Question about USA Voltage Vs Australia

Can anyone tell me if this Sewing machine will work in Australia ? I know that US has different power voltage, but if I can get this to work with an adaptor etc it is much cheaper than buying in Australia.

Thanks.

  • You can purchase a step down transformer (Kogan, $36 for 500w) to convert voltage. I use one for a Japanese rice mill and it works fine. The only thing that won't be converted is the frequency (stays at 50Hz versus 60 in the USA). This is very unlikely to cause problems, but if it does you could use a US sourced pure sine wave inverter to convert 12V to 110V 60Hz. Costs from $100 upwards.

It might not be required anyway as almost all gear works from 100 to 240v these days.

    • It depends on the motor. If it is fully computer controlled, or a DC motor, you'll be fine. If the machine contains an AC motor, it will turn at 5/6 of the speed which might be a problem in a precision sewing device.

Check if the local and US serial numbers are the same.

It would work with an step down converter but adding the additional costs it doesn't look to-be that much cheaper. Australian RRP is $1299 but can be found less than $1000

350USD + post 120 USD (670aud)+ Converter $120.(Total $790) plus any possible import duty and tax

If postage was say $50 and you already had a converter could be worth the risk importing

Edit Ebay $225USD plus $69.09 Shipping (No Acc)

    Here you go:
The SE600 voltage is 120 volts, 60Hz and 45 watts.

    From US Amazon

  • Just FYI if you plan on buying the sewing machine. Any warranty claims are going to be a pain, since warranty is for the USA only and you will need to ship the sewing machine back and forth yourself and if they forget to fix something then you will have to ship it back to them again…

  • As far as I can see, this is not a model that Brother sell in Australia, and in a quick search, I couldn't find anywhere that sells a 240V or 230V version. I also can't find any technical details about the machine, so it's unclear to me whether it has an AC or a DC motor. I'm therefore not sure whether the difference in mains frequency between the USA and here would be an issue.

Have you called Brother Australia and asked them about it?

  • Interestingly, the User manual linked to under Technical Specifications has a section marked for "Users in Australia and New Zealand".

  • Wow, thanks for everyones help. I think I will not buy from the USA for the reasons outlined above. So, now I need to hunt for a good sewing/embroidery machine in Australia. It's for my wife, she is in no way a professional sewer but wants to start exploring embroidery also. So I'm now thinking of this one: https://www.hobbysew.com.au/machines/embroidery-machines/jan…

It's twice what I wanted to pay, but it seems better than the Brother nv-180.

Too bad I never see sewing machine shop coupon codes :(

    Cheers

Too bad I never see sewing machine shop coupon codes

Spotlight regularly has huge discounts on sewing machines, and their sewing machine staff are quite knowledgeable.

I just checked their web site - they have about 8 machines on sale at present, all at a pretty good discount. They'll probably have other machines on sale soon.
