Best Sit/Stand Desk

Could anyone advise where I can find a reliable sit/stand desk for under $500?

I would prefer a motorised version than a hand-crank version, simply because I want to keep focusing on work while the motor adjusted the height for me.

I don't have preference for colour or style, as long as the size fits (140x80cm max), and it is tough, durable, long lasting, reliable warranty. I don't want the headache of returning a furniture.

Ikea sold one for $499: https://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/S09222577/#/S892…

Grays Online eBay currently have a few: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Motorised-Height-Adjustable-Desk…

Thank you for you help.

    • Is it any good?

With the amount of them that break down in my office I would make sure to buy from a brick and mortar with a good warranty. We've also stopped buying the hand cranked desks because the mechanism always breaks without fail.

Oh wow. I read review on Ikea motorised version that it is so bad it almost always fail.
But the hand-cranked version got good reviews.

How can a hand-cranked version breaks?

Not sure man, I guess the mechanism just no longer works and the desk doesn't go up when cranked. We have a warranty from where we purchase them from, the repair guy will come in and just say that it needs to be replaced.

Costco have one for $469, from memory.
They have a cross bar at the bottom, which is a bit annoying, but they have a toughened glass top and preset buttons, as well as adjustable up/down buttons. They seem to work pretty good and, if you don’t like it, you can take it back and get your money back.

I got one of the electric frames from ebay for around $200 then bought a nice $100 wood top from bunnings to screw on. Much bigger than most you can buy and the top is much better quality. Don't know about the longevity of the electric motorised frames but I've been using mine for about 3 months so far with no issues

Slightly over your budget, but I have one of these:

With an IKEA table top, it comes to $640 total. It's so good I bought another one for my son a year later. The main features are:

    • Goes lower and higher than anything else I've seen: 61.2cm to 127cm
    • At 40kg it's around twice as heavy as other frames, which makes a big difference in the amount of wobble you get when it's raised. Nothing worse than having your screen wobbling around while you're typing.
    • Load capacity is 120kg - quite good for having a large monitor and still being able to lean on it safely.
    • No cross bar, so you can stretch your legs out when seated.
    • Does it wobble at maximum height?

      • Yes it definitely wobbles at full height. But it's better than anything else I've been able to try, which is the IKEA ones and the ones Officeworks used to carry a few years ago. I'm exactly six feet tall, and I like to rest my forearms on the edge of the table when I'm typing, so I have the height at 117cm, 10cm less than max, and at that height I can't detect wobbling in the screen at all. I also use a 49" TV as my monitor, which is more prone to wobbling and I'm not noticing any wobbling. But my glass of water sloshes side to side a little.

It has three telescoping segments in each leg - not sure if that makes a difference to the wobbling. Also, I'm using the rectangular profile legs. This company also has round legs, but I've never seen it and can't comment if it's better or worse than the rectangular legs.

Good luck. I've heard that if your job involves sitting for a long time your life expectancy goes down, and even exercise can not mitigate it. It's a good investment.

Cheers for the heads up. Start a new job on the 18th and need one of these for working from home.
      Will suss them out.

Have the same config and have to agree, a great stand desk. The quality of the frame is terrific, really hefty and sturdy once set up.

  • what about getting a sit to stand contraption that sits on your desk. We get them at our office sometimes where its not feasible to isntall a physical sit to stand desk. I think they are called varidesk.

I tried one, my company bought it for me. it was very wobbly. I would not recommend it. You also can't write on it, the pressure would push it down.

  • I have used an IKEA Skarsta in my home office for about 15 months and it does the job fine. No wobble etc. My only qualm would be that you can't change positions as quickly as you have to manually wind it up/down but this has never really bothered me.

I have a Vari-desk lookalike at work, but in certain positions you can't apply pressure on it or it will fall down, and there's not enough space for the mouse etc, so actually much happier with the Skarsta.

    • Damn, a bit too much though. I wish they have hand cranked version.
