Car to Buy for around $25k or Less

So I made a budget for about $20k to get a demo or a new car. Don’t know much about cars so wanting new and warranty etc. So had Polo and Mazda 3 and Golf in mind as I didn’t know much else. Stuck on this Mazda 3 automatic clearance for about $23,500 atm as new one is coming next month close to $30k apparently. Hoping you guys could give some ideas on what to do and consider please. Just trying to see what I can do to have a car I can drive like 500km a week so thought you guys must be the best to advice. Thanks in advance.

    Corolla

    • Aren’t they like $30k or something ?

No. You were asking “demo”. There should be plenty of either demo or 2018 plated new Corollas for your budget price.

so want to buy a brand new car and start losing money.

why not a near new e.g. 3 year old mazda with low lms?

or something like this 2013 Mazda 3 Neo BL Series 2 Manual MY13 with 23,000kms for $11,000

You lose money on ANY car.

That's not necessarily true. When buying used, you can land yourself really good bargain so that it doesn't really depreciate in value for quite a while. I'm driving such a car and proud of it.

        • It depreciates from the day you purchase it, not quite a while after.

Each to their own, there are so many benefits to owning a a new or demo car that get grossly ignored. And these benefits such as warranties, service deals and latest tech are more prevalent as car technology becomes more complex. But it’s not until you get burnt on a used car that you realise this.

New cars used to be a luxury, now it’s making more sense (for some car makes, not all!). As I said, each to their own, if you do minimal kms then used car will do the job, but if you have a regular lengthy commute then you should definitely weigh up the risks. I think some of the financial garb on this issue needs to be revisited.

That's just not true. Plenty of people who bought second hand car and ended up selling for more than they originally paid.

            I'm not convinced.

To take advantage of "extended" warranties, you need to have it serviced at overpriced dealerships and your insurance premiums are higher too. And then on top of all, your new car might lose up to 50% of its value within first 3 years.

Are there benefits of buying new car? Yes… but it will cost you. I don't value those benefits for the price you have to pay.

I'm happy to purchase 3 year old car which has been taken care of and looks like brand new at 50% discount. I think that's pretty sweet spot where you get the best value for money without compromising too much on tech, safety and status (3 years old car is still considered "new").

Not unless it is high yield

    1) Go have a test drive (it is perfectly fine to take a test drive and not buy there and then. Tell the salesman you have a few cars you want to decide between on). Consider the scenario you want to use the car for. What do you feel could be improved to the car that you have now (or had in the past). What is important? Suspension comfort (drive over bump). Does it move around much when cornering. Road noise. Does the seat fit you nicely? Check build quality. Does it feel solid. Rugged. And pleasant to touch. Does everything looks to be well put together?

    2) Take brochure. Look at standard equipment. Ask for price/option list. Ask for servicing cost.

    3) Move on to another car you might like. Repeat step 1 and 2.

    4) Go home. Consider all the choices. Which one you like the design/quality/feel. Which left you good impression. Sleep on it. And if you have decided…

    5) Call around dealer and ask for the best price.

5a) If you are still not sure. That means you haven't found the car that fits you.

Me personally, with that budget I would be tempted to look at (in order of preference)

    Honda Civic
    Mazda 3
    VW Golf
    VW Polo

Get new, especially at this price-point/segment. Not worth it getting demo, people usually trash it, and there is not much reduction in price. Newish used car also not much difference in price compared to new, and someone used it before, we don't know why they have sold it, and it has been doing.

Heard new car sales tanked last year, and car manufacturer has been forcing dealer to buy stock. So car dealer should be keen to moved as they have overstocked.

Why would you replace a 3yo Mazda 3 with a new one? Differences are minimal.

And if it's a second car in the driveway to the 3yo Mazda 3, wouldn't you want something different than another Mazda 3? Something with less road noise? 😂

  • Driving 25000km per year calls for a hybrid car. It will save you around 2.5-3L/100km or around 750 litres of petrol a year. I would buy a used camry or corolla hybrid or prius. Or even stretch and haggle for a bnew corolla hybrid

    Increase your budget to $80k

Up into the high yield investment territory….

  • Kia Cerato. I just got one and I love it. More features and longer warranty than Corolla and cheaper. I think you'd have to be mad to consider anything else.

    • +1

I agree with Kia Cerato. $21k drive away for a base model, another $2k for driver assist.

If I didn't go test drive a Golf and got offered a similar price, I would have bought the Cerato in a heartbeat.

  • Thanks a lot for the guidance and help guys . Did a test drive for Golf , Mazda 3 Max Sport and Toyota Hybrid - Mazda 2018 plate was on clearance as new one coming next month - usually $28,500 and going for $25,500 . Got them to agree for $24,000 with mats included so I think I got a great price . Well I hope now haha
