What Cheapo China Purchase Impressed You?

I'm quite happy with the air mouse thingy. For less than $7, was shipped fast and it's really handy. I can use it for presentations. Amazing value! Can't believe big brands haven't adopted this gadget.

Xiaomi Pistons for $20 originally impressed me then i bought KZ ED9 for $12 insanely good value

Those Cree torches are awesome for the price.

How are the KZ ED9s? I picked up KD ZS3s and have been loving them.

      • no love for zs5 ? only 24 from gearbest

      • +1

Most of KZ IEMs are amazing value. It's a matter of preference. On the con side, early batches of new releases have inconsistent QC issues.

ED9 is well worth the money, versatile, fully metal body with good swappable "filters" for less or more bass. Probably not as bassy as ZS3.

It is kind of heavy, so really suitable for moving around, certainly not for gym or running.

One issue I have with KZ is that they are extremely ++addictive++. IMHO, worse than Eneloops in this aspect.

        • Interested in these KZ IEMs. I am a bit of a basshead but would like some detail in the mids/highs too. Which KZ would you recommend?

        • @Xastros:
Disclaimer: I am by no means an audiophile. Just someone who bought a few IEMS to play with. Ok, more than a few.

I would guess KZ ED4, ZS3 and ZSE might be worth trying. There could be some others that I haven't tried. You can find out more at Head-fi which has a long, long, long thread on KZ IEMs.
And ED4 is normal straight IEM, ZS3 is over the ear and ZSE is probably usable in both.

These are the bassier ones that I have. ( Gearbest has the ZS3 and ZSE on sale regularly )

ZS3 is detachable, but uses KZ specific cables, and probably cost around ED4 + ZS3 ?

          Enjoy :-)

        • @VFM: Thanks! I think I'll be wasting a lot of money on these IEMs which I don't need haha.

      • +1

The ED9 are awesome the swap able filters are good too when i dont want as much bass.
i ordered the ZS3 as well which arrived yesterday but so far they hurt like hell and i cant get them to fit right so it doesn't sound like it's properly in my ears.

This is the first Over ear cable earphones ive had though so ill keep trying them but so far they hurt even after 10 minutes use.

Reddit recommended the KZ ATZ, got the ATR from ebay, which looks the same and decent too

How do other models compare to the ATZ/ATR?

    • piston for 20 ?

even proHD can be grabbed at 17 in recent sales.

    • Thanks I purchased the KZ ED9 after seeing this.. my Xiaomi pistons have seen better days.. twisted cable thats coming apart and many ear wax cleaning procedures :P

    • Is there anything similar to the KZ's that aren't in-ear? That are earphones instead.

      • Not KZ but if you're looking for one of the best earbuds under $20, the VE Monks Plus

The Port of Melbourne cheapo china purchase was a really good buy

Cant go past Sam Dastyari, for 30 silver pieces he sold out Australia and flew the Chinese flag.

    • +20

I said China purchase, not purchased by China

      • +4

        Fair point :)

      • -1

        purchase means purchase Herr Drumpf!

    • +17

I think Sam is a bargain compared to:

Andrew Robb our ex-trade minister sold the Port of Darwin to China, and then retired to be paid $780,000 a year by the company he sold it to.

Our foreign minister who got purchased by China for $420,00 through her "Julie Bishop Glorious Founddation"

      • +1

I just said he was a bargain.
Never would dare to claim he was smart in anyway hehe

      • +4

        … Sam Dastyari … Andrew Robb …

Absolute sell-out dogs the both of them.

I'd add that landed twat from Adelaide … what's his name … joined Huawei as they were trying to infiltrate our core network.

One belt, one road. Yeah, the Tibetan's thought that sounded ok too at first.

EDIT: Alexander Downer!! I sometimes suppress traumatic memories…

  • Geyiren E260 HUD $42 shipped from China, awesome digital display for my Mazda3 Maxx (was never going to fork out $30k+ for the GT so I could get the inbuilt HUD)

    • got a video review? How is it in bright direct sunlight and does it do the infinite focus?

      • It's actually awful in direct sunlight and invisible with polarised sunnies, I wrote the above after trying it out at night for the first time :-( if you Google E260 HUD video you can see someone's works reasonably well in daylight, but I couldn't recommend based on my experience.

There are some LCD readouts (not HUD) on banggood but I'm going to cut my losses at $42 and stick to the stock analogue gauge for now…

        • +1

I have the new CX9 and the HUD is perfect in all conditions including bright sunlight. The only exception is wearing polarised sunnies where it is only just visible (although you can probably turn up the brightness if you could be bothered when wearing polarised sunnies).

Wasn't sure I would get used to the HUD but after a few months of use I now think it is an awesome feature. You basically never have to take your eyes off the road - you never have to look at the traditional speedo or the satellite navigation. The CX9 has pretty much perfected the HUD.

If Tesla has a single operational brain cell they should just copy the CX9 HUD for their binnacle-less cars.

    • Thanks for pointing these out! I had one on my Mazda 3 but have recently moved to a CX9 (due to kid explosion) - but didn't get the model with the display.

Didn't think I would miss it but I had sorta got used to it.

      • See above comment - I think HUDs are a great idea but need one that functions better in direct sunlight

      • Would of downsized if I had a kid explode on me.

Adjustable shower head holder, about $1.50. Has never failed and was perfect for our child's showers.

  • +6

Torches. I like those that take 3XAAA batteries. Regardless of how late it is, if I hear a noise I walk around the house with a really strong beam.

    • +2

Is there a reason you prefer AAA over AA torches as the batteries are less common and more expensive?

      • +2

3 batteries gives more power than 1 and because they are a bit smaller the torch fits easier on my keychain.

    • +2

Yup. Got a "Cree" purchased 3 years ago for $2 I think. Still working and is bright. The adjustable brightness is handy

    • +6

For a moment I thought a two by four beam. 😁

      • +3

If I find someone he will wish that is all I use.

Extremely surprised with the quality of the affordable Quadcopters. The Syma X5C was my first quadcopter. It flew so stable, I quickly learned to fly and was able to make some money from YouTube with its onboard video.

    • make money off youtube? As in via subscribers/views?

      • +10

It was for viewers watching my magpie attacking quadcopter video which got 100,000 views in 1 year:
        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gbi38QVUOsw&t=10s

The video was one of several experimental videos to test my new YouTube account. Back then there were not that many bird attack videos due to the price of the camera drones at the time (eg. DJI Phantom > $1000).

        • That was you???!!!

        • +5

@downero: Yep. That was me piloting the $50 Syma X5C outdoors with 1.5 months of flying experience.

        • I know that blowhole

        • +1

          @Dingus:

Yep. Can't forget the sight of Ol' Captain Cook's blowhole once you've seen it.

        • Ow, my ears

    • So there are lots of people searching for drone videos? About what?

    • How do you make money just by posting videos? Like someone wants to put an ad alongside your video?

      • +1

I think YouTube pays you if you get enough views and then they'll monetise your vids.

      • YouTube has an account setting that lets you switch on advertising with a mouse click. For me the only revenue I get is from viewers that watch the advertisement before my magpie video starts.

There are much more savvy content creators that have links, seek out sponsors (eg. GoPro ads) and sell merchandise. There's plenty of YouTube videos made by social media entrepreneurs on how they do it.

As this account was my first YouTube account all my uploads were intended as experimental videos to learn about YouTube uploading, video editing, descriptions, tagging, metrics (view duration, device platform, country of origin, etc). When my magpie video hit 50,000 views I wanted to learn the advertisement/payment system and switched on the AdSense feature which shows more metrics on click through, income, number of ads, value of ads, etc.

      • If you did not know you should check out https://socialblade.com/youtube/
As an example, it says PewDiePie's earnings are estimated to be between $571.7K - $9.1M p.a.
I have a channel and social blade say I earn $800 - $13K p.a. and I actually earn 1.8k - 2.4k a year, however, I think my CPM is quite low as all my viewers are from the 3rd world.

        • @owli Agree. What's your channel name? I am thinking about to start my own. I hope OZB community will show me some love to get my ball rolling.

        • @TurkishDelight: Ball rolling channel? I'd subscribe to that!

Oh hold on… what kind of balls you rolling?

        • @pegaxs: :D Hope you are just teasing.

    • +3

I love it to ! But did not make any money, my neighbour's wife is not photogenic.

    • How much $$$ did you make if you don't mind me asking?

      • +4

The magpie video probably has earned about 4x $100 paychecks from Adsense.

I could probably log into Adsense and view a grand total but I stopped caring after my third paycheck. Its pretty consistent for the advertising revenue, it calculates to approximately 45,000 - 50,000 views to earn $100. This is in line with the other content makers that share out their figures which can be Googled or YouTube.

I stopped logging into Adsense and Google Adsense a long time ago as I've moved onto other hobbies. I broke my quadcopter and lost interest. Plus haven't pulled out the action camera in over a year as its a pain to setup and remove gopro mounts just for 10 minute sessions.

        • Thanks, I once googled it just as a matter of curiosity and there was so much conflicting information I just gave up. I have no desire to "make content" I think the best vids are like your one, unplanned.

    Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro.

It made me realise I'm probably never going to spend more than ~200 on an Android device again because I can get 90% of the experience of an Android flagship device for $200. Actually the fingerprint reader on the Redmi works a shitload better than Sony so I'm probably at 100% when it comes to fingerprint reader experience … I'm assuming the Samsung's of this world can make a working fingerprint reader.

And since Xiaomi slavishly copies iOS with their MIUI Android skin it's like I'm getting 50% of an iphone experience as well (no Appstore apps and iphone status recognition).

    • +3

Got the Note 4x. Amazing phone for the money!!

      • +1

Agreed. Great functionality and battery life.

    • +3

Yup, I'm impressed with the Mi Max fingerprint scanner

      • +1

I use to agree with this until my Mi5s Plus camera died and no warranty help at all except a partial refund for an issue that should have been covered by warranty.

    • +2

Agreed. I used to play around with China Droids and they were OK but a little more buggy that one would find acceptable. But I have been using the Redmi 3S for close to a year and a half and can not fault the usability for the price.

I use a Telstra reseller and am very happy with the speed and coverage even without B28.

    • I have the RN3P with Lineage. It gets really slow sometimes, particularly opening Chrome. Messaging and stuff is fine, but yeah Chrome and Maps are super slow. Is MIUI better?

    • Yep. Except the camera. For that reason alone I'm looking at a flagship next time.

    • link?

    • link?

      • that particualr shaver is no longer sold on aliexpress.

however if I had to replace it then I'd go for this Kimei electric shaver for US$10.91 delivered

that was found with just a quick search. there may be cheaper ones available.

I have a kimei electric toothbrush (wireless charging) and it's pretty decent.

        • i bought the next one up, Kimei with 3-4 heads to attach (about $20), and the battery lasted one charge. i wont be buying their brand again.

        • @DarthAntz: replace the batteries.

        • @altomic: good suggestion, pulling it apart is always fun. it was this model. the headshaver attachment also didnt last a second go. sad face. Its a nose hair trimmer now.

        • +1

@DarthAntz: Yeah, ive always been sceptical of those types if heads. I dropped my shaver and some how the tab on the battery broke off. Disassembled and resoldered. Easy job.

My new Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum! Only just got it this week and we are in love! Only wish we got one sooner!

    • Good for carpets?

      • +2

YES! Our house is completely carpeted except for the kitchen and bathroom and that's what put us off robot vacuums for a long time, but it picks up so much dust and dirt off our carpet, I've never seen it cleaner. Our rubbish bin is now full of all the dust it picked up. Not sure if that means our current vacuum is terrible or this one is amazing, but I love it. So incredibly smart how it maps everything out- and we have furniture and dining room tables and stools and coffee tables and it just gets underneath and around everything and still knows exactly where it's going. It even gets up a small ledge in our kitchen (the transition from our carpet to the slate in the kitchen). Anyway, if you're considering one definitely get it, you won't regret it.
