Bought it two weeks ago for $218 (officeworks p/m) :(

    • +1

      :(

Update, called jbhifi just to try my luck. Manager agreed to provide me with a giftcard for the difference. Very happy and great customer service there at JBs!

  • +4

Looks like it's been updated to Android Oreo 8.1 too - ticks a lot of boxes for a cheap android phone!

    • +3

It's snappy enough for a budget phone. Much more smooth than my oppo f1s

    • +4

      Oreo 8.1? My G6 only 8.0

      • +1

        I know! Shafted

  • +5

Bought one for my wife a while back and it goes well, aided by the amount of internal memory. Previous Androids always had memory related issues. Battery life seems good too.

    • +1

Yeah I would say 3GB ram is really the minimum for a good experience these days. Great budget phone.

      • I would say that it's 1GB still to have a good experience.

I have no issues with 2GB.

  • worth the upgrade from the S6?

    • +7

Not a phone expert, but I think it would only be slightly better than your S6, if I was you I would wait for another higher end phone to be on sale and go with that.
That being said, if your S6 has completely kicked the bucket and you need a new phone fast this could be the one, people seam pretty happy with them.

I bought this phone about 9 months ago when I smashed my flagship phone, and just couldn't bring myself to spend another $1000+.
It has been a great little phone.
Battery life is very good, camera is decent, dual sim can come in handy, android 8.1 is a plus.
Only negatives are that it can get a little laggy when you have a few intensive apps open, but its manageable.
And the back plastic does scratch very easily.

But given you could literally buy 10 of these phones for the price of a Galaxy s10 plus, I think its a no brainer.

  • +16

No NFC just kills it for me, it is a must in a modern smartphone. I'd probably take Moto G6 over this.

    • +3

Agree. The lack of NFC on Xiaomi phones has stopped me buying them

      • +2

What do you guys use NFC for that makes it such a essential feature?

        • +14

          Mobile payments.

          • +1

@Raynes: So you don't need to carry your wallet?

        • +1

          Paypass, tap and pay?

        • +5

          Google Pay

No need to carry a wallet most of the time

        • Like they said, mobile payments. Some people I know don't even carry wallets around anymore because of NFC. Using google/apple pay.

          • +3

@Ostrk: Some of us still carry out licenses etc

            • +2

@belongsinforums: Ofcs but a lot of people just get a thick wallet case for their phone that carries all of their essential cards. It is possible to completely rule out wallets if you want to.

          • @Ostrk: When they get old enough to drive, they will need to carry a license around

            • @asa79: Phone cases exist to hold licenses and other cards, some people live and work in places where they can get by purely on public transport and rideshare, and digital drivers licences are becoming a thing (since 2017 in SA, full rollout later this year in NSW, etc.)

              • @lbft: You still required to produce identification if requested

                • @asa79: The whole point of a digital license is that it is your identification.

During trials you might still need the physical card.

                  • @lbft: There is no digital licence yet

    • Oh sorry it's a q

    • +1

I always carry cash, never know when the system may go down and I carry my license wherever I go.

  • should i upgrade my S5 to this or is thr s5 better

    • This LG is probably faster unless you run the S5 on a custom ROM. My stock S5 was really laggy.

    • +2

      Save for a $400 phone

  • Got one for my Dad. Was going to get a Nova 3e for $299, but I think this is even better value!

  • Thanks op, got 1 for my mum.

  • Looking on GSM arena, it says the benchmark is slower than my g4. Is this correct?

  • Officeworks price match…

    • +1

      no stock near me,,,

      • I picked one from Blacktown

    • yes - stock is hard to find but worth a try…

  • Is the dual sim slot a hybrid one? Also, is the battery non-removable?

    • +1

      Non removable

    • +1

Dual Sim slot and seperate microSD slot.

  • Does this come with bloatware? Might grab one as a cheapy backup

  • Only negative is the 28nm processor technology. Theoretically not as efficient (power, heat) as a great midrange Snapdragon 6xx 14nm chip.

  • Grabbed one from Midland store. Extra 5% off with egift card.

    • How many left?

    • Can you still buy JB gift card with wish egift card? Or how did you get 5% off JB cards?

  • -4

Great device on paper but SD 435 is not very good. it is 2019, 4GB ram should be minimum, lets hope the device gets third party support down the track.

    • +6

Its better than any other $179 phone.

  • +1

Would this be better than sharp aquos s2

  • +2

Worth mentioning, there is No dual band Wi-Fi.

  • Will it blend?

  • +2

Still can remember the old nokia days which cost an arm and leg thing for making phone calls.. Now this little phone cost hundred bucks and can do so much more things

  • Thanks OP, got one from OW price beat.

  • Is the LG Q6 an upgrade over the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2? Looking for a budget phone with great battery life.

    • -1

Moto Z2 Play is a snappy budget phone with 8-11hr SOT on Wifi.

    • I would say not really… both are Octa core A53 processors on a 28nm process.
Infact your RN2 is higher clocked than this but benchmarks seem to put them about par.
Probably more of a sidegrade if anything.

  • The market is so saturated with phones now. You can get a great phone for under $200, why would you go on a contract?

  • Would this work OK with belong Sim? Belong Calls and 3G data use the 850Mhz and/or 2100Mhz bandwidths.

  • Anybody know how long this deal will last? (can't see any dates mentioned at jb)

  • bought 1

  • I got the last one from Officeworks Glebe it was on hold so they made me wait till close to but it!

  • Thanks OP, the wife and I bought a matching pair of these from this deal. I upgraded from a Huawei POS she replaced a refurb Sony Mini. Plenty of phone for the money!

  • After N years of my G3, the damn screen finally playing up yesterday, it will go off after 10 secs or just dim itself like haunting movie. So I bought this phone hopefully will run exactly the same as my G3. Heaps of stock at the JB Broadway. Thx!

    • I was just looking at this for the same reason! The screen on my G3 goes dark/fades after about 5mins of use. If you take the battery out and let it rest for about 10mins you can briefly use it again. Think it's a cooling issue behind the power button.
