    "Lifetime Free Map Upgrades"

    CROOKS!!

  • Don't buy tomtom, a lot of their newer gps feel like unfinihed R&D their trying to offload. I had the Go620 and the mount ball joint socket fails really quickly as I don't think it can handle the weight of the unit. Their solution is to keep replacing the mount and every mount will fail after a while.

    Seriously don't buy tomtom

  • Last year I received an offer to upgrade for 50% because of the Vodafone's 2G network shutdown, which features live traffic updates on my older Tomtom. Therefore, this 30% is no deal, at least for me. Currently I just subscribed to TomTom App and use it on my Note 9, works a treat and faster as well than these stand alone GPS.

    • They have almost stopped updating the app with new features. It’s just a cheap money printing tool for them now. I don’t doubt the algorithm it used, quite good compare to others. But the fact they don’t want to spend a cent on development is quite disappointing.

      • The apps still work the treat. I guess all I care is the live traffic updates (via 4G on the phone) and the red light cameras. Overall, it loads much faster than my Tomtom go 520, which I've returned in the end because into the 11th month of the warranty, it broke down.

        • Yes it works, I use it regularly as well. All TomTom does is to ensure it works. With subscription model I’d expect it to go under not heavy but at least some development rather than adapting operating system updates only.

People still use TomTom? Thought the standard is google maps.

Parents still use a TomTom with lifetime free worldwide maps and cameras updates in the car. Prefer it over using GPS on Phone.

Myself prefer using GPS on mobile device. Currently using free Here WeGo which includes fee worldwide map updates, offline use, Traffic/Speed cameras and road speed warnings.

I never use a phone for navigation:
      1. There's no offline maps, so you can't use it when you go to areas with no signal, e.g. national parks, unless you know the place you are going before hand and download the area map to use offline
      2. The dedicated GPS in devices like TomTom is stronger and more accurate than that of mobile phone
      3. I don't want to either kill my phone battery or reduce its lifetime
      4. I personally prefer to use phone with small screen for communication purpose and GPS device with 6" screen for navigation. It's easier for my eyes.

And yes, there're people like me. No such thing as "standard is Google Maps".

      • Offline maps:
        1) HERE WeGo works very well. The W10M version knew how to get me from Eliot Falls to Bamaga. Try that in Google maps. (Actually now works, didn't in 2016) **
        2) IGO NextGen - this is an Android APK - again the 4WD stuff is very good.

** GMaps - strewth the blue line on this one is an illegal route - through the croc-infested Jardine River…

      • You can download offline maps for Google maps.

I always do this before a road trip in case I lose reception, and because my car GPS often lacks detail in newly developed regional areas.

Agreed about tiny phone screens. My phone is only 6.2", car is 8.8".

    • My trusty old S7 does the job fine for navigating whereas my partners Iphone 6 struggles doing it

  • Sygic is offline.

  • I also got the 50% off a new device because 2G shutdown fiasco.

Reluctantly bought a GO620 because the wife liked the original one in her car. Very temperamental connectivity with phones (note 8 and xperia) to access phone data for live traffic. Once set up, it should just connect when it is in range of the phones, no stuffing around with the mydrive app etc. It's pretty BS.

Lucky it was half price, still bitter. Would not recommend.

I do like a dedicated GPS device however. Just not a tomtom.

    • Have the same connection issue over Bluetooth. I use hotspot now so the GPS can use a wifi signal and it works 100% of the time. It's not ideal to have the phone running hotspot though.

      • Interesting, never thought of that. Would open the phone's bluetooth up for use with the inc car stereo.

        • Your phone should allow multiple Bluetooth connections. I had mine connected to the car, gps and watch

    • Agreed with all of the above, BUT so far in terms of Live Traffic data, TOMTOM is still the best because they use the information from trucks running around Australia instead of some fixed sensors like in other devices. I like the way it works and hence still can't jump ship because I can't find a better one. Also, the software and UI works very well too, except for the phone connectivity issues

  • I got that email, and unsubbed from all. I no longer own a Tomtom and have no plans to buy one, at any price.
