Updates, Top Deals, Comments, Forum Posts, Members of The Month + Other Stats [August & September 2017]

I've been on holiday for most of September so here are 2 months of stats for you. I finally got to use some of the bargains on our Singapore site (CheapCheapLah), found some more Booking.com deals from HUKD's French site Deal Labs and got to grab a coffee with the team at UK bargain site HotUKDeals.

Three 1000+ voted deals recently:

If you thought there were a lot of Gearbest posts, you aren't seeing things. The store had 130 deals posted in September with Amazon 2nd at 56. In August, 53 Gearbest deals were posted. Other than them offering cheap deals, it seems everyone has figured out that you can ask the rep for a cheap deal which members are happy to pass on to others. Having a look at bargain sites around the world, you'll see Gearbest's cheap deals on their front pages as well. Let's see how long they can keep it up as Dealextreme managed to do a few years ago.

Additionally, OzBargain went viral in the Arabic world which has brought many new users from Morocco and nearby places. Google Translation:

after publishing the post found that the source of the site ozbargain, which after I search for and browse I found that it is an Australian site where users are attracted to offers of paid programs to download free of charge through activation surrogates legally. Also, there are vouchers, discounts and many things you will find in this site that is very important for every user who likes junkies

So if you see some odd Zapals or Gearbest posts (like this one) from new users, this may be the reason. As of posting we already have 2917 new users in October which is ontrack to be the biggest new monthly member drive ever. There ya go, freebies bringing nations together.

Next month it's our 11th birthday and we're going to have some meetups to giveaway some t-shirts. Stay tuned.

Winners from last month:

  • Thespottedcow for posting the deal of the month as well as the most voted deal so far, eBay 18% off Site Wide that also almost killed OzBargain. Right now it had +2,551 votes, 27,343 click throughs and almost 1,000 comments. It got to the OzBargain front home in 4 minutes 50 seconds, and reached +100 votes in less than 13 minutes. The record would be difficult to beat. 20% off eBay site-wide perhaps?

  • gnv9 won again for her contribution to the competitions, including the most clicked comp. She also posted 422 competitions last month (7 were in the top 10). gnv9 also happened to post the 2nd most voted deal last month. Thanks for the cheese!

  • nocure for posting the most number of deals in September. He posted 53 of them with +60.1 vote average, most popular being ½ Price Connoisseur Ice Cream Tubs 1L $5 @ Woolworths.

  • Willy Orwontee for posting a useful comment. Many popular comments are often up-voted because others agree with humorous remarks, but many aren't actually helpful. Willy Orwontee posted this useful comment sharing the search link for the eBay selected-store sale and was 3rd most voted comment last month (behind this and this). Yup. Do vote the comments that you agree/disagree with, but please also up-vote those comments that are actually useful/helpful.

I thought it had been a bit of a slow month but apparently not.

and got to grab a coffee with the team at UK bargain site HotUKDeals

Where's the pics or did they ask for a bribe? 😂

    • +3

Well, Pepper who owns HUKD, Deallabs and a bunch of other bargain sites are based in Berlin but they have a tiny office in Bateman's Row which houses 3 staff. The rest either work remotely or are in Berlin. So wasn't much to take a picture of, if you check out the streetview. Also my phone broke (lint plus cheap cables), was getting over gastro (playing with friend's kid) and I had a train to catch after lunch (Eurostar Snap, £30 train to Paris but they dont tell you time until 48hrs before).

      • +1

I knew HUKD had Dealabs, but not THAT many! Can't travel without getting sick.

  • +2

All that info and no mention of me anywhere. (Just joking). Was also surprised to read there were so many deals from amazon this year, I didn't think that had a lot of presence in Australia just yet.

    • +3

I suspect it might be to do with exchange rates partially. This was definitely the case for Amazon UK deals last year.

      Amazon UK

  • Thanks again neil and I hope you enjoyed your holiday :)

Interesting about OzB going viral in Morocco

Additionally, OzBargain went viral in the Arabic world(igli5.com) which has brought many new users from Morocco and nearby places. Google Translation:

"after publishing the post found that the source of the site ozbargain, which after I search for and browse I found that it is an Australian site where users are attracted to offers of paid programs to download free of charge through activation surrogates legally.

Also, there are vouchers, discounts and many things you will find in this site that is very important for every user who likes junkies"

    I love the Google translation!

  • Let's see how long they can keep it up as Dealextreme managed to do a few years ago.

Here's a random unnecessary stat for you. DX started dropping off the scene when their owner sold up and started Fasttech. Unfortunately FT never really took off either :/

    • Loved DX, was a customer there before discovering ozbargain :) not sure how I discovered it but once I did the random shit started getting delivered!

I daresay 90+% of Aussie GeekBuying/GearBest/Banggood accounts are due to Ozbargain lol

      • Yup I knew about DX for years prior to OzBargain. No idea how I found that one either.

Dunno about the others but OzB is only a fraction for Geek overall. The statistics however from my deals are fascinating. I'm sure neil would love to see those stats.

  • I wish some of the main stores here would disclose what % of their traffic comes from OzBargain and what percentage of that traffic ends in a sale (I imagine there's a lot of looksee traffic). The results could be really interesting.

"Attribution" has always been a difficult subject in ecommerce and marketing. I can imagine even big retailers with all their ad-tech have difficulty figuring how much sales are originated from OzBargain, let along smaller shops.

      • Browsers do not necessarily send referrer information to the landing website.
      • We automatically remove Google Analytics tracking tags from URL on the deal submission form.
      • We do not send the logged in users through affiliate system.
      • Many users use cashback sites so the sales get attributed to them.
      • Flow-on effects where deals get propagated to other sites (social media, other people's blogs, etc) which then generate sales.

In short, I am sure the result would be interesting if the stores can share their sales figure, however I doubt the measurement can be accurate.

Oh just realised we are 491 deals away from 200,000 deals.

304 now. Means it is likely to happen in the middle of this week.
