dancing

2nd month for the dancing gif due to breaking a 1 day pageview record for Boxing Day (1.57m), monthly pageview record (33.8m) , monthly comments (95,543), monthly posted deals (3,271) and few more. January and February are generally very slow months so expect the annual "there aren't any more good deals" post. We were also able to donate $19,580 to charity this Christmas bringing our total to over $100,000.

  • Our most popular store for 2015, Dick Smith is caputs. 2016 will be an interesting year without DSE deals. Where are we all going to get our eneloop fixes?
  • The 2nd most controversial event: the eBay 15% off sale of the year that finished way earlier than originally expected.

Site Updates

  • We are on Instagram.
  • 403 page for comment/comment redirects should also show reason, if the node has been unpublished.
  • Sortable table for wiki. Feel free to have a play with it.
  • Changed the I entered/won to "Mark as Entered/Mark as Won". Some people thought they had won a lot of comps!
  • Lots of Bug fixes (too many to describe).

Coming up

  • Improve the Twitter feed to prevent tweeting out the removed deals (e.g. duplicates). (Change Tweet time to 10 minutes or if possible after a mod edit has detected or some other secret sauce.)
  • Search for a URL should bring you the store, not searching for the URL within posts.
  • 2015 Zeitgeist. Last years
  • Soft launch of another bargain site to join OzBargain & ChoiceCheapies (launched but still in beta).
  • Improvement of reminders system.
  • Importing/embedding wiki into forum/deals.

December 2015

  • mrbillions for posting the most popular deal of the month, eBay's 15% off Site Wide which was unfortunately cut short by 30 hours. The Billions man is certainly no stranger to posting eBay offers prior to official release, and had made a few "deal of the month" in the past years (#1, #2, #3). Keep them coming!

  • Spackbace for posting the most popular competition of the month, Daily Instant Prizes from Maccas. I have unfortunately refused to eat at McDonald's any more (after their copyright legal issues with OzBargain last year) so more chances for you guys :)

  • TRENT86 for being a deal posting machine in December. Actually TRENT has been posting a lot of deals last year, and he posted 105 deals in December with vote average +51.93. I believe all OzBargainers should really be appreciating the effort from some of our top-posters who contributed many great deals here — TRENT86, tightarse, etc just to name a few.

  • Katie2014 for posting 147 competitions with average +5 votes, being the comp queen of the month. Competitions have been a relatively new feature on OzBargain for ~20 months now and have also attracted some die hard following. Looking forward to more big wins from OzBargainers this year!

  • Jimmy007 for being an outstanding new user this year. The upcoming rookie has just left his P-plate last week, and has already posted 124 deals including 81 in December, 20 of them landed on the front page. Congratulations!

-Scotty

  • why didn't my two comments which both have over 79 negs each not show up? (only one did and the amount of negs is very wrong it says 49 when the comment has 75 negs.)

    • Net votes (pos - neg). What's the link to your other comment?

        • Ah right. I wonder why OzBargainers are so split on AMEX?

        • -2

@neil: personally I cannot and even if I could I don't want a credit card as it opens the oportunity to spend money I don't have much like loans etc.
My comment was about the fact that credit cards are not as simple as opening a bank account. Some people may get knocked back from the credit check therefore it's not really available to everyone. It should not have been implemented the way it was into the deal as the amex customers can see the main deal themself and also would see (if done this way)a link to the main deal on separate deals where the amex deal would apply.

Just the way I see that deal and other do to I guess.

I was quite surprised of the amount of votes both positive and negative.

      Yay , i won

Top work Trent - this guy deserves more accolades around here - great attitude, genuinely helpful, and his posts arent mining referral credits or suspicious of outside affiliations

Most Front-Page Deals posted by Store Reps & Vote Avg (Top 10)

Not in the list this time. I need to up my game.

    • that's true. You are usually on the list.

Maybe more variety of items posted. (maybe do a poll to see what users want?)

      • Management were really pushing Tronsmart, but you can only sell so many car chargers…

I might do a poll as I'm looking for something new at the moment.

        • but you can only sell so many car chargers

Yeah, I'm thinking that whoever wants one, has bought one by now :P

Power banks are always popular, but you have to compete with Mushtato (and people then compare with Gearbest etc :/ )

Not sure what else you could offer!

        • @Spackbace: A 2 way QC 2.0 power bank perhaps?

        • @Clear:

I think that has been asked about recently :) People wanting to QC from the power bank, not just to it

        • +1

          @Spackbace: That's tomorrow sorted. Thanks.

        • Management were really pushing Tronsmart

Geekbuying has always pushed Tronsmart since the very beginning. In fact, Geekbuying was originally in charge of Tronsmart's marketing until Tronsmart sidestepped Geekbuying, and Geekbuying was the first point of contact for any issues with Tronsmart's products.

        • @ausmechkeyboards: I'm well aware of that. My association with Geekbuying is the same as Tronsmart ;)

        • +1

headphones are always good on ozbargain. It seems to be one thing people buy all the time.

    No surprises there. XD

  • When can we expect the yearly stats neil :)

    • once a year

      • Still working on it.

Here is an interesting stat. The top 3 posters seem to make the frontpage close to half of the time.

        • TRENT86 posted 1007 deals , 493 made the front page. 48.9%
        • easternculture posted 457, 217 made the front page. 47.4%
        • Spackbace posted 312, 95 made the front page. 30.4%

However, then you have 2 other ends of the scale.

        • tightarse posted 815 deals, 772 of them made it to the front page. That's a 94.7% strike rate.
        • scotty posted 191, 47 made the front page. 24.6%
        • Poor scotty :(

  • Not sure if i was meant to get the banner about the new site but good luck with it!

  • I had no idea these stats were kept! Or that I could create alerts from Keywords!
I feel like a complete newb! Thanks for posting this info on the notice board bit on the right column… dont know how long you've been doing it but only just noticed that as well :).

Awesome sitting here reading who contributes to this fine website. I come here every day without fail, and its nice to see who makes it what it is (other than the mods of course).

    Well done everyone, and thanks.

Just a suggestion though, the Notice board thing should also be at the top of the screen when you click on "deals" on the top menu.
If you run on autopilot like me (and dont want to miss a hot deal just posted in the last hour or so), the first thing I click is the deals menu bit when first coming to the site (to sort to most recent). And THEN I scan over to the right to check out the most popular. Just a thought is all. Notice board at top like it is on the home page, but on the deals page too.

  • Sockpuppeting - 55

Sockpuppeting is the second biggest reason for removing posts! I bet it would be a lot higher if the OzB mods and users didn't check and report.

This makes me wonder just how much sockpuppeting goes on on sites that don't bother to check…
