off-topic forums — they are already off-topics and don't have enough discussions to warrant a separate forum. Dating & Relationships was only a standalone forum because of the April Fools this year.

      • Yep I agree, I didn't think there would be enough traffic to implement it. All good

  • Have you thought about making a short elearning course based on deal posting rules? Would save the mods and power users time and effort.
Have the course pop up when a new user attempts to post their first deal. Make it pop up again if their next deal needs editing.

    • I don't think there's a need for that since there's a pretty big list on the right side of the submission page. I could only assume something as in depth as a short course for posting etiquette would be time consuming to create. There's still going to be issues with submissions even if that were a thing.

      • Yes the info is there but there are a lot of people that don't check it. I read the new deals area often and there are a lot of deals removed and even more edited by mods. If there was a requisite that people did a course instead of being told to read a bunch text, there might be more effort put into submitting a deal.

        • We would love to have a Udemy course for OzBargain but the simple fact is if some people won't bother reading text..even up to 1 paragraph, then we have no chance for them doing a course.

There probably are things we can do to help users on the submit deals page by improving the UI.

  • Competitions - the whole 'entered/I won" seems to confuse at least 1 person per month or so. Could we change it to "Mark as entered" / "mark as winner". Or similar?

    • Yes! I came here to comment about the 'I won' confusion in the competitions section.

I've noticed that it's happened a few times this month:
      AllPhones Comp,
      Sony Xperia Comp
      'Homes to Love' comp

      • Thanks Spackbace & Katie2014.

The wording was changed from 'I won' to 'Mark as winner' a couple of days ago. Hopefully that helps.

        • Thanks Hamza23 :)

        • Cheers Ham :)

  • when im browsing the site on my nexus 5 in chrome i come across optus advertisements
they take up the entire width of my screen and about half the height
if i start the action of scrolling (ie; touch with finger and flick) ON the advertisement (which is sometimes unavoidable due to its size!) the browser will NOT scroll, and when i lift my finger it registers as a click and then launches a new tab as though i clicked on the ad
it would be nice if i could touch to scroll on the ad and it does not register as a click
    screenshot http://imgur.com/IFL1vEg

    • I have blocked optus.com.au from the ads for now. Those are 300x250 ads which are common. However I think the problem is that the ads implementation might be problematic where it registers the touch where it should have ignored the swipe (for scrolling).

  • What do you think of say a drop down arrow or an auto drop down around the title of a deal showing a few more of the deals in a post without having to open it?

    • Do you have an example?

  • Just a thought.
This month my end-of-day routine was: binging some netflix series until 5AM and browsing through eBay looking for some good deals before going to bed. It was all fine for a couple of days.

Yesterday I binged and eBayed all the same but I ended it by browsing through OzBargain.
Strangely somehow I could feel my eyes trying hard to keep up moving from left to right.

This morning I came to realise that this was caused by the location of the image on the right.
I'm sure tonnes of ideas were put into designing this website aesthetically.

I couldn't find any discussion related to this (or maybe not hard enough).

I've made a few samples of relocating the image of the deal on the homepage to the left:
    http://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/122158/36153/2015.12.30…

    What do you think?

I personally like #2 USER/VOTE | IMAGE | DEAL and thus I am currently making a tampermonkey script that will relocate the image of the deal to this position and see what happens when I go to bed later.

    • Personally not a fan, and has been discussed before. The thumbnail is really just a basic preview, and shouldn't be the main focus. Putting it on the left makes it more of a focus point (as most would be reading left to right), and would be more frustrating.

It just might feel that way if you're going from a page with images on the left that you want to look at (eBay for instance), then going to the different format on here.

  • +1

I wonder if we could have a way of highlighting the word 'Free' in a title, like we do the $$s..? Make it Green or something, to go with the current Freebie tick.

Not sure if there's some way of changing the formatting so it only recognises a free price, and not just 'Life Free or Die Hard' for example!

    • Highlight free in title only when freebie box ticked.

  • Have a great new years guys.

Can you collapse a comment and all its replies to go to the next comment?

    Just a thought. Thanks

    • Not doable on mobile, but on desktop when the mouse cursor hovers over a comment, there should be a small open/close icon on the left of the profile image of the commenter. Click on that to collapse the comment + replies.

  • +1

It's too easy for people to make invalid downvotes. Wiki is pretty clear that down vote covers only certain reasons and specifically does not cover votes such as "SPAM" or "This is marketing” (advertising).

For example, this vegan documentary thread (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/228392) I see 15 downvotes. Some reasons given are "SPAM". But nobody has removed those negative votes.

Either the reasons for down-voting should be expanded to allow for political criticism of deals, or it must be made more difficult to cast an invalid vote.

Simply require a negative voter to select the reason for the vote. The list can include both appropriate and inappropriate uses of the vote. When the voter has selected an invalid reason, they can be told the reason it's invalid. For example, if they want to down vote for "SPAM", let them change the negative vote into a report for spam. If they want to downvote due to missing information in the title, simply inform them that it's not a reason to downvote and even populate the comment field with a comment like "This post does not have a title. I suggest the title " and let the person who wanted to cast the invalid vote finish the comment.

    • Please see voting guidelines. The guidelines attempt to cover situations where the moderators will step in to revoke votes however where there is a grey area the moderators have a hands-off approach.

      • +1

Sorry, I have no idea what you mean. Im not referring to gray area votes. The guidelines say "Any negative vote that falls into any of these reasons will be revoked by a moderator." I see plenty of votes falling in these categories and they get removed by moderators, including on the thread I mentioned, and I think they are easily avoidable by providing more information to someone who wants to vote. I think many people who click vote don't have a clear idea of what is a vote or what is a report, but it would be simple to provide them more information at the vote/report stage. I'm not saying to make it very difficult to vote/report, just make sure people know what they are doing so they don't feel annoyed when their negative votes for spam or "not a bargain" are knocked back.

Edit: The popup with checkboxes idea is just a suggestion for improvement of the site but I don't think it is an urgent one, and I think it could probably be improved with more consideration.

        • I think it's one of those things where people should realise after their first neg vote gets revoked by a mod, especially as the reason, and hyperlink to the rules, replaces their comment. Then they get to click on the link, realise what they did wrong, and learn from it.

Besides that, I don't know what you want. Do you want to see a Ts & Cs section right before you submit a comment or post, with a check box acknowledging you've read and understand the rules?

        • @twocsises

Understand what you are saying, however something most probably don't realise is that we have a warning system for first time negative voters. As of December 2014 the following was added:

Add warning popup for first time negative vote so that users know that invalid and revoked negs attract a penalty of temporarily not being able to neg.

Users need to physically close this popup window in order to proceed with the negative vote. It's a clear warning for first time negative voters to ensure they understand how to properly vote.

Furthermore as Spackbace points out, if a user does make a negative vote and it's revoked they are once again notified and linked to the guidelines via the notification system (and again thereafter everytime they have negative vote revoked). Note that if a user has 3 negative votes revoked within a 90 day period they are temporarily unable to negative vote further until that period passes.

I agree it is very easy for those voters to justify their negative vote with just a few words, I think we have as much education in place for those who want to follow the guidelines to have the means to do so.

        • @hamza23: Pretty sure I never saw that popup! Good that it's there I guess.

My opinion is different than yours since I see quite a few invalid votes popping up every day.

          The guidelines start off:
          * No explanation of the vote
          ** “Not a bargain.”

For example, i just scroll back to the first post with some negative votes. Obviously, we will see ones that don't follow the guidelines, OB being OB. This one "Not a bargain." https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/228514#comment-3346168

The guidelines on voting really include this, are users like me supposed to bother reporting a word for word violation? This user obviously has interpreted "bargain" to be "best bargain". In that deal thread, it's not a problem because there's a cheaper bargain, so we just ignore his useless comment and give him the benefit of the doubt that he doesn't actually mean what he typed.

This is just a random example. I don't mean anything about the specific poster, even though I'm sure he says the same exact thing on his other negged bargains. Just really annoying to me, and I guess I shouldn't be surprised that moderators like to see the invalid negative votes because otherwise there wouldn't be much to do.

        • +1

          @twocsies:

because otherwise there wouldn't be much to do.

Oh wow… You did not just say that…!

        • @Spackbace: Sorry, the mods do a great job here! I actually have no complaints.

Like I said it's not urgent matter, just a suggestion. Also, if it doesn't take much time for mods and doesn't irritate many people, it's obviously even less urgent than I thought.
