Classic Auspost, Not Bothering to Check Whether I Am Here or Not

I found that my Galaxy S10+ being delivered today, so I came home early, and waited for the delivery to come.

Around 12:30, I heard a car door opening sound, so I looked out through my door and saw a delivery van. (My rooms just next to the door and was focused, since I was eager to see my new phone)

The guy came out of the van, and I was waiting for him to come in and knock, but after few seconds he just left without coming to the door.

So I ran out, but couldn't catch him, and inside the mailbox, I found out the 'You have a parcel' note.

I have no idea, why this delivery guy wasn't bothered to check whether there was anyone at home or not.

It would've only took him additional 1-2 minutes, but he just left.

Now since the post office has business hours from 9am - 5pm, I probably have to wait till Friday or Saturday to collect, since I have no time tomorrow.

Seriously, AUSPOST have extremely poor service.

P.S I did call the AUSPOST regarding this, but seems there's nothing they can do about and and told me to just pick it up later.

So in this hot weather, I am just whining here… wondering whether AUSPOST would ever have proper service.

  • Auspost contracts it out to a 3rd party as far as I'm aware, but if you complain it should be taken back to the delivery company to fix up, not fluffed off like here. Personally I always use parcel lockers though, going from 50-50 percent chance I'll actually get my package without issue to 89% has been way better.

Delivery driver wise you never know, I had ones that didn't even drop a "we missed you" note and I always had to go in to the post office to find out, but the one I have where i live now calls my on the mobile (I'm assuming sent with the package).

    • going from 50-50 percent chance I'll actually get my package without issue to 89% has been way better.

      Why not 100% chance?

I feel your pain, and I think it's hit and miss with AusPost depending on who does your zone. For a while we had someone who would always card us, someone home or otherwise, but for a while now we've had the loveliest guy who always knocks and waits, and would even deliver work parcels addressed to me at my home address because it was in the same delivery zone.

FWIW, when we had the always-card delivery person, I missed an AusPost package from Apple (when I was home) so I sent a note/complaint to Apple. Couple of days later they sent me a $100 gift card, even though they obviously had zero control over the delivery.

Don't know who you ordered from, but you could send them a note and see what happens.

    • +3

Exactly the same here. The old postie would card me for deliveries that wouldnt fit in the letterbox, or needed a signature, not our new and great postie, he rides up our drive (which is rather long), beeps his horn as he arrives at the house which also has a driveway alarm, we then meet and he rides back. Absolute gem.

They drive me nuts when they don't ring the door bell. If they have to be there to put the card in then why not deliver the beep beep package. The thing I do like about Australia Post is they will send out messages to tell you the status of the package delivery; including a follow up one on how well they did. We were home all day, one time, and we got a message saying the package had been delivered. We snorted with derision until we opened the front door and found the package had been tossed into our alcove by the delivery guy. We hadn't heard a thing, not even him pushing the gate gap open enough so the package could be flung in.

  • I can't recommend highly enough getting a parcel locker. No need to worry about delivery cards and having to try to get to the post office in opening hours, or not being able to send someone else as they aren't the addressee. You can get several and get parcels sent to whichever know you'll be closest to in the next week or two. You can collect any time and send anyone to collect by just giving them the code. So easy. And free. And no risk of losing your parcel - if you get it delivered to your house you're dancing with death every time.

Until…. the locker they put your parcel in is broken, then you've got to wait an undefined length of time for the parcel locker whisperer to show up and free your trapped loot because apparently none of the other staff know how to open them.

Due to reasons above I just get stuff delivered to work now, happened to me twice…

      • +2

I've had over 50 parcels delivered to my parcel locker and never had that problem. If your local parcel locker is broken then that's a good reason for you personally not to use them, but that isn't the case for the majority.

      • +2

I disagree with the concept of using an alternative that's easier and cheaper for Auspost, just because Auspost apparently aren't competent enough to carry out literally their core business of getting things from A to B.

That to me seems like rewarding incompetence.

+1, I love using a parcel locker. Things may (in theory?) come a day or so later, but I couldn't care less - if I got carded before, it would usually be at least the weekend before I could pick it up anyway.

Also not having to listen out for someone coming to the door, dogs going ballistic, etc, is great.

I haven't had any issues in the 6 months or so I have been using one.

    • I thought this until the postie decided to just leave it at the Woolworths next to the locker when there wasn’t a suitable locker for them.. even though the post office is 20 meters away.

I got the e-mail saying delivered but no code, says later a Woolworths employee called me.

I let AusPost know, not OzBargain 😛

And no risk of losing your parcel -

Normally yes, but I have had someone elses tracking info auto added into my aust post app. This allowed me to open the Locker and obtain the parcel without original owners phone number or ID.

Weird thing is, the actual tracking number on the parcel didn't even match the number on my app. When I entered the actual tracking number, it still indicated that the parcel was in process in another state.

I could have easily kept it if I wanted to. So parcel Locker are safer than home delivery imo, but not 100% perfect.

      • +1

        Wow, that's so weird!

I guess like anything it is weighing up the pros and cons - getting delivered to your house has the automatic advantage of not needing to travel anywhere special. But there's the risk of it being stolen or having bad contractors who don't bother delivering (and then having to go to the post office less convenient than parcel locker).

If your local parcel locker machine is broken and/or the employees are doing dodgy stuff (like yours), or if you work at home or night shift so it isn't any more difficult to go to the post office compared to the parcel locker then that pushes things further in favour of home delivery. But if you live in an area that makes home deliveries extra risky - eg in a set of units or with a consistently bad contractor then that makes parcel lockers more attractive.

Like anything I guess it is horses for courses!! Just as long as everyone gets to hear about parcel lockers just in case they happen to be the right choice for them :-p

Just a thought: AusPost encourages you to use Parcel Lockers and less on home delivery service and still charge you heaps? What about additional cost on petrol and time?

        • Depending what you buy, you're not always paying $8+ for postage.

Parcel Locker is on the way home, maybe extra 2 min drive.

I work and I'm not going to take a day off work to wait for a parcel. Parcel lockers is open 24/7, post office isn't.

What about the additional time and petrol to pick up the parcel at the post office?

          • @Ughhh:

What about the additional time and petrol to pick up the parcel at the post office?

It's like a half an hr drive for me……you were saying?

    • +1

I agree with the parcel locker but sometimes we forget we have it and there are limits on what can be delivered to the locker.

  • +3

It would've only took him additional 1-2 minutes, but he just left.

And that is why. It saves them a lot of time.

  • +2

I was hoping to see something new in here. But nope, nothing new! :p

That's typical Auspost service. My packages have been delivered to the post office in a different suburb. When asked why the reply was "It is the contractors". You may want to read my experience below

    https://www.productreview.com.au/reviews/1c2a1aaf-0060-398a-…

    • +1

Haha, even when they try to respond to reviews they can't do it right. In the first reply:

I'd like to follow up on the complaint you lodged and make sure this gets addressed for you

Oh good they're going to address the issue! Except… 4 weeks and no reply later, their response is apparently:

Unfortunately there is no guarantee that you will be contacted back in regards to these complaints

      Hahahaha, god what a mess.

  • +1

Register an account and your address with the auspost website. Most parcels sent out to you that need a signature should pick up the address and then you'll get an SMS asking "A parcel is coming will someone be home?" And you can choose yes or no I'll pick it up from the post office.

I haven't had any issues since I started doing that

  • If you get a Parcel Locker address you need to bear in mind you cannot use it for normal letter type mail. AusPost will return such items to the sender.

    • I've received a few letters to my parcel locker, I think as long as it is a minority of your mail traffic they let it slide (maybe depends on the owners of your post office).

      • Think it is all about money, and to protect the income of the LPO's. If AusPost were to allow regular mail to be accepted at a Parcel Locker then people would not pay some $100pa for a PO Box address.

        • Yeah I don't think it is officially allowed, they probably can choose to let it slide if they wish

      • I’ve had them redirect it to my home address

  • -1

Call them back and tell them you want it redelivered at their expense.

  • -4

    so I came home early,

You're normally not home at this time of the day. The contractor knows this and are focusing on those addressees that they know is home.

    • How would they know…?

    • In that case the contractor made an assumption and was wrong.

  • It's not just Australia Post that does this, most companies do it nowadays unfortunately.

  • Make sure you leave comments and answer the "how did we do survey" that is emailed to you.

This is a kpi for the contractors manager and usually have a word to slack drivers.

  • True. It's all a conspiracy to get you to use their parcel locker service (which is great btw).

  • this is common place, bottom line,
you pay peanuts you get monkeys, that sums up most couriers

  • While having a chat with my regular bike postie one day when he was doing a second run past my house to deliver a rather large parcel, he told me they get paid by the hour and the parcel delivery guys get paid by the delivery (hence why Auspost is making use of posties for parcels, not that many letters these days).

So if I had to guess, your delivery guy is getting paid the same whether he delivers to you or the post office and is either just lazy or maybe has a lot more deliveries that day, few minutes saved here and there means he can go home an hour earlier.

On a positive note, gotta say my postie and delivery guy are both pretty good, just luck of the draw.

  • +1

my postie is a driveway nazi - if he has to get off his bike he won't deliver - not 2 steps -bin days I just lose post.

    • Is his name Mike?

  • +1

The guy came out of the van, and I was waiting for him to come in and knock, but after few seconds he just left without coming to the door.

Why didn't you just open the front door and just stand there staring at him waiting……maybe even record footage of of him just carding the mail box instead of walking to you with the parcel….

  • +1

I don't even bother with hoping they'll deliver the parcel to my house.. I just get it sent to parcel locker. Hopefully that means less money for the shitty 3rd party couriers who CBf knocking on doors.

  • You can lodge a complaint here: https://helpandsupport.auspost.com.au/s/delivery-issue

Maybe if enough people complain each time delivery is not attempted or the 'safe place' is visible from a busy road etc, Auspost may improve….

    • you'll be lucky to get a response

      • +1

They just give you a generic response and mark it “resolved”. Probably goes down as a “positive resolved issues” statistic on internal reporting and earns someone a good bonus.

  • that's why I prefer parcel lockers. Can pick it up anytime.
