There was an interesting piece of research done on Reddit by Stanford University which concluded that 1% of all communities initiate 74% of all conflicts on Reddit. In particular:

  • Conflicts are initiated by active community members but are carried out by less active users. It is usually highly active users that post hyperlinks to target communities, but it is more peripheral users who actually follow these links and particpate in conflicts.
  • Conflicts are marked by the formation of "echo-chambers", where users in the discussion thread primarily interact with other members of their own community (i.e., "attackers" interact with "attackers" and "defenders" with "defenders").
  • Conflicts have long-term adverse effects on the engagement of members of the target community, but these adverse effects are mitigated when the "defending" community members engage in heated, direct debates with the "attackers".
  • Conflicts can be defended against when the attacked community directly engages with ('fights back') the attacking users.

While Reddit is more diverse in their discussion topics and amount of users, this is a familar pattern of many user generated content sites. The majority of our interactions with members both online and offline have been positive especially as we all have the same shared goal of finding the best bargains (or best comps). Subjects like race, religon and politics are unsurprisingly controversial but for OzBargain, things like caged eggs and driving seems to set people off.

There is a very small minority of different users over the years that cause the majority of "conflicts" (SPAM, personal attacks, trolling etc.) on OzBargain. I'd thought I'd add another stat this month in regards to % of comments removed which has remained at around ~1% for a number of years.

Site Updates of Interest (Not a full list)

  • Added user setting for infinite scrolling. Pick between either infinite or pagination.
  • Add Case Sensitive flag to referral settings. Some stores have case sensitive referral links.
  • Add related stores under domain/store deals page. e.g. Groupon has Scoopon, Livingsocial etc.
  • Allow moderators, power users or store reps to revert the URL rewrite on deal submission form. Sometimes removing parameters in link will make the deal not appear.
  • When unpublishing comment, pre-fill private message text with comment contents.
  • Store Accounts. Like Facebook, a user can post as the store. Rolled out and finding some stores to help test.
  • Fix bug where referral posting limit warning was not being shown on deal submission page
  • Daily Comment +vote Limit (brigading). Discussion. Work in progress.
  • Hide price field in classifieds if it's not selling or buying.
  • New Comment Notifications should skip if commentor is in blocked list.
  • Amazon Australia posting guidelines. Seems Amazon does no vetting on 3rd party sellers so guess we have to.

Winners from last month:

  • jackofspade for posting the deal of the month, FREE Kogan Mobile Prepaid Voucher Code. With 12,000+ click throughs to the deal I wonder how many SIM cards have actually Kogan given away.

  • Being Askhole for posting the most number of deals last month. 176 deals in a 28-day month (probably a record, but I'll have to lookup) and 84 of them getting on the OzBargain front page.

  • gnv9 for posting the most competitions last month. She posted 309 comps including the competition of the month, Win a Renault Koleos Life from Seven Network.

  • pegaxs for posting informative comments. One of the top 10 commenters last month (451 comments) but with the highest voting average. Just let me use this opportunity to remind people not to reply OP with pointless/off-topic comments in forum. Often we'll see someone asking a genuine question in our community forum, but none of the first replies are on-topic, let alone helpful. These comments will be flagged as off-topic or unpublished by moderators.

Congratulations!

I like the comments at the top of the post stating that 1% of the users start 70% of the shit fights on forums… nek minnit…

In the 10 most downvoted comments, tuzii and BrodenIt make up 6 of the top 10…

It would be nice if we had a system where users profiles showed some of these stats. Like the deals, it could show how many upvotes and downvotes each user has received for the month on their comments.

Maybe the wrong place to put this one, but one thing I read was users first posts in threads being useless info or pointless comments, what about a sort by new/highest voted. It can be frustrating when you’re trying to help OP, but your comment ends up buried on the second page because there are a miriad of pointless posts taking up valuable realestate.

It would be nice if we had a system where users profiles showed some of these stats.

Good suggestion. Would fit in nicely to the user page.

A user karma system has been on the suggestion list since at least 2012. We used to have a top users box on the front page, (OzBargain from 2008), which was calculated from activities over the last 14 days.

Maybe the wrong place to put this one, but one thing I read was users first posts in threads being useless info or pointless comments, what about a sort by new/highest voted.

I said something about it last month. Not so much that they are useless but they certainly get heavily voted on. I guess many people just read the thread + the first couple of comments before moving on. Sorting by votes (like Reddit) has been suggested and I think it's on the very very long list of things to add. We'll also be making sure moderator comments show as the first comment (like Reddit again) as our comments sometimes get lost with loads of comments in front of them.

    • there are a miriad of pointless posts taking up valuable realestate.

The posts taking up the most real-estate seems to be the lone agenda-driven fiend (who thinks they're some hero) trying to respond to everyone with the same rubbish duplicate comment, coz they can.

  • Hey neil

    Interesting finding,

Conflicts are marked by the formation of "echo-chambers", where users in the discussion thread primarily interact with other members of their own community (i.e., "attackers" interact with "attackers" and "defenders" with "defenders").

Absolutely, the 'In The News' section of Whirlpool has the characteristic echos of one idealist's hollow cranium to the next.

Which 1% of the community gets offended over gloves and started wanting guidelines specifically to cater for their benefit?
Which 1% thinks that if they identify as LGBBQ unicorns they should be granted extra privileges?

That nobody downloads and still gets 68 upvotes… I'll never work that that out…
