eBay Australia has gone down the toilet.

Remember the good ol' days when there was 5% off $30 minimum spend. Now it is 5% off $50 or $70 minimum spend.

Then there was 10% off $75 minimum spend and on occasions for plus and non plus members 10% off $50 minimum spend. Now they are laughing in our faces at $120 minimum spend.

It is ridiculous especially when you see eBay UK and USA offers. Different markets but still.

    • +6

Probably because eBay think we're cashed up bogans..

    • +8

Their business model is increasingly on the nose.

I recently contacted them because a promotion code ended without notice as I was about to use it and their reply makes it clear that this roundabout of artificial deadlines and minimum spend is how they roll.

"… short term promotions are for us to attract more buyers to purchase items with urgency … are a great way to draw people in, create a sense of urgency, and get them to convert. This is our promotional strategy.
… customers have to spend a minimum amount in order to qualify for the promotion … we have to tie some goals and targets to its efforts. This is our way of marketing …".

ebay is less of the original 'auction' site and more of a 'marketplace' where they simply act as go-betweens for large sellers and buyers.
No-one should be naive enough to think that they're more than a business out to make money by whatever manipulation is necessary; all businesses utilise promotional and marketing tools to increase revenue.

However, when they're effectively a 'retailer' these practices become irritating.
      Imagine a bricks'n'mortar store offering a discount
      - not a huge one but enough to sway a purchasing decision
      - but only if you spend above a certain (substantial) amount
      - and it may only apply to a subset of items they sell
      - the prices of which may have been arbitrarily increased during the promotion
      - and it can end at any time including, metaphorically, as you're standing at the checkout.
Now repeat that cycle every few days with slightly different conditions.

But do you remember the days when you would walk into the corner shop with 20 cents and pick from 1 and 2 cent lollies? Feels bad man.

Wow I wish I could give out OzBargain gold!

      • Holy shit sherbet straws for days son!

    • +4

Still not as ridiculous as the devolution of Kogan vouchers.

      • $20 voucher: $100 minimum spend (save up to 20%)
      • $30 voucher: $120 minimum spend (save up to 25%)
      • $30 voucher: $250 minimum spend (save up to 12%)
      • $30 voucher: $500 minimum spend (save up to 6%)
      • $50 voucher: $1249 minimum spend (save up to 4%)
      • +2

Yeah - the other day I got a $50 Kogan voucher in my email and I had never considered buying from Kogan but thought "hmm, OK, let's see what the terms are". Nearly spat my coffee when I saw the $1249 minimum spend. Does anyone ACTUALLY make an impulse $1300 buy at Kogan?

        • +4

Kogan don't sell anything that is WORTH $1,300

        • Same here my partner came excitedly running up to me and showed me the voucher as I read the terms and conditions I said don't bother Min spend $1249 what an absolute joke !

    • Also there has not been a Plus discount for quite a while now.

  • +1

    Lol @ eBay… becoming a joke.

    • what do you mean "Becoming a joke" lol

  • +1

    AGAIN?!

  • +1

Today is the last day to get 1% back through ShopBack via app only

  • Does this work for a whole heap of $5 purchases in the same order, as long as it is over $120?

    • +1

      yes

    • No, there is a 10 item limit per transaction. You won't reach $120 with the limit.

      • NO. Good luck trying to checkout successfully without it throwing up an unintelligible error, if you have more than 4 or 5 items in your cart. Ebay say it is a problem if they are items from an overseas seller, but there is no rhyme or reason to it, sometimes multiple foreign items works, sometimes it doesn't, same if they are domestic items. Since 1 July 2018 when they implemented the "Gerry Harvey Tax" rules, I have never been able to come close to 10 items in my cart, whereas before that I could successfully get 25 or 30 ($2-$5) items in a cart for convenience, and checkout normally (any discount would only be applied to 10 items though).

  • +1

Myer has 20% off for another few days. You can’t stack this 10% off with the 20% off right?

    • No

    • +16

      The short answer? No.
      The long answer?
      Noooooooooooo.

Me: make up things to buy it's Christmas!

  • No random ends again please ..this makes shopping hard.

    • Yep a pain in the arse. Even if they updated the T&C the evening it was ending would help. Ozbargain often knows when it is ending but no notification on ebay itself.

  • +2

    Car parts excluded again??

    • it will be excluded in the future too. I have many car parts in cart but none of them are eligible (coupon used to work with car parts before)

    • Anybody can guess why car parts are often excluded ? Low margin ? High shipping fee ?

      • It sounds like you don't have one.

      • Buy one on feeBay (i.e. this one) to find out.

No discount because it is below $120.

    • Does anybody know what happened last year??

    • +1

Meh not holding my breath, will be min spend of $120 as usual and my cart hasn't been able to go over the $90 mark the last 30 eBay promotions.

Still holding out until the min spend is down otherwise eBay can stick it. I'm a true ozbargainner and will hold out till it comes down :)

Kudos to op's posting eBay promotions but I won't upvote till the deal applies to the majority of peeps where we will get use out of these promotions

  • want some great google pixel 3 xl offers

  • not bad combined with First Choice 20% of all single malts, for example the balvenie doublewood 17 for $126 Delivered

    • Though, for a lot of the products the 20% is only bring the price back to normal street pricing.

  • Any idea how is this ebay seller? https://www.ebay.com.au/usr/my-phonez

    • ebay have a feature called "Feedback"…

      • +1

Thank you for opening my eyes.

        • Go through all the negative feedbacks and neutral ones. From there, you can get an idea. If there are negative ones on the same or similar product(s) you are interested in, those about basically warning signs.

If you are cynical about the seller and want some OZBers to re-assure you, you really need to think about whether that's worth it.

          • @netsurfer: Thank you. I did go through the feedbacks earlier and decided not to proceed with that seller.

FU eBay and your min spending
