  Got one for my border collie after reading good reviews. He didn't take to it, which was unfortunate.

  The gel is cool even without putting it in the freezer, although I imagine that would work pretty well too. It stays cool for about 2.5 hours till needing to be recharged (left alone for an hour or so).
