New Tyres Needed. Any Suggestions?

Hi everyone

I was looking to buy new tyres for my car. It's for a MB GLS350d. I've been told that expensive or not they wear out about the same. Is that correct? Which brand/type would you suggest? It's a 21 inch Pirelle. Other info as it shows on the tyres is: DOT JR VK M749. 295/40 ZR21 111Y.
These are Radial tubeless. I don't think they are run flats. There is a spare (half the width of the other tyres) in the back. Here is a pic of the full tyre : http://imgur.com/gallery/CafaMqq

I live in Bundaberg,QLD

Also I've noticed the rim has a few scratches that I cant fix. Here it is (http://imgur.com/gallery/CCAZqXn) If you have any suggestions what can be done about it, will be great.
Thanks heaps!

Just buy a name brand. I like Bridgestone, but any decent one will be good. Wait for '4 for 3' offer.

    Thoughts
    1) don't use tinypic for images
    2) post a photo of the tyre you have with all the words on the outside visible so we can have a better idea of what you have
    3) why skimp on tyres? they are the only things holding you to the road
    4) re: rim damage - depends on the depth of the scars

    • What else to use to upload pics?
I will add details of the tyre in the post in a bit.
      Thanks

You have a $100,000 car and you are skimping on tyres.

    tl;dr op is nuts

    • I don't mind paying more, but I don't know much about tyres and I've been told that a 3000 set wears out the same as a 2000 dollars set of 4. I will edit the post a bit to clarify it.

Whoever told you that is talking crap.
There are so many factors, it is impossible to generalise

Tyre is the only part of your car touch the road, it is the best safety feature you can have. Best brake with bad tyre won't save your life.

  • Your edited post says they are 21 inch tyres, not 22

We do actually need pics as that gives us more info than you have listed. Are they run-flats?

and where are you located? - we need to know your local tyre shops

    • Yup it's a 21..not 22.i live in Bundaberg Qld. And I dont think they are run flats…. It doesn't say on the tyre itself and there is a spare one at the back too.

Continental would be my choice in your size

Phone around your local stores and get a price

The continentals on my previous ML and GLC were both run-flats and they both had spare wheels too. Pop into a local shop and get a quote and advice then cross compare with other stores/online.

Here's a comparison of prices and specs: https://www.tyresales.com.au/tyre/size/295-40r21

Unusual for Mercs to have Pirelli tyres, must have been replaced at some point as Continental are the standard ones for SUVs.

Don't skimp out on tyres, they're about a hand's size footprint of the only contact between the vehicle and the road.

The rim scrapes are very easy to repair, can get a kit and do it yourself or any wheel refurbisher can do it. I would suggest not bothering though, it doesn't matter and save that money for better tyres.

    • Thanks for your advice
I ended up buying this one at the local Bob Jane T Mart for the same price.

That looks like a good option for comfort and handling, good choice.

  • I've been told that expensive or not they wear out about the same. Is that correct?

Tyre got treadwear rating (more = last longer), but not reflective on tyre price alone.
    It can be :

    1) dry grip
    2) wet grip (aqua-plane)
    3) comfort (absorb road imperfections)
    4) noisy (road humming noise)
    5) quality/reliability (tyre blow/sidewall bulge)
    6) treadwear lasting

    • Yea, the current pirelli got this sidewall buldge. Not very happy about that. And that's just over 2 yr old by a few weeks

Just make sure you choose a major brand e.g:
    Pirelli
    Bridgestone
    Goodyear
    Continental
    Michelin
    Yokohama
    Hankook

If you go with a no-brand cheaply made tyre to save $$$ you are risking yours and other peoples lives.

Wear rate is due to a combination of driving style, tyre pressures, highway vs city driving, tyre segment type (performance vs endurance). Most major brands have tyres for all of the difference segments.

  • You are looking at $350-500 / Tyre. Call Kmart and get a price, they are usually the best for the price. I would probably try and stick to the manufactured tyre.

  • I have a ford focus 04. What tires should i get? With so many choices out there i feel overwhelmed. Thank you
