1111

UPDATE 2 MegaBuy are all out, congrats to everyone who scored this awesome deal. The server is great (mine arrived today). Commiserations to those who paid by BPay or bank transfer and may miss out.
UPDATE dessytek are all out, if you paid by BPay or other non-instant payment type you better cancel your order and buy from MegaBuy for a few dollars more…
http://www.megabuy.com.au/hp-microserver-amd-n36l-1gb250gb35…
Even megabuy are saying that you must use CC or other instant payment, otehrwise you will miss out as these things are flying out the door.
dessytek had 59 on Friday and nearly 300 on Saturday, so its a case of snooze you loose.

I ordered from desssytek 2pm Friday using PayPal, and my server arrived 11am Monday - NSW to VIC via StarTrack Express.

I just bought one of these today and it has already shipped ($16 shipping to VIC). Luckily I fond this site still says it has 50+ in stock becasues the boys over at OCAU have been snapping them up left right and centre last few days.

The prices are fluctuating all over the place right now so please check the usual places before committing.

These were circa $500 since they were released, but just recently the price has been slashed.

It is an ideal setup for a NAS if you put something like openfiler on it, or WHS if you want to pay for an OS. Basically this is killer bang for buck if you were going to go down the DIY NAS route. The AMD laptop CPU in this is faster than the even the newer dual core atoms. It is targeted at small business with a 1 year onsite warranty and the spec is really great for the price…

It comes with a 4 bay mini-SAS backplane (1 bay populated by the 250GB bundled disk, woo hoo) but there is an additional external 5.25" SATA bay and an internal USB port so you have other options to run an OS off of and keep the 4 bay backplane for storage etc.

"Ok hp are now imposing a 2 per customer limit.
      Ordered my second unit then.

Prashant did say they are built to order, so stock seems plentiful.
Apparently this promotion has been going for a while."

    • Thanks! Finally got out from Dessytek Bpay victim!
Just ordered one with free shipping!

    • I was contemplating unsubscribing from this thread a day or two ago to avoid heartache from reading about everyone playing with theirs. I'm glad I didn't… thanks ryang!

  • How you guys ordered? by phone or email? I emailed Prashant, but he did not reply me :( any advised?

    • +1

Call him in the morning, maybe advise you already emailed him (and to disregard that request), asking to fulfil your order request over the phone.

If he's not contactable on his extension, anyone else on the same phone number should be able to take your order.

thanks a lot stebie for the info :) appreciated it, and yes,I agree that ebay seller should eat his own D*CK! :)

how do you know the ebay seller has a duck?

  • DAMN IT, SO BAD LUCK! call this morning, and this PRASHANT told me the offer is end! the price is going up to $599

  • So i ordered 4x2tb WDEARS drives for my server.

What do people think about having two raid 1 volumes of 2x2tb and 2x2tb, and doing a sync backup once a day? Would i get increased read/write performance from the primary array?

    • A 4 disk RAID5 would be a better option. You'll have to do it in software, but assuming the server isn't going much else it won't be a problem.

You'll end up with 6TB of usable storage, and it should realistically be faster than a 2 disk RAID1.

      • I guess that's the question… software raid 5 vs hardware raid 1…

Do you have any idea of the overhead involved with software raid 5?

The most intensive activity the server would be doing is transcoding 720p mkv files and streaming them to my PS3 - which it seems to be capable of.

Had a bit of play with my server today. Installed my upgraded ram (8gb) and 4x2TB WDEARS Green drives.

Installed Windows Home Server 2011, PS3 Media Server and sabnzb.

    No RAID configuration yet.

File copy performance over my gigabit network seems to be in the right ballpark from Win7 client to the server, ranging from 70Mb/s to 110Mb/s. For single drive access, I'm quite happy.

Next test was media streaming. First tested streaming 720p m2ts files to my PS3, and it worked fine. Seeking works well. Moved on to 720p MKV transcoding and streaming and the machine kept up. Seeking still worked, albeit slightly slower. Stepped up to 1080p m2ts streaming and still no troubles. Seeking still working.

Finally, the big test, 1080p transcoding and streaming. With an abated breath, I've never been happier to see the Fox opening sequence appear! Yes it works. And fast forward seeking even works - albeit VERY slowly.

Lastly I installed sabnzb and as expected it works fine. I even opened up the port on my router and was able to access the web interface via my Galaxy Tab (picked up for $299 from the Telstra deal). Also downloaded a free app called Groupie which can interface with sabnzb over the net, and even integrates with nzbmatrix (if you have a VIP subscription which is only about $10). Together with my free dyndns.org domain name, I can now set my server to download shows/movies whilst I'm at work and have them all ready when I get home.

It really does seem to be the little the server that can do it all!

Next step will be to try a RAID1 array and see if that yields any extra performance. I was also going to try dual-booting with a PS3 Media Server specific Linux image but now that I've found the performance under WHS11 to be acceptable, I'm not going to bother.

    • Nice review

    • It is a nice little machine.
Mine now has hardware RAID5 card w/ 4x1TB Samsung F3 (Staples deal) and ESXi 4.1 on it.
Good for toying w/ various VM setups. Tried W2k3, W2k8, Linux, Win7. All work ok. Best performance for straight NAS/home server probably w/ pure WHS2011.

      • what RAID card have you got in yours?

Just as a final update on this whole situation

    From this link…
    http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1697165

It appears that MegaBuy were pissed that these were being sold so cheap by HP and the normal (HP cost + a few percent) re-sellers. They knew this was the bargain of the year, and wanted a bigger piece of the action…

So once their initial allocation of stock flew out the door for $170, they put the price up to $380, hoping that other re-sellers would follow suit. When they didn't, and people started buying from the others instead [duh] they put their price back down.
Then MegaBuy bought up all of the remaining stock from the HP supplier.

Their cunning plan was thwarted though because in the meantime they sold all that extra stock at the lower price. They were trying to have their cake and eat it too.

Unfortunately this is why the other smaller re-sellers were unable to have stock allocated to their orders - because Mega Buy bought it all.

Then Mega Buy went all broden on it and started listing the few left-overs on eBay at a hefty 300% markup…
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-HP-ProLiant-N36L-Microserver-…

Its one thing for random tools on the internet to do stuff like this, but for an official re-seller to do it is a bit off.

    • wow what an ass

I'm a little disappointed in this sort of attitude
My understanding of the situation from your comments and from the threads..
      1) HP dropped the price these units to well below market value
      2) Megabuy starts selling units with their normal margin.. they begin to fly out the door..
      3) Megabuy realised WTF! too cheap.. lets jack up the price and make some enormous margin on these in rip some people off
      4) Megabuy starts buying up stock and jacks up price… $380…. (thats a lot of profit) 4/5/2011
      5) HP price changes feeds into other on-line retailers who start offering these at around the same price as Megabuy originally did..
      6) Megabuy WTF! we've now got hundreds of these units.. and the dropshifters are now selling them much cheaper than we are.. and are moving lots of stock.. (and taking no risk)
      7) Megabuy drops their prices back to the original cheap price to ensure they are not stuck with stock.. God know how many thousands and thousands of these, HP has in their inventory..
      8) HP runs out of stock ,Drop shifters run out of stock.
      9) Megabuy is overordered before they have time to jack up the price to $380 once again…
Thankfully the drop shifters have kept you honest.. else we would be paying $380 each for these…

      +1 to this guy: Kelvin

    • Yeh last time I buy frm them…

  • In other news… I put in my picoPSU today. Its now running at 18W idle, that's pretty damn good. More details here…

I had an email yesterday from Megabuy to say my 2 units had just been shipped. I recieved them both about 2 weeks ago. Fingers crossed for another 2 :)

    • Hahah, same here! Looks like it was just a copy of the tax invoice though. :(

      • Yeh I got one too two weeks after the event. But invoice is handy because it wasn't available from the website.

    • I never received a your-product-has-shipped email from HP (the last email I received was a "..currently being processed" one, but mine turned up today followed by a cryptic spam-looking email from "APFUSNBATCH <[email protected]>" with the subject line "0309133351/906133351391/90FI880950" along with a PDF attachment named "Attachment.PDF".

The body of the email contained:

      Attached: Invoice
      Attached: Invoice

That would normally ring alarm bells, but it had been scanned and I was expecting something from HP so I opened it and sure enough, it was the tax invoice.

HP really needs some better communications skills!

  • If anyone is interested in the 1gig stock ECC ram stick i am selling it for $20 delivered, email me at [email protected]

  • Hi All, is there anyplace i can get one of these deal as I missed it and really need one., cheers
