Might be worth saying usually dispatched in 1-2 months in the description…

Everyone needs 120Hz when running the Maccas app!

  • comparing this phone to the xiaomi poco 1.

the razer phone has wirless charging, front facing speakers and a dac.

      No headphone jack though :(

      • All phones have a DAC.
Is there something special about the one in the Razer?

        • Yes, but most are part of the board. I think this one has a dac bulit into the headphone adapter.

          • -3

@FeRGan: But it has no headphone jack?
So they're claiming to have a fancy DAC, with no way to utilise it?
            Sounds like crazy marketing.

After some searching i can't even see what DAC it uses.
If there was something special about it i'd have thought they would have made mention of it.

I won't try to hide it, not a fan of these things, they seem more marketing BS than substance.
What good is a 120Hz display if all it's going to do is drain the battery faster for slightly nicer swiping of the launcher screens.
I will do nothing for games, good luck getting anything to run comfortable faster than 30FPS on a mobile.

@virtual81: "The trade off was not having the jack - but what sealed it for me was that we were able to get audiophile quality sound with the dedicated 24-Bit THX Certified DAC adapter—and I made sure we included that with every phone."

              • @FeRGan: Just make sure you don't lose the adapter.

            • @virtual81: Do some research on the phone, it doesn't use 120hz all the time. This is a gamers phone btw.

I thought poco can't even watch Netflix at full hd right?

              • @onlinepred: xiaomi doesnt have netflix drm afaik

              • -3

@onlinepred: Actually have done some research, and that's what has me asking what the hell this phone is all about.
Nowhere can i see where it says what DAC it uses.
Nothing stopping them from having the DAC internal and thus having both the internal speakers and headphones benefit from it.
Their claim of dropping th jack for +battery size is bullshit when Samsung can for a 4amp battery, and a stylus and a headphone jack into a phone.

Am well aware the refresh rate is selectable.
The crazy thing is that the only time the frame rate is high enough for the high refresh rate to be beneficial is outside of games.
Most games with few exceptions will barely pass 30FPS on this handset.

So yeah… you can check your email at 120FPS with the display set to 120Hz.

I'm just making some solid points.
Not my fault Razer (and just about every other manufacturer) are releasing specs / hype products with only a little substance.

                The questions standing are
                1) what DAC is it.
THX certification means pretty much nothing on a DAC as it's only one component of a whole system.

2a) what use is 120Hz with the intent of gaming if anything more than a mild game can't hit 60FPS

2b) what use is 120Hz outside of games if it's going to add battery drain.

Most people still don't have 120Hz TV's, PC's or notebooks, isn't 120Hz in a pocket sized device where battery life is a serious factor not just a little bit silly?

I'm all for innovation, but not seeing anything practical here.

My dream phone would be a 5.5"-6" device, 1080p OLED, a little bit fat, 4-5AmpHr replacable battery with top shelf snapdragon and a vanilla Android OS.
Stick in it 64GB of really damn fast flash for the phone and apps to run on, but still gimme an SD slot for my bulk storage, pics and video.
1 good camera on each side, camera recessed a little to protect the lens.
A bit of a bezel to give a buffer zone between phone edge and screen, and a pair if nice front facing speakers.
Pop a nice DAC into it.
                USB C all the things
Sell at a moderate price, make parts readily available.

                ::edit::
Ok…. THX are owned by Razer…. explains a lot

I think the samsung J and A series phones has you covered. Although your needs are very specific a numerous so I doubt any phone is going to tick all of those boxes.

                  • -1

@lostn: I reckon those needs are pretty sensible, just no one makes a phone like it.
Everything is all geared to maximum perceived specs and minimum build cost and and max profit.

I know some people want more but 1080p is plenty for a handheld device.
Cheaper to impliment, less pixels for the GPU to push, high frames in games and/or lower GPU power usage to drive it.
I bet there would be a bunch of uses of 1440p phones still running 1080p PC's and TV's.

A big battery is something no one would argue with.

Top shelf Snapdragon, because we all want fast and efficient phones.

Fast flash, again for performance, no need for 128/256GB for photos and music, that stuff can sit on slower, cheaper removable storage.

A bit of a bezel for durability, so a drop on a corner doesn't guarantee a cracked screen.

Front facing speakers, because they're nice to have and doubles as providing a sensible location either side for the speaker for mic(s), sensors and a camera.

1 good camera on each side, for those of use who appreciate a good camera but are happy enough to not get carried away.

A nice DAC, and that doesn't have to mean expensive, just nice.
Might only add 50 cents to the bill of materials.

                    USB C for obvious reasons.

By holding back on the display and cameras and minimising investment in developing a custom launcher etc and sticking with Android One i'd hope all the above could be achieved for ~ $600 - $800 street price.

I don't see the above as a niche product, i'm sure it's something that might make quite a few people happy.

Interested to hear if anything above would appeal to certain people and why?
Many would be justified to want more/better cameras if that's their thing.
Some of you might prefer to sacrifice battery and durability to have something ultra slim.
Some of you might not agree that 1080p is sufficient, i'd argue that looking close a 1440p would be nice, but the performance bump from driving 2MP instead of 3.6MP, or an extended run time might convince you otherwise… or not.

Would love it if someone built a well specced, affordable and durable phone.

                    • @virtual81: The more things you want, the harder it is to find it all on the one device.

Not everyone wants the same things or same combination of things you want.

I know, because I'm never satisfied either and have to compromise.

Pretty soon there will be no more headphone jack because everyone has found some courage.

              • @onlinepred: You can now with the latest update from Xiaomi.

    • +2

They are also offering significantly different displays. The Razer has an IGZO IPS screen with 120hz refresh rate, whereas the pocophone has a fairly average IPS screen. The Razer has Dolby atmos and the pocophone has…speakers, but also a 3.5mm jack. Whether these matter to you is an individual value judgement. But the cost cutting has to come from somewhere.

      • its so hard to find the perfect phone huh.

I'm hunting for the perfect phone and so far the Asus Rog phone ticks all the boxes (expect the price).

        • +1

I was looking at either a razer 2 or a ROG phone; ended up getting a Huawei Mate 20 X (huge and lacks b28, but performance is outstanding and has a headphone jack). The Mate 20 Pro has band 28 and the same processor as the Mate 20 X (but without the Graphene vapour chamber cooling) - might be worth a look

    • Uhhhh it most definitely does have LED notifications. The razer logo on the back is a chroma RGB notification.

    • i paid $600 for poco from xiaomi store, so not quite double but definitely more

      • $401 deal posted here from random china store gear bang bus etc

    • The biggest difference is 120hz vs 60hz.

It's marketed as a gaming phone. If you're not going to do gaming on it, may as well get something cheaper.

But it's hard to beat those specs for this price.

And yeah, Xiaomi does not know how to do screens higher than 1080p.

  • Will this help me to buy bargains online faster?

    • +4

Technically yes, the screen will refresh quicker :P

Isn't phone cost more than $49, thus free delivery?

    • I think it's a typo in the title. Because it's from the US I think you need over $49 AND prime for free shipping?

  • +1

Do you get a free scooter?

  • Given its from the US will it work on Australian networks?

  • What's warranty like with Amazon US via AU? Do you get ACL?
