Vodafone 4G Sim Only Plan Sim in 4G WiFi Router

Hi all,
I’ve been sizing up a Vodafone 4G plan as it absolutely rockets compared to Optus.
Can anyone confirm that signing up for a Vodafone Sim Only plan and putting the sim into a third party 4G modem such as Asus or Billion works? I’m wanting to know if we can use the mobile sim for just the data.
We don’t use a huge amount of streaming services and the 100GB for $55 (student rate) looks awesome.
I’m just waiting until my prepaid Optus sim runs out of data using the crappy old E593 4G modem.

As long as the modem you choose covers the vodafone bands in use at towers near where you want to use the modem, you should be fine.

    • The one I’ve been researching is the Asus 4G-AC68U.

Here’s from the specs which I’m led to believe is a Cat 6 class modem.

      From the specs page:
LTE: Downlink 300 Mbps / Uplink 50 Mbps
      HSPA+: Downlink 42.2 Mbps / Uplink 5.76 Mbps
      4G FDD-LTE: 800 /1800 /2100 /2600
      4G TDD-LTE: 2600
      3G UMTS: 900 /2100

Essentially, I’m trying to avoid paying $300 for a new development NBN connection which isn’t too far away from being connected in our estate

      • If you own the house, just pay the $300 you have no choice.

If renting, just ask your landlord to pay for it as it will benefit future tenants.

I believe that Vodfone also uses 850Mhz, which your modem doesn't seem to have.

As I said, you need your modem to cover the bands that Vodafone use in your area. You should be able to find that out from sites like OzTowers https://oztowers.com.au/Home/Query by entering your postcode.

        • Yeah I noticed that. I might even go another 4G modem and just connect that to a WiFI router. Not ideal, but I can live with whatever works. :)

  • Test it with a cheap Kogan sim. I have a non-850mhz modem and still the Vodafone connection flies compared to the Telstra and Optus connections in same area. No idea why but I'm not complaining.

Either because you're in an area that doesn't use 850Mhz, or the tower(s) near you have enough capacity on the other bands.
