Updates, Top Deals, Comments, Forum Posts, Members of The Month + Other Stats [April 2018]

Well, these stats are way late.

April sparked a cash back war between newcomer to Australia, Shopback and Cashrewards, with each company matching/beating each others rates plus offering exclusive deals. They also were featured in "the news". Great to see competition but wonder what's happened with Pricepal?

We also made a change to notifications and implimented them in a way we should have probably at the start. If you aren't getting notifications or aren't getting subscriptions, see this thread. You'll need to specifically set your preferences.

Upcoming:

Site Updates of Interest (Not a full list)

  • Never automatically delete penalty private messages sent by system
  • Fix bug where nodes are still being listed as NEW when user has mark all as read.
  • Colour changes to buttons (yellow, blue), no more 1990s buttons.
  • Consolidating Reply & New Comment Notification for Node. Automatic web notifications for replies will no longer be sent until user auto-subscribes with option 'replies only' and includes web notification.
  • Firearm Deals have been banned.
  • RRP Guidelines have been implimented based on feedback and ACCC advice.
  • Floating comment bar uses a menu to provide functions to mobile users.
  • For Cashback Offers popup, show cashback sites with higher cashbacks first.
  • Add notification delivery method settings on category subscription page
  • Add infinite scroll to notifications.
  • Lots more subscription changes/bugs.

  • Thanks for these updates. I always like to see the top comments of the month.

Speaking of top comments, With certain posts, we used to be able to see top comments using the yellow bar, but that feature seems to be gone now. That's a shame — when I am in a hurry (read: feeling guilty about reading all the comments on a post or deal), I like to just click through the best comments there. I don't see it mentioned here, but is there any chance of it coming back?

    • +2

      That functionality might come back.

The reason it went away is because often the top voted comments are "funny" but not necessarily helpful.

      • The funny ones are the ones I want to read though :)

  • 2017 Zeitgeist still happening? Those are always pretty interesting.

    • +1

I thought I'd have it done by now but I also thought I'd have done the monthly stats by now.

  • Cool to see all those stats laid out!

  • Colour changes to buttons (yellow, blue), no more 1990s buttons.

    RIP. I loved those buttons.

  • what happened to all those xiaomi deals with like 20 xiaomi products inside? was there a ban on those or just went out of style?

    • +1

I met a Xiaomi manager earlier in the year. Turns out they noticed their products becoming increasingly popular more and more overseas and raised their wholesale prices for extra coin. They're also more strict on price control now. For example the Xiaomi Mi Box currently cannot be sold for less than $59 US by official distributors.

      • man… it would've been nice to see them stick to low value goods. Seems like they're popularity has taken a hit on ozbargain in the last few months. doesn't seem like the strategy is going to work here

        • Gearbest tried that strategy with their killer low Xiaomi deals in an effort to get more customers in their door. Unfortunately with AU being ranked 16th most profitable country, we're no longer entitled to the free shipping on low priced goods.

Xiaomi are killing it big time without discounts in other EU and South Asian markets anyway.

        • @Clear: That's a shame. It was a good strategy if it works out for them.

  • It's sad that you have to put "the news" in quotes.

    Bring it on, Elon Musk

  • +1

    Cheers neil

Congrats to stuthb for stepping up now there's one less PU

    • +1

What happened SB? Did you not feel like having PU anymore?

      • +3

Had a few things going on in life, made a stupid edit, retaliated to a troll which gave me a 1 day penalty box and it was taken away.

Now they have to put up with my reports to fix stuff 😂

        • +1

hope you get it back :)

        • +2

Oh no that's not good, I hope everything is alright now! We need you back :)

        • +1

Omg I totally forgot about that post! Classic.

        • +2

Thanks for all your good work.

  • +2

Hahaha tuzii's gone. Looks like it's permanent. Wonder what they did.

    • Oh, damn. Must've been something bad

      • +2

I'd guess more repeat offending as opposed to something worse than usual, I feel like there was a few stints in the sin bin before this.
