      Ok then…

The deal is for the NBN broadband. The VOIP porting fee is not a deal.

      • I signed up 1 month ago. For the first 2 weeks my speed was about 75 down and 20 - 30 up. Now I only get 20-25 down and 2-4 up. Not sure what's changed but I'm thinking of switching over to someone else

        • Have you emailed support to have the issue investigated and rectified?

    • +5

      Internode charges $29.95 link

      • node and you guys
        anyone else charging this ??

    • +7

      Don’t port then.

Lots of other VOIP providers do it free and are cheaper anyway.

Your VOIP and ISP don’t need to be the same provider.

    • I think that's a passthru cost (but not sure)

How does Telecube handle peak time congestion? Any first hand experience of Telecube vs ABB?

    • Telecube have quotas and use that to handle peak time congestion.

    • +2

not verus ABB, but I went from OptusCable -> Telecube NBN (inner Melbourne) since Sept
Optus used to to grind to a halt week days after school (~4pm - 11pm) & all day school hols.
These school hols, there hasn't been any issues. I do run speeds tests from the router every week or so, the worst I got was ~70/30 the normal is 85/40 at the moment I'm getting 82/42

        • do a speedtest to san jose or some where in the US and UK plz
anyone can cap their local speeds on nbn

        • ah yes, but have you got two kids hammering ABCKids & Youtube during the test?

        • It's not peak time though so that's kind of meaningless…

        • @Viper8:
local speed tests are meaningless anyways unless you are on FTTN

        • @supabrudda: That's what QoS is for. :)

        • @Stealthzor: Not true, CVC congestion will affect local speed tests.

          @BrodenIt: Still on ADSL?

        • @sween64:
Yes I will pm a speed test in store tellers

        • @sween64:

Can i PM you some IP, can you share the responce time.

Also, do you have a POP in Darwin or planning to install one?

        • @live_1991: No plans for Darwin. Just Melbourne, Perth, Sydney & Brisbane at the moment with Adelaide to come next.

Yes you can PM me or you can post in the whirlpool thread asking for trace routes.

        • The problem with speed tests is that the most common point of congestion is the PoI due to an RSP purchasing inadequate CVC (unlikely to be the case for Telcube) which means that for it to be relevant, you have to have a test from the specific PoI you will be connecting to.

Secondly if an RSP provides unlimited plans, it will only take a few users thrashing the network to ruin it for everyone else. Still waiting for ACCC to start monitoring performance.

    • There is no congestion during peak times that I can tell. I stream a lot and it's been smooth sailing. The price is very very competitive but I read how the company wants to be aggressive in growing this year. The price is a no brainer if you are comparing between ABB and Telecube.

  • +2

Hi OP what modem are you using with Telecube? Also here is a link to the deal https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2675951#r55635911

    • +4

I'm on HFC so have an NBN supplied NTD. I use an ASUS RT-AC68U as my router.

    • I'm using a Ubiquti USG
I did start out with an old dlink dir-868

It depends on whether you've got NBN fiber/copper/coax/wireless as to what you use.

  • Does this include fixed wireless services?

    • +1

      Yes

  • It's up there with some of the most competitive plans i.e MyRepublic. It just depends how much bandwidth they buy for each area as to whether it will actually be a good deal.

    • MyRepublic has unlimited data plans, which means congestion.
Unlimited Broadband: Is It All It’s Cracked Up to Be?.

      • +4

That's a sketchy article. It's trying to compare quota with bandwidth which aren't directly correlated. Congestion is how much of the pipe is shared across all of their users. Now given that a backbone for a node of up to 384 ports is only 2GB often that claps out before the purchased pipe from the ISP does. the TL;DR is that an unlimited plan isn't a dead giveaway you'll have congestion issues. For example Telstra often has some of the worst congestion issues and they have more people on capped plans than any other ISP. Just an FYI I am a network engineer and have a fair knowledge of how the NBN works. This is my bread and butter. I personally use My Republic and cannot complain.

        • +1

NBN network is running at 15% utilisation and backhaul for a node can easily be upgraded by changing the fibre tranceivers.

Congestion can be caused by a small number of users on 100Mbps plans thrashing the network. Purchasing a capped plan on an ISP that offers unlimited plans means you will be impacted by those users.

Since ISPs started offering cheap unlimited plans on ADSL, the reality has been that heavy downloaders track network performance and rapidly change providers seeking better performance, so a good unlimited service today is likely to be bad in the near future. I prefer not to gamble with my internet connection.

        • Quota and bandwidth ARE related, since using bandwidth increases your download count - which quotas are a cap on.

If you have 'unlimited', you might download at max all day and night. Come peak hour, plenty of others are doing the same, and that means the shared bandwidth amongst everyone (CVC) is chewed up immediately.

Add in data caps, and people need to 'ration' their data. Set up limited times when downloads are active. Why would they chew up their own connection at peak hour, when they can ration it to early morning or when they are at work? Thus peak hour bandwidth usage is lower across the board, across the shared CVC, and peak hour performance is better.

          It's really that simple.

        • @StickMan:

My family of 5 uses roughly 500GB per month. This deal of 1TB/unlimited doesn't even really come into play with that argument. Bandwidth and quota are related sure. But bandwidth is directly related to congestion, quota is not. I could download 1TB in a month between the hours of midnight and 7am if I really wanted to and it wouldn't affect anyone in my neighborhood. If I wanted to only download things between 3pm-6pm (main peak hours) I could probably get away with could hundred gugs at most. That will affect congestion and add to the pain. The long and the short of it is this. People with low caps can add to congestion while people with unlimited only downloading at certain hours will not. I am not saying this is always the case but I am proving my point that quota and congestion and no where near directly linked. People on OZB claiming to be experts because they spend sometime Googling and talking to other 2nd hand experts, SMH.

        • @stumbows:

while people with unlimited only downloading at certain hours will not

Well this is the key to your argument, isn't it. And my point was saying, if you have unlimited there's nothing forcing you to ration your use, so you'd just let it download whenever you like.

Still unsure how you're "proving my point that quota and congestion and no where near directly linked". Bandwidth is data over time. Data forms quota. These are most definitely linked, by definition.

        • @StickMan: Oh and on this plan with 1TB & unlimited off peak do you think people will be forced to ration? I guess there's not much room for a brain a stickman.

        • +2

@stumbows: Quota & congestion are directly linked.

A 100Mbps plan can download 32TB/month. Now if someone is on a 1TB plan, they could thrash the network for the first day and then would find their speed limited to 1Mbps, limiting their impact on others.

Consider a 1Gbps plan can download 324TB a month. You can only run it at full speed for 2.5 hours.

Yes people are forced to ration usage, in the same way that water and power are rationed. If you require more data then you can make a choice to pay more or change your habits including moving some data transfers to off-peak hours. Alternatively you can switch to an RSP that doesn't impose quotas and experience congestion.

        • -1

@mathew42: Are you kidding me? These are unicorn type cases. Even TPG has a fair use policy on their unlimited where they actually terminated the contract of multiple users who were downloading roughly 2-3TB in a month. At this point I am wondering whether reason has avoided you like the south pole from the north. These are some of the worst arguments and reasoning I have ever heard. Do you work for Telecube? I actually advocated for Telecube with my OP about it being a deal comparative with MyRepublic which is my benchmark for good pricing. At point quotas, bandwidth & congestion wasn't even a consideration. But if we're being honest the speed test results to an overseas network is terrible unlike many of the other bigger ones that own their own international links. Congestion is probably a non issue because they are a small fish. If more people jump on board that will change. Let's look at real facts rather than the crap you are spewing, which is about as solid as air itself.

        • @stumbows: Congestion is actually a larger issue at smaller providers because they have less users to spread the variability in user behaviour across. More customers, equals more CVC per POIs which makes it easier. For more details, I suggest reading NBN Points of Interconnect and the future of competition by Simon Hackett.

There are people who boast about how much they can download in a month and many who believe that an unlimited data plan means they have paid for it so they should use all the data. Quotas curtail these anti-social behaviours. For a deeper understanding, I suggest researching Tragedy of the Commons.

Speed tests are variable in nature and need analysis to determine where the bottleneck is. The philosophy of the provider indicate if this will be addressed or ignored. Providers selling unlimited data plans will ignore performance issues, because they are selling to a price point, not quality.

        • @mathew42: I like how you skirted my real question here. Do you work for Telecube?

        • @mathew42: I like how you skirted my real question here. Do you work for Telecube? Or are you associated in anyway?

        • +1

@stumbows: If we're gonna ad-hom and strawman then I like how you're a network engineer who doesn't know the difference between GB and Gb, nor what even CVC is and how it works.

        • +1

@stumbows: I am in no way associated with Telecube or AussieBroadband even as a customer. However when the NBN reaches me they are on the shortlist.

My interest is purely in making sure that people understand what makes an ISP quality and why so many people complain about performance on the NBN is RSPs selling unlimited plans.

        • -2

@StickMan: So I wasn't fast enough to let go of the shift key between characters, really that's what's down to? By the way it's Ad Hominem, there's no hyphen or abbreviation. I know exactly what CVC is and how it works. Not sure where I have demonstrated otherwise? I can see where you pair have through. I can also easily prove my credentials. I am pretty sure Googling isn't a credential in the tech world. Despite it being the main source of tech support resolutions. What I can tell you about the CVC charges is that they are incredibly high in this country and ISP's doing packages at bottom dollar have to find their profit somewhere.

      • +1

Was with MyRepublic for a bit over year with no issues. Started having huge slowdowns around mid December month and would get constant timeout errors in peak times (between 5.30pm and 11.30pm) when just trying to reach google. Internet was literally unusable.

When contacted they initially told me there was nothing wrong and that there must be an error on the NBN side. In mid January they eventually admitted there was network congestion and that there was a scheduled network upgrade on 25th Jan. Not sure what the network is like now because I need internet for work and ended up switching to a more expensive ISPs that has much better ping and no congestion.

MyRepublic is still great value if you're lucky and don't get hit with congestion though.

        • Who did you switch to?

        • Over a month of congestion is terrible.

        • I can support this… MyRepublic have been EXTRA terrible over the Dec/Jan period. Couldn’t even watch a YouTube video on the lowest possible resolution a lot of the time, I was reverting to mobile data just to get things done. Sync speed has dropped below 50/20 whereas before it was between 70-80 down. I wouldn’t be surprised if they downgraded my sync speed to the 50/20 tier. I’m looking to move within the next month.

        • @sprof: Moved to Aussie Broadband. Had a bit of downtime during the first week but communication was excellent. Never took more than a few minutes to reach support either vs 45-90mins with MyRepublic. Ping is about half what was getting with MyRepublic as well.

Of course all this comes at an extra cost though…

    • Enough where customers don't notice any congestion. Some of the other "cheap" offers also have unlimited and causes congestion. Not with Telecube. Having said that they do have unlimited between midnight and 7am but they say they have the capacity spare at that time so it's not an issue.

  • I am with Telecube since October (paid $99 setup fee) … had a few problems at the start which were fixed by their service (wow … I spoke straight away to someone knowledgeable). Since then I got perfect speeds and hardly any peak congestion. I usually get 93/37 on my 100/40 plan (HFC).

Their online system is not great (but I do not miss anything here and rather have better costs). The service and quality is great! Hope they keep it streamlined and cost effective at great quality.

Have you used the beta my log in?

      https://telecube.com.au/myaccount/

      • Yep I did … it's definitely an improvement and looks nicer. It's enough for my purposes.

2 things which I would improve:
History of usage (it's only the current months) and
a better outage info system (I get so many emails which are not impacting me … but I guess that is an overall NBN issue for every provider and hard to fix).

        • Usage history will be coming hopefully.
One tip for outage email is to filter out the ones that don't mention your state; not an ideal workaround I know…

        • +1

@sween64: Hehe … but both are not important … just a nice to have. Keeping speed and good value is far more important for me. And Telecube is delivering on that front.

    • +4

Yeah I had an initial hiccup which was sorted quite quickly.
I've had one outage, which I logged at 10pm (via my phone) even though support is business hours, I had a reponse at 2am telling me it should be sorted!

The thing with telecube, it's really meant for techies, and I think they expect you're a little knowledgable. They won't read off a script & treat you like an idiot, but I doubt they're really there to hold your hand unboxing & setting up your new modem you bought from HN.

      • Also the first port of call for support is email. If you can't email when your home internet goes down (I use mobile internet instead) then Telecube isn't a good choice.

  • Whirlpool thread does not say "No setup fees".. Can you clarify please?

$69 setup fee will be covered by a $69 credit applied to your account– XXXL 100/40 and 25/5 only.

      does that help?

      • Thank you

  • Is it easy to move between plans?

    • +1

      Yes

      • What am I doing wrong? I’ve logged in and clicked on the link for submit special rate code then it says nbn rate set and nothing happens. What do I click on next?

        • +1

After you have applied the code there go to the "Services" section and click "Add New" and find the "NBN Internet" button, that will lead you through adding a service and you should see the special offer pricing.

        • @sween64: thanks. For order type I’m currently connected to SkyMesh so I’d click transfer service for order type?

        • @bennybaubles: which tech?

Add your current details (provider & tech) to the notes.

  • +5

Been a customer since September and very happy with the excellent service. Would recommend for 100/40 HFC customers.

  • 100000 times better than shitty tpg

    • In reality might be 2.5 times, since they only reaching 36 and Telecube mostly over 90, but gear in customer service, response time and drop out, could have been 10 times.

  • Does you have to be a member of telecube or siptalk already or can you sign up new with the links above?

Any preference one over the other?

    • Follow the steps above which means creating an account.

Their NBN offers are currently the same. The VOIP offers are different.

I think only Telecube has access to the beta my account portal.

  • +3

Great, will switch tomorrow from ABB. They are good too but they are no longer competitive with their plans.

    • It may because they have to pay for their dedicated links instead of sharing backhaul with other providers.

      • +1

Agreed. With the new ABB price points they are so much more expensive than anyone else.

        • How so?

Recently signed up for 25/5 with 100GB for $55.

      • Which is great if you're in their coverage area, but me in Im Camping Here Ville will not see those benefits for 10+ years.

  • I have been with Telecube for a couple of weeks now and they have been great. I was getting 93/35 at 7pm last night. Would recommend.

  • +1

    Hi There,
I'm just in the process of switching to Telecube. Any chance I could get the setup fee as credit or is it too late as I have paid the $138?

    • +2

Post in the whirlpool thread and John might offer you credit.

    • I just asked but apparently not. Currently have no internet and no $69. I'm going to have a disappointment sandwich.

  • +1

Bugger that there's no forward orders, I should be ready in 1-2 months (lol, we'll see).

    • Keep an eye out, there may be a good offer when you're ready.

    • Yeah. Double bugger. We were ready locally, via HFC, in November. Everybody was emailing me telling me. Just double checked the NBN page and they are now "Upgrading the network*". Jesus H Christ. I might have jumped at this. Price points and representative responses and behaviours as well as customer statements are encouraging.

    • Shame indeed. Was going to preorder but will most likely end up with someone else now as I refuse to pay $100/month for a plan that I know I could've got for $69/month.

  • +1

    Great timing, just got FTTB!

Thank you OP for submitting this deal!
