  • coming from someone who hasnt touched lego since a kid

these lego sets command big money,

do they go up, down, stay , in terms of value, once put together?

does any lego sets go up in value? or become a collectors item?

    • Hello,

The answer in short is yes Sets do go up in value - what you need to do is find out the ones that are soon to be discontinued buy one-a few at the best possible price, keep in original unopened box, wait for them to be discontinued and OOS online then list on ebay/Gumtree and you should be able to make a few dollars on the side.

The landscape has changed from LEGO. It's just simply supply and demand, if it's a limited produced set and not many people managed to get their hands on it then it goes up in value. But sets like these, although once was scalped heavily appears to be extremely over produced. No matter how long you keep it for, there's going to be a crap ton of it in the future even when they stop producing it.

    • Once put together, value drops. Alot.

It's not always the biggest fanciest sets that go up in value. They tend to sell in large numbers so there is always heaps available on the second hand market. It's the sets that were cool but not so famous or were exclusive to particular retailers.

Eg: I had an AT-AT that was a toys r us exclusive, it was somewhere around $150 to buy on sale, sold for $350 or so. I held onto it for at least a few years though.

Like anything, you need to know what you're doing or you'll get burnt if you're trying to make $.

Personally I don't bother trying to make money off lego. Win some, lose some.

    • Once Lego switch to their new green platics, you can expect yhe 'old version' sets created with strong ABS plastics will increase in value.

  • Lego has changed quite a bit since the early 90's technic sets i've played with. The creator and ideas sets are really impressive. Perfect size and complexity for a casual adult builder. The cars are esepcially good display pieces. I purchased the Mini Cooper and straight after building that i got the Ferris Wheel and Mack Anthem. The Aston Martin DB5 and Mustang is next on my list. RIP wallet.

    • On the other hand, they're all just "follow the instructions" sorts of sets now. I remember the most fun I had was a giant box of random lego pieces and looking for something and building without a plan. They do have the creator sets, but they're not as many as the pre-designed ones

      • They sell exactly that, the Classic line. Just a big box of colorful bricks you can do what you like with.

        • Ah, thats what I was thinking of - classic not creator. There's not as big a range from what I can see though, and it's a relatively new series?
