When is the ACCC going to actually do something about eBay price jacking?

It's plainly illegal, yet they won't do a thing unless individuals complain that they have been personally ripped off and have evidence of that fact.

It's about time that the regulator puts in some effort to develop automatic monitoring of price trends before, during and after these sales. Hell, I could whip up a script to do that in a few hours. It's not hard.

      • Ebay is only the platform for selling goods. They do not control the pricing of what people list on ebay. Accc would not be able to do anything to ebay themselves.

        • +2

Of course, it's the sellers that are the ones breaching ACL, not eBay itself.

If those sellers increased the price when the items went on sale in a brick-and-mortar store or a proper online store, they would face a massive fine. But on eBay, it seems anything goes.

A few high-profile fines from the ACCC would be enough to make sellers much more wary about engaging in this sort of deceptive conduct.

        • +1

FB was only the platform and look where that ended up..

        • Well yes, but ebay is also the marketplace. If a physical marketplace was full of dodgy sellers, you can bet the ACCC would want to have a word to the market owners to see what they were doing to prevent such behaviour

      • The grey area I think that sellers get away with it based on, is the fact that it's an eBay provided coupon (that not everyone will use because not everyone is 'clued into' how to get the best price, etc) deal. It's not an actual 20% off 'sale', it's a 20% off final price coupon for certain sellers on eBay. It is easily possible to pay the full price if you're not paying attention, for example; as that's the actual price. The stores very specifically go out of their way to advertise the price before coupon.

The sellers aren't advertising the prices at the 20% off price. They're advertising the full price, with a tiny banner that says "20% off with coupon code XXXX".

ACL would come into play if the eBay stores were doing a sale on their end (that you don't have to do anything to receive), as they would be actively advertising something as "20% off" despite it being 10-15% cheaper the day before the sale starts. That's definitely illegal.

Coupon codes are just a grey area.

How's the "Miele Complete C3 Cat & Dog Vacuum Cleaner" for $319 after the discount? Any good?

    • +4

      Insanely good price!
The last decent price was $352.00 delivered with 2 additional bags from a previous deal.

      • plus $9 postage I just noticed. So $328.

      • +1

I ordered one in a previous ebay deal, courier lost it (from Sydney to Melbourne FFS) and this pops up about $50 cheaper a month later. The bargain gods have smiled on me.

    • +11

Miele are much better tha Dyson if that helps

      • How cheap can you get the bags for? I've been using bagless for almost 20 years.

        • +3

$70-75 gets you 16 bags on ebay.

If you have vouchers, it will be even less.

That will last you for years.

If you're used to bagless, this is an outlay, but worth it. You don't have to empty it near as often, and when you do, it's a clean procedure.

        • You can get a little unit for Miele vacuums that attaches to the handle and works as a small bagless unit. Lowers suction a little but works really well.

        • @GunnerMcDagget: Sounds interesting. Any link to such a device? Thanks

        • @subywagon:

          https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Logik-Turbo-Dust-Interceptor-XL-…

I'm guessing it's one of these. Looks interesting.

If you get a Miele it's worth getting a turbo brush head for anything other than bare floor or really low pile rug/carpet. They are super hard to push otherwise. Insanely powerful suction though.

        • +1

          @Stevesie76:

Interesting! Would be good to get the opinions of someone who has this. Also I wonder what change that has to the HEPA filtering capabilities

        • +1

@Stevesie76: This one comes with the turbo brush. One of the main reason I got it, as I live with two long haired people… hair everywhere in the carpet!

        • +1

@Stevesie76: That's the one. I use it for my Miele. It's small so you have to empty it often but it works great.

        • @MrBurns:
How do you redeem when you buy it via eBay?

        • @subywagon:

You click and collect — or bring your receipt to a Bing Lee store to claim.

        • +1

@MrBurns: I had to get it shipped as there's no good guys within 100km of me. I msgd them through eBay and they said they would include them though, so it's all good!

        • @MrBurns: Wow, I was wondering why mine came with 2 boxes. Bonus! Too bad I got too ahead and already bought 4 boxes…

      • Apples and oranges.

        • peaches to plums, yeah…

    • Yes, very good. Best price I can recall.

    • This is going to sound rediculous BUT

I don’t have any dogs or cats but I’m still considering this vacuum because my old vacuum just broke

Would there be a cheaper version of the dog & cat accessories here weren’t necessary?

      • +1

I don't have pets but have a pet specific Miele. I think it's mostly marketing - ie "It's powerful enough to clean up after pets".

The accessories are pretty standard so I wouldn't worry too much.

      • Not ridiculous was thinking the same thing…

      • cat and dog is only named it because it is ideal for dust dander and hair. even without pets it is still great for homes with carpets or anyone sensitive to these things

    • +3

I bought one on during one of the 20% off deals and it is fantastic, the turbo brush is really good for carpet and rugs. We don’t have high pile rugs just low pile wool, which gets very fluffy and the turbo brush has cleaned it significantly better than the last two vacuums which were pretty bad (cheap Kogan and cheap Harvey Norman bagless models). It really gets into the carpet it’s great and the suction is strong on the max setting.
Yes you might pay for bags but getting a quality vacuum and years worth of bags for <$400- $500 is worth it.
Definitely recommend this vacuum. Only thing is the bag fullness meter can be hit and miss depending on what attachment you use. But you can just look in the bag yourself to see how it is going.

      • I have two cats and a dog that all shed.

How long you think those bags will last?

I really want one but can't imagine a set of 16 bags lasting years

        • -2

          no it won't be enough.
I have bagless Dyson with a power brush two kids and two dogs that shed.
I have to empty the canister every second time I vacuum.
So I can't see how 16 bags would be enough for a year

        • I don’t have animals or kids only a rug and a couple of rooms of carpet in an apartment so I can’t really comment, sorry!
You would probably fill up a few bags depending on how much mess/hair/dirt is brought into your house.

        • +1

4 bags is meant to be a years supply…. so depending how you vacuum at least 2-3 years…. It tells you when to change the bags…. they fit more than you think

        • +5

          @dookun:

I have bagless Dyson with a power brush two kids and two dogs that shed.
I have to empty the canister every second time I vacuum.

A bag is 5L. That is way more than 2 vacuums of your Dyson. In addition to that, the dust inside is compressed and dense, unlike with the dyson. A full bag is actually very heavy.

To give you a fair idea, I had a DC39 and either emptied it every time I vacuumed, or twice per vacuum.

With a 5L Miele bag, I empty the bag every 6-10 months. If your carpets are dustier than mine, you might be doing it every 3-4 months. I also use it to do dusting btw. Portraits that accumulate dust after years of being hanged, cob webs on ceilings, window sills. A bag lasts a very long time. It's the reason why I switched.

Don't mistake a bag as having the same capacity as a Dyson barrel. Having owned both vacs, I estimate at least 50 or more empties of the Dyson to be equivalent to one Miele bag. That Dyson barrel does not hold much.

        • If think you would get about 6-8 weeks per bag, we have a similar amount of pets and manage about that (vacuum once per week)

    • Wow didn't even know this was included in the sale. Thanks for the heads up! Definitely a good price from looking at the past Ozb deals.

    • can anyone tell which one is better between the Miele and this electrolux vaccum?

  • Any idea why this product is helpful for couples?

      • sydneytec (101673 )
        99.8% Positive feedback

      • Bought from them before, no issues.

        • +3

          I did.

I had to return an item. They charged a fee $10 for return postage. I'm like, wait.. why? I'm paying for the postage (or Paypal is), so why am I being charged for return postage? They said it's to pay for the original postage. But you claimed free shipping I insisted. Their response was, it's only free shipping if you keep the item. If you're refunding it, we need to charge you for that.

But they made no mention of this in their listing. Nowhere did it say you have to pay return shipping if you are refunding it. What it does say is free returns within 30 days.

This is dishonest, and is in fact against ebay's T&C. It's one thing to make the buyer pay for the shipping to return the item. But issuing a new invoice in order to accept the return is a breach. I had no choice but to pay it though. $468 of my money that I want back is in their hands.

So I'm not shopping with them ever again.

Mine was an edge case though and probably won't apply to you. But you asked if this company can be trusted, and my answer is no.

    • anyone bought the airpods managed to have the shipping update pls?

My order keeps stay still not sure if Sydneytec gonna cancel it @ $175

      thanks

mine have already arrived.. came last week

        • Got it by today, cheers for the head up and input.

  • +2

Ah, dangit. Only the Dyson V10 Animal on sale. Wonder if that's because no-one's buying them, if it's only an extra $100 to get all the extra accessories.

    • +1

It seems the difference between the Animal and Absolute are the 2 extra accessories the Absolute gets. The main useful one seems to be the soft roller cleaner head, which is pretty useful if you have hard floors.

So, I guess if the majority of your house is carpeted, the Animal might be the better deal.

      • Yeah it's a shame they don't have the plus!

I definitely want the soft roller cleaner head so will have to hold out

    • Is the only difference between the animal and absolute, just the accessories? (From a quick Google search I think it is)

      Edit. Answered above

      • And the colour :)

      • +3

To add on my explanation above, the Absolute has the following accessories which the Animal does not have:
        - Soft roller cleaner head. Which is only useful if your house is mostly hard floor (approx $100 on eBay)
        - Flexi Crevice Tool, which can be purchased separately for $15 on their website
        - Extension Hose, which can be purchase separately for $29 on their website
